Tropeços de duas películas importantes: "The Glass Castle" e "Detroit". O primeiro parece que é um caso clássico de má adaptação (Leiam o livro, é excelente.) O segundo, ao contrário, é o caso do filme que é bom demais para o que estamos dispostos a aguentar. Muito violento, sombrio, polêmico. Nenhum americano precisa de tanta verdade jogada na cara. Permaneci com "Detroit" nas categorias de som, e coloquei o aclamado Will Poulter na última vaga de Coadjuvante. "The Papers" voltou ao nome original nesta semana: "The Post".Dois nomes igualmente insossos. Outra mudança é surpreendente: "Darkest Hour" parece que vai concorrer em Roteiro Adaptado. Atriz: A Sony está fechando as tratativas para fazer a campanha da Annnette Bening. Ficou todo mundo babando de ansiedade, querendo saber mais, mas, na real, não temos nem trailer do filme, nem nada. O que sabe-se à boca pequena é Kate Winslet em modo "Blue Jasmine". Deixei Allen em alternativa pra Roteiro. Meus Coadjuvantes mudaram bastante: agora tenho dois veteranos, Dafoe e Pffeiffer, vencendo. Apesar das críticas extraordinárias da Melissa Leo não a veja ganhando pela segunda vez tão cedo. A Pffeiffer faz um personagem à la Ruth Gordon em "Rosemary`s Baby". Comparando as listas, a principal mudança está expressa em quase todas as categorias: a ascensão de "The Shape of Water". Guillermo del Toro apresentou até as indicações ao Oscar este ano, embora em matéria de indicação, só tenha umazinha por Roteiro. De qualquer forma, o trailer impressionou. E os adversários caíram. No mais:  desde sempre, "Dunkirk" sempre me pareceu o filme mais forte. Depois que vi o filme em IMAX, eu não consigo pensar em nenhum desses outros filmes aí que me tragam uma experiência tão avassaladora de cinema. Eu coloquei até o Mark Rylance na minha lista, pois ele está ABSURDAMENTE competente em seu trecho, e acredito que o filme precisará de uma indicação entre os Atores. Vejo o filme ganhando em Fotografia, amargando mais uma derrota ao sempre indicado Roger Deakins. Como a vida é cruel! Para mim, "Dunkirk" pode gabaritar de cima à baixo. Mas, por favor, que leve Trilha Sonora. Zimmer arrasou, lacrou, pisou, humilhou e sapateou, como aquele tic-tac constante. Vale dizer ainda que ele chamou para si a assinatura da trilha de "Blade Runner 2049", colocando o Johannson em um degrau menor no trabalho, o que me fez deixar essa segunda concorrência como alternativa. Ele não vai querer competir com dois peões. Em Filme Estrangeiro, mantenho a fé no nosso cinema nacional. Temos coisa boa pra mostrar!

Engraçado isso.

Vi dunkirk em Imax, até postei no tópico do filme: ao mesmo tempo que achei uma baita experiência cinematográfica, achei o filme um pouquinho oco.

Pra mim sobrou ensaio, coreografia, tomadas lindas e faltou um pouco de "verdade". 

Em aspectos técnicos fiquei abismado, mas faltou um gole pra me emocionar de verdade.

Downsizing

Alex Billington: Payne’s Downsizing is like Charlie Kaufman, Spike Jonze, Mike Judge all rolled into one. Totally crazy, amusing concept that mostly works.

Robbie Collin: Downsizing, AKA Alexander Payne’s Avatar, AKA Honey, I Shrunk the Privilege. Swerves left every minute, destination v worth it.

Beatrice Behn: A wobbly social satire that has some great moments but in the end sticks to its name.

Angus MacKinnon: Much to enjoy & think about in DOWNSIZING but rambling plot and pace don’t do it any favours, nor hammy turn by Christoph Waltz

Jason Solomons: Can’t see Downsizing winning any little men statues – maybe nod for Matt Damon or supporting Hong Chau – film is droll yet weak

Peter Travers: Alex Payne’s Downsizing opened Venice. It’s a visionary masterwork. And newcomer Hong Chau is omg-great. The bad taste of summer is gone.

