Christina Whitaker steals the movie with her wild portrayal of Rita.

After you've seen a few dozen women in prison (WIP) movies, it becomes hard to remember which is which. Oh sure, Chained Heat (1983) is the Linda Blair classic, and I'll remember Women in Cages (1971) for Pam Grier's turn as a wicked warden, and Ilsa will always be Ilsa... But, once you get past a few memorable ones with recognizable actors or weird settings, you get to a vast, sprawling morass of virtually indistinguishable movies. Oh sure, some are better than others in various ways, but they can all be described as "that movie about the innocent chick who gets sent to prison and has to deal with the tough inmate/guard/warden until she's released/rescued/escaped." The Naked Cage falls into that category at one level. But that said, there are three things that make The Naked Cage memorable. First, The Naked Cage is a veritable time capsule of bad 1980s fashion. Bad hair, bad clothes, bad jewelry. Oddly enough, at the time, I sort of remember thinking that the 80s weren't as bad as the 70s fashion-wise, and yet now, whenever I see those ridiculous narrow ties or rolled up jacket sleeves, or off-the-shoulder tops, or hoop earring and short spiky hair, I sort of wonder if bellbottoms and pantsuits were really that bad. Remember the movie Valley Girl (1983) starring a young Nic Cage? Well, now imagine you took the fashion sensibilities of that movie and applied them to a WIP movie, and you'll sort of have an idea of what The Naked Cage is like. Second, The Naked Cage has enough plot for three WIP movies. I'll explain about that later, but keeping track of all the characters and conflicts is more than a little challenging. Third, The Naked Cage is memorable for Christina Whitaker's performance. In this one she joins the pantheon of WIP superstars, although unfortunately she never built on that to become a full-blown b-movie queen. Our loss really.

NCBoots.jpg

These boots ain't made for walking.

Anyhoo. You have to give The Naked Cage an A for effort... or is that an E for effort? Most of these babies just start off with some terse, contrived development that gets our heroine in trouble. Here they actually work on the setup. We barely even meet our main character, Michelle (Shari Shattuck), in the first ten minutes. Instead, the movie opens up with Rita (Christina Whitaker) vamping it up by the side of the road. She's wearing a t-shirt that says "Tina," which I guess is sort of misdirection on her part to hide her identity (which we soon learn is that of an escaped convict). Still it is an odd fashion choice. But, heck, Rita is a master of bad fashion. In addition to her red t-shirt, she's wearing a short shorts, a jeans jacket with the sleeves cut off, and red cowboy boots, for an ensemble that might be described as Western Trampy. Her outfit is calculated to appeal to rednecks, and luckily enough, one soon pulls up in a red Corvette. Said redneck is Willy (John Terlesky), whose low IQ is hinted at by his goofy grin. Rita climbs in and the two tear off down the road.

NCDiner.jpg

Willy puts the moves on "Tina." Can you say, "Out of your league, Willy?"

After brief interlude where we see Michelle arriving for Sunday dinner at her parent (thus setting her up as the "nice girl"), we return to our friends Willy and Rita having a bite to eat at a roadside diner. Willy is trying to make time with such tried and true lines as "So, when are you goin' to unveil those pretty blue eyes I'm sure you've got hiding behind those shades." She's more interested in his car: "That 'vette's gotta be about 30 Gs, you got a rich daddy or somethin'?" "Nope, I kinda 'borrowed' it," he replies, grinning stupidly. Throughout this scene, Willy looks like a young version of Patrick Swayze, only goofier (!) if that's possible. She then takes a swig of his flask to his increasing annoyance. "Hey, leave some for me," he whines. She replies, "I told you I haven't had anything to eat for 24 hours. All my money and s__ got stolen on that f__ing bus." Yup classy lady, well having had nothing to eat certainly explains gulping down half a flask of cheap booze. She continues, "Thanks for the meal Willy, I can't say it hit the spot, but it sure was good timing." I'm not sure what that means. Neither does Willy apparently, because he follows it with a non sequitur, "Um, if you need a place to crash tonight, mi casa est su casa." Followed by a goofy laugh. Smooth. As silk.

