NO VALE DAS SOMBRAS (IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH/Paul Haggis/2007) Após receber dois controversos Oscars por Crash – No Limite, Paul Haggis poderia ter deitado em berço esplêndido, reeditando a fórmula daquele filme. Qual não é a surpresa ao travar contato com sua empreitada seguinte, pensativa e low-key (em contraste a Crash, expansivo e melodramático), um amálgama drama-mistério envolvendo as feridas abertas em solo americano pelo último conflito no Iraque. Filmado classicamente sem a necessidade de vanguardismos estilísticos, dá continuidade a uma linhagem inaugurada por Os Melhores Anos de Nossas Vidas na década de 40, reforçada por O Franco Atirador 30 anos depois: o gênero “guerra” explorado por via oblíqua, posicionando na dianteira os efeitos devastadores da carnificina bélica na alma dos soldados, mesmo findo o serviço militar, também ricocheteados nos familiares. No Vale das Sombras acompanha um pai – que já perdera outros filhos fardados em prol da defesa da pátria – esforçando-se para desvendar os motivos por trás da violenta morte de seu último herdeiro, ocorrida logo após o retorno do Oriente Médio, em circunstâncias desconcertantes. Na sua enlutada jornada rumo à elucidação, perceberá que o horror é capaz de macular desde o caráter do mais exemplar dos indivíduos até as fundações de uma nação autoproclamada guardiã mundial do triunvirato paz/justiça/democracia.

Synopsis: This emotional and brutally honest true story follows Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg (Waterston), who remains in Cambodia in 1975 after the government falls. He convinces his friend and translator Dith Pran (Ngor) to stay with him to report on the bloodbath perpetrated by one of the most brutal regimes of the 20th century and on the United States' role in precipitating the horror. The two continue to work until the Khmer Rouge, the terrorist government that killed nearly 3 million, arrests them. Schanberg is eventually released and returns to New York. Pran is sent for execution but barely manages a daring escape from the killing fields and from Cambodia. With the help of Schanberg, Pran emigrates to the U.S. and becomes a staff photographer for the New York Times.