Ben Croll: DOWNSIZING is Payne’s IDIOCRACY, using a sci-fi premise to land satirical hits on US culture. Many hits land, but damn is the film uneven.

Xan Brooks: Alexander Payne’s Downsizing a lovely, skittish, spirited giant of a film. Beautifully played by Matt Damon & Christoph Waltz

Magdalena Miedl: Payne’s DOWNSIZING is like the proverbial box of chocolates, bit heavy on the morals but hugely entertaining. Good opening film.

Giuseppe Rossetti: DOWNSIZING A very original dramedy. Maybe a bit confused but still delightful. Chau and Waltz steal the scene (3.5/5).

Adam Ray Palmer: Downsizing is a weird one. Enjoyable, comedic & is a real thinker. Waltz a delight again, Damon a bit wet but worth a watch

The Shape Of Water

Xan Brooks: Del Toro’s The Shape of Water is a ravishing, nourishing monster movie romance. Red meat for the senses with some sugar on top

Paul O’Callaghan: For first 1/2 hour or so, I thought The Shape of Water might be an all-timer. It’s not, but by far GDT’s best since Pan’s Labyrinth. The central romance didn’t quite work for me, I was more invested in everything going on around it. But it’s still pretty great!

One Room With A View: THE SHAPE OF WATER is a wonderland of cinematic delights and horrors. It’s pure Guillermo del Toro and a sincere joy

Chris Vognar: Loved The Shape of Water, GDT’s Cold War fable. Visually sumptuous monster movie/love story. Commanding and moving.

Robbie Collin: The Shape of Water is basically Creature from the Black Lagoon directed by Douglas Sirk. ADORED.

Guy Lodge: I lost my heart to THE SHAPE OF WATER, and I don’t even want it back.

Beatrice Behn: The Shape of Water is an incredibly intelligent & sensitive pondering of toxic masculinity & its consequences. Chapeau.

Dave Calhoun: Guillermo Del Toro’s THE SHAPE OF WATER is gloriously eccentric and imaginative. All the swoons for Sally Hawkins.

Alex Billington: Omg omg omg The Shape of Water is spectacular. What an extraordinarily special film. One of Del Toro’s best films, hands down. Oh my. Oh I am SOOOO in love with Sally Hawkins. She better damn well get at least a nomination for The Shape of Water. Guillermo’s most beautiful love story yet, infused with so much passion for cinema, for romance, for the power of love.

Giuseppe Rossetti: THE SHAPE OF WATER Such a brilliant, spectacular and intense love story. Del Toro at his best, Hawkis is masterful. I weep a lot.

Andreas Wiseman: The Shape Of Water will be in the awards conversation. Hawkins, del Toro, production design, score, script, possibly Shannon and Jenkins.

Gregory Ellwood: I’d be stunned if Bening is snubbed but this is not her Still Alice

Peter Bradshaw: A beguiling story and Bell and Bening are tremendous as the star-crossed lovers.

Al Toklas: Also loved Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. Annette Bening deserves an Oscar and Jamie Bell is a revelation (once again).

Anne Thompson: Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father is powerful big scale Cambodian war drama from the POV of a girl. Not a dry eye in the house.

Kristopher Tapley: “First They Killed My Father” is a bit too long but it is by far Jolie’s best film, and quite stunning at stretches. Mantle’s photography is the best I’ve seen all year. Beautifully subjective throughout. Maybe his best work, too.

Mark Johnson: First They Killed My Father is Jolie’s best work. Brutal, grueling, and deeply personal. The film she was destined to make

Scott Feinberg: FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER is Angelina Jolie’s best directorial effort yet. Might well be a contender beyond the foreign language category.

Tomris Laffly: Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father: mostly dialogue free, harrowing, at times very moving. Can be tighter, but powerful

Stephen Galloway: Angelina Jolie delivers knock out punch with her Cambodian drama. Front runner for foreign language Oscar. Likely director nom too.