NCRitaGun.jpg

Rita draws a bead on the diner owner.

Well, before these two can demonstrate any more of their nauseating courting ritual, Willy notices a cop pull up outside and check out the Corvette. Stand-up guy that he is, Willy excuses himself and goes to the john, leaving Rita at the table holding the bag. The cop walks in and asks her for ID. She responds by elbowing him in the groin, making him collapse helpless on the floor. She's apparently a very strong gal because she was seated at the time and didn't really have enough room to wind up when she hit him. Still, she apparently hits him hard enough that not only does he collapse, but he's also unable to prevent her from pulling his gun out of his holster and bashing him over the head with it. The diner's owner then reaches under the counter and pulls his own gun, but before he can pull the trigger Rita puts a couple of rounds into his belly. At this point, Willy reappears through the front door. Apparently he climbed out the window of the bathroom, but then decided to return when he heard gunfire instead of running away. Makes sense to me.

NCTruckFlee.jpg

Rita and Willy tear out after this little shooting rampage.

"You killed a cop!" he whines. "I just put him to sleep," she replies, not mentioning that she did kill the owner, but I guess strictly speaking she's telling the truth about the cop. Willy is freaking out at this point, but Rita is cool as a cucumber (I've never understood that expression... do cucumbers get cooler than other vegetables? Cool as a carrot?). She orders him to empty the cash register, and then to grab the owner's gun. The felons now flee the scene. Willy wants to jump back into the 'vette, but Rita tells him that it is too hot, so they take the owner's truck instead. Now, let's think about this one for a moment. Why would the Corvette be hotter than the truck? When police arrive on the scene, they'll see the dead owner and immediately put out an APB (is that term still used, or have I been watching too much Dragnet again?) on his truck. So there is no benefit one way or the other.

NCMichellePicture.jpg

Rita scoffs at Michelle's nice girl looks, and then shows Willy her version of a good time.

NCRitaHat.jpg

Well, as it turns out, it was apparently the right choice because we cut to Rita and Willy in his apartment. He's pacing around nervously, snorting coke like it's going out of style... which, in 1986, it sorta was. Yup, that'll calm the ol' nerves right down. She pops out of the shower wearing a towel and a smile. She notices a picture of Michelle on the wall. "Your ex?" she postulates. "Yup," he replies. "I can see why you left her," Rita replies. Meow.

Rita then drapes herself seductively on his bed and tries on a policeman's cap that Willy apparently had lying around. He's amazed at how cool she was in the diner. As if listening in on their conversation, a radio announcer suddenly breaks into the music and reports the crime and names the prime suspects as Rita Morani, recently escaped from the state pen, and a "young man who stole a red Corvette." Willy, demonstrating his amazing acumen, says, "hey, you're that Rita, aren't you?" Damn Columbo, how'd you figure that one out? For some reason, this revelation adds to Willy's agitation, although once she shot the owner and ordered him to loot the till, it is hard to figure what illusions he might have been under. What'd he think? That she was social worker having a bad hair day? Anyway, Rita knows just how to sooth the savage (okay, stupid) beast. She unwraps the towel and exposes her chest, complete with tattoo over her left breast. Then she spoons a generous amount of coke on each nipple -- which seems to me like it might burn or something, but apparently not -- and invites him to climb aboard. Which he does, burrowing into her chest like a pig digging for truffles.

NCRitaWatch.jpg

Rita hides in the bushes as Willy and Michelle chat.

Then suddenly the movie cuts to Rita standing in some shrubbery and watching through a window as Willy visits with Michelle. Michelle is angry because she can tell he's still on drugs. He vaguely asks her for help. Suddenly she's channeling Nancy Reagan: "I'll take you to a clinic. All you should be concerned about right now is getting straight." That isn't what he wants apparently. Then she tells him that she really likes her job and the people she works with, and asks him not to mess things up. He mumbles something. And then boom, we cut back to Rita and Willy back in his apartment. The lack of establishing shots between these scenes is disconcerting, and if my description of the Willy-Michelle discussions seem fuzzy that's 'cause, well, the movie is fuzzy. I have no idea how they went from talking about his drug problem to her suddenly pleading with him about her job. It seems like something was cut out somehow, or maybe lost in the printing process? This suspicion is heightened when we cut back to Willy's place because Rita is loading a revolver and telling Willy not to chicken out after not having the guts to get the information from Michelle. What info?