J Don Birnam: Devastating, unforgiving film First They Killed My Father is undoubtedly Angelina Jolie’s best film.

Atima Omara: Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” based on the life of Loung Ung during Khmer Rouge regime is an amazing must see film

Scott Mantz: FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER: A bit long, but powerful loss-of-innocence, coming-of-age drama superbly directed by Angelina Jolie!

Scott Foundas: Big (and well earned) Telluride standing ovation for Angelina Jolie and Loung Ung at 1st screening of FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER.

Darkest Hour

David Ehrlich: DARKEST HOUR: a clockwork precise & fucking *electric* chamber drama about the power of words. perfect complement to DUNKIRK.

Mark Johnson: Darkest Hour is a pretty spectacular snapshot of a few critical weeks in history. Oldman is astonishing. Oscar beckons.

Kristopher Tapley: Darkest Hour might be Gary Oldman’s finest…hour. But Ben Mendelsohn deserves a look. Low-key brilliant.

Gregory Ellwood: Gary Oldman is a force of nature in The Darkest Hour. This years Viola Davis.

Sasha Stone: Darkest Hour is astonishing. Gary Oldman disappears into Churchill. Blown away. So clearly we have our Best Actor front runner in Oldman. On the level of Hoffman’s Capote.

Scott Mantz: DARKEST HOUR: Gary Oldman is MAGNIFICENT! The performance of a lifetime as WINSTON CHURCHILL! He’s gotta WIN Best Actor Oscar!

Mara Reinstein: No hyperbole: GARY OLDMAN really is that extraordinary as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Total role disappearance.

Samuel R Murrian: One more thing about Darkest Hour (for now). I greatly appreciated the female characters. Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas are luminous.

Ashley Menzel: Gary Oldman stuns in Darkest Hour. A truly remarkable performance.

Bob Harris: Great script that is very well directed as well by Joe Wright. Lots of style but Oldman brings the whole thing to another level.

Scott Menzel: Darkest Hour is a behind the scenes look at Winston Churchill. It will be a front runner for best picture & best actor this award season.

Alicia Malone: LADY BIRD: smartly written, fresh, funny & sweet coming of age mother/daughter tale. Solid debut for writer/director Greta Gerwig

Richard Lawson: Greta Gerwig’s LADY BIRD: a sweet, slight bit of personal history. Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are aces, as is Beanie Feldstein!

Tomris Laffly: Lady Bird: A delicate, detailed, loving portrait of female adolescence. Gerwig gives her characters room to breathe & grow. Beautiful debut. An acting showcase by what must be one of the greatest, most exquisite ensembles of the year. Saoirse Ronan simply is a treasure.

Al Toklas: Lady Bird is a beautiful film. Saoirse Ronan gives her best performance yet and the whole ensemble is perfect. Loved it.

Baz Bamigboye: Saoirse Ronan is breathtaking in Greta Gerwig ‘s stunning family drama.

J Don Birnam: Battle of the Sexes will win at TIFF and if submitted for Comedy at Globes, there too. Must see. Emma fantastic

Tomris Laffly: Moved/inspired beyond words by Battle of the Sexes. Instant winner! Equal rights/equal pay for women! Love is love! Woo hoo!

Scott Feinberg: BATTLES OF THE SEXES is a battle of fine performances by Emma Stone and Steve Carell, in a film that’s timely, entertaining and moving.

Gregory Ellwood: Battle of the Sexes first two acts are really disappointing last act and ending are great.

Mara Reinstein: BATTLE OF THE SEXES: wonderful, compelling. I have heart of stone and I was v emotional at the end. Yeah girls. Yeah Billy Jean!

Victoria & Abdul

Mina Nagy Takla: Judi Dench shines in a crowd-pleasing but slight take on a lonely woman in power.

Beatrice Behn: Thank goodness, Victoria & Abdul is not the cololonial mess the trailer made it look like. It’s quite ambivalent & thoughtful.

The Syndicate: Victoria and Abdul is the Judi Dench show. A sweet but slight crowdpleaser with another terrific performance by Judi Dench.

Rich Cline: Frears never settles on whether Victoria & Abdul is quirky comedy or historical drama. So it’s neither, but Dench wins us over

Alex Billington: Victoria & Abdul – A bit campy but very charming once it gets into it. A nice lesson in being open to different culture, to open our hearts. Judi Dench is splendid as the Queen, as always. Her costar Ali Fazal is delightful as Abdul. And the score by Thomas Newman is quite lovely.

One Room With A View: VICTORIA AND ABDUL is a rather generic awards-season biopic, lifted above mediocrity by the timeliness of its message

Lieven Trio: For a movie about opening up to other cultures, VICTORIA AND ABDUL is rather uninterested in its Muslim characters. Great Dench, meh movie.

Ali Ercivan: How to react to Victoria & Abdul’s aim towards a contemporary context with its sugary “don’t be afraid of muslims” approach? :/ Certainly doesn’t save it from being a dull awards season movie. An award for the most shallow and underwritten character could go to Abdul.

Ward Verrijcken: Oscar is calling: Judi Dench does more with one glance than most actors in their entire career.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,

Missouri First Reactions

Jessica Kiang: THREE BILLBOARDS is uneven in the sense it ranges from vicious to delicious. Frances McDormand is God and Sam Rockwell is Jesus. Loved it.

Robbie Collin: Just saw Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and I think it burnt my eyebrows off.

Tomris Laffly: Three Billboards surprises & darkens at every turn, and often pulls the rug from under you. Love the way Frances McDormand says “culpable”. Yes, McDormand & Rockwell are both exceptional. But it was Woody Harrelson that shattered me. Go figure.

Xan Brooks: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a terrific, profane firework display of a film. Loved it

Alex Billington: Three Billboards Outside… – That there is some damn fine filmmaking. More drama than comedy, but still a potent slice of tasty cinema pie.

Guy Lodge: McDonagh and McDormand: the names practically overlap, and the excellent THREE BILLBOARDS practically feels like their marriage.

Emma Jones: Now allowed to say that Three Billboards is a work of Frances McDormand genius

Jonathan Romney: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. McDonagh, McDormand, Rockwell, Harrelson are on fire. Superb.

Jason Solomons: Brilliant Three Billboards: scabrously witty, moving, incendiary – script Oscar cert, nods for Frances McDormand & Sam Rockwell

Joe Utichi: Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards is another smart treat from him, and Frances McDormand delivers a masterclass.

Antonio Maria Abate: Such a fun ride 3 BILLBOARDS. Terrific writing, superb cast. Hard to forget these McDormand & Rockwell. Possibly two or three cult scenes.

Guy Lodge: mother! (A-) The exclamation mark fits, but nothing about this is lowercase. Forget the expert spookhouse nerve: hell is truly other people.

Robbie Collin: Goya’s Disasters of War via What To Expect When You’re Expecting. My insides have turned to porridge.

John Bleasdale: Aronofsky’s Mother! is a wtf epic history of the universe as a haunted house story. Divisive but I’m team Aronofsky

Joe Utichi: Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is a twisted, often inspired, often insane fever dream of a film.

Alex Billington: Mother! – Intense. Breathtaking. Darren indicts all of humanity in one of the most heart-pounding, incredible cinematic experiences. Whoa.

Laurence Barber: MOTHER! intrigues for a while, then it’s exeunt for Pfeiffer & Aronofsky spends an hour-plus kicking you in the face w/ obvious ~symbolism~.

Anthony Bourdain: Just saw Aronofsky’s MOTHER . It is dark, dark, dark, brilliant and will upset the fuck out of people . A good poke in eye to convention

Simon Popek: Aronofsky’s MOTHER: great until 3/4, then bombs spectacularly.

Kita van Slooten: Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! is a horrific film with nothing but horrific characters. Exclamation point

Steven Zeitchik: All I can say about Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” is !!!!!
(And that’s still probably not enough exclamation points.)

Writer-director Charles Burnett, cinematographer Owen Roizman, actor Donald Sutherland, and director Agnes Varda will receive honorary Oscars this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday. The prizes will be presented at the annual Governors Awards ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11.