NCPOVGun.jpg

"Everybody be cool, this is a robbery...." Naw, that's a line from a much better movie.

Anyway, this all starts to make more sense the next day when Rita and Willy burst into the bank where Michelle works and try to hold it up. Seems to me that robbing a bank where the employees were less likely to recognize you would be wiser, but whatever. The scene begins with a weird POV shot looking down Willy's gun arm, until suddenly the camera peels away from Willy and we see him approach the tellers. Disconcerting since we go from POV to standard shot without a cut. Rita and Willy evince no inside knowledge. Ultimately, though just the bank's location and hours would be enough to materially aid lame brains like these two. Indeed, Willy is so clueless that he doesn't even realize that there is a bank guard, and that said guard is about to get the drop on him. Luckily for Willy, Michelle calls out a warning just in time, allowing Willy to shoot the guard first. Personally, if I were Michelle and my drugged up, estranged husband showed up with his trampy new squeeze to rob my bank, I'd be painting a bull's-eye on his sorry ass rather than saving his life, but I'm weird that way.

NCCarChase.jpg

The car chase leads directly to Michelle's arrest.

NCArrest.jpg

Anyway, after shooting the guard, Rita and Willy decide to make a run for it. They force Michelle to show them to the back door at gunpoint. Again, if I were going to rob a bank, I'd at least know all the exits beforehand, but neither Rita nor Willy seem to have thought that far in advance. In the parking lot, Rita smashes a car window and starts to hotwire the ignition... which, as you know, is a skill all cons have regardless of whether they are bank robbers, arsonists, murderers or car thieves. Willy climbs in on the passenger side. Michelle refuses to let him go. "Willy, stop, you're going to get killed," she exclaims. His goofy grin returns suddenly, a strange change from his near panic of moments earlier. "Wanna bet?" he replies. Um, yeah, I'd love to. Put me down for a ten spot. Sure enough, moments later a newly arrived cop rounds the corner from the bank and plugs Willy in the shoulder... oops, make that the neck, as the wound shifts moments later. Michelle hops into the car to tend to her dying ex as Rita tries to escape by driving around in circles as the cops empty their revolvers into the car. One of the more amusing parts of the little sequence is the way Michelle's position keeps shifting in the different camera angles. Sometimes she's between Rita and Willy in the front seat, sometimes she's the one on the outside. Anyway, Michelle tries to convince Rita to stop the car, but Rita refuses. Finally, Michelle grabs the steering wheel and slams them into a parked car... or something, since she clearly yanks the steering wheel to the right, but the car swerves left just before impact. The cops surround the car. One shoves a gun in Michelle's face. "You're under arrest," he growls.

NCRobot2.jpg

A very funky prison.

Quick cut to a prison yard. A ground of black women are singing and dancing. (Don't blame me, I'm not the screenwriter. I just report it.) We then shift a chunky redhead women touring the yard collecting money from the inmates. She walks over to a real Amazon (Sheila, played by Faith Minton who also appears in Penitentiary III (1987)), the Queen Bee. Along with another henchperson, they approach a busty, blond inmate (we later learn her name is Abbey) in short shorts and a cutoff t-shirt... which doesn't strike me as appropriate prison attire, but, as I often find myself saying as I write these reviews, what do I know? Sheila demands her money, and blondie reaches into her bra and pulls out a wad of bills, although apparently not a big enough wad because she apologizes for being short and asks for more time. The camera angle now shifts so that we're look up at the group of women from underneath.* I presume the decision there was that it would look cool when Sheila slugs the Abbey in the stomach making her double over toward the camera, but all anyone will remember is Sheila's belly and Abbey's boobs jutting out into the middle of the screen. With blondie on the ground, Sheila looms over her and demands the rest of her money, "You've got three days. Then you're on my blacklist." Yes, well those certainly strike me as reasonable terms... more reasonable than my bookie gave me when I came up a little short after a tough run with the ponies.

NCRitaMichelleGun.jpg

Apparently, no one was willing to testify on Michelle's behalf even though the gun to the head hardly makes her seem a willing accomplice.

Now, we shift to an interior shot the a cell... a roomy cell, I might add, with several rows of bunk beds. Apparently most of the prisoners are housed together barracks style. A guard shows Michelle her bed, commenting, "Listen, you look like a nice kid. Don't mess with the warden. Whatever she wants, just give it to her." Ooooooh, ominous. What do you think the odds are the warden is an aggressive lesbian who'll demand kinky sexual favors? Ah, forget it, don't answer that one. I'm more interested in what Michelle is doing behind bars. Later on, we learn that she got three (?!) years as an accomplice on the basis of Rita's testimony against her. Now, first of all, I'm not sure what crime she committed. Yeah, she warned Willy he was about to get shot, but there's really no evidence that she played a part in planning or executing the robbery. I mean, doesn't it seem unlikely on its face that a women would conspire with her ex-husband and his new lover to knock over her own place of work? And if she were to rob her own bank, wouldn't she use her inside knowledge to pull a more stealthy rob rather than a daylight robbery? More importantly, at several times, Michelle claims that Rita's testimony is what is keeping her in prison, to which I say, huh? Who the hell is going to believe Rita over Michelle? Michelle has, as far as we know, a steady job and no criminal record (except for the criminal stupidity of marrying Willy). Rita is a drug user and an escaped con (with a tattoo over her breast for Pete's sake), already wanted for assaulting a police officer and shooting another man since her bust out. Can you say crime spree? I doubt it would take Johnny Cochran to get Michelle acquitted. Michelle's family certainly has enough more to afford competent legal counsel... heck, they own a horse farm. Well, whatever.

NCExtort.jpg

Queen Bee Sheila (left) puts the squeeze on Abbey (right)...

She soon meets Amy (Stacey Shaffner), who sleeps in the bunk beneath Michelle. Amy is a perky little blond. Amy is in for "prostitution, drugs, theft... everything in the book." Everything? How about securities fraud? Anyway, just as Amy and Michelle are exchanging criminal histories, Sheila arrives, accompanied by her henchwomen. At first, Sheila is dubious that angelic-looking Michelle could actually rob a bank, but then Amy jumps in and explains that she robbed a "Security Central" bank. Sheila smirks at that, and then walks away, leaving Michelle a little baffled (especially since she didn't rob a Security Central bank), but then Amy explains (sorta), "She's got a real hard-on for Security Central. She got busted there herself."

NCWardenPlay1.jpg

...and Abbey uses a riding crop on the Warden.

That night, we witness all sorts of strange goings-on. First, one of the female prisoners (Abbey, Lisa London, who got her exploitation career off to a rousing start in the T&A classic, H.O.T.S. (1979)) gets up in the middle of the night and is brought by a waiting guard for a rendezvous with the warden (Angel Tompkins). The warden's pad looks like a porn set, with neon on the walls and other oddities. Abbey is wearing a strange bondage-type outfit, and the warden is dressed in a lacy bustier. The prison beats the warden with a riding crop. Meanwhile, one of the male guards (Smiley, played by Nick Benedict) watches all of this through a convenient keyhole. Smiley's presence suggests that all of this is taking place at the prison, although how the warden could arrange such an elaborate love nest is hard to understand.

NCInfirmary.jpg

Ruby digs into her stash of pot, while Smiley hides in plain sight.

In any case, apparently worked up by watching the warden's antic, Smiley makes a beeline for the infirmary. There he finds Ruby (Valerie McIntosh), a black prisoner with apparently unusual privileges. Ruby is there alone, prancing around naked and smoking pot. Is she sick? Does she work there? All of this is very unclear. Smiley stands off behind a screen and strips off his clothes. Ruby is apparently too busy getting high to notice his silhouette as he does so. Smiley then sneaks up on her... none to stealthily, I might add, but Ruby doesn't see him until he actually jumps on to of her. They struggle for a while, but in the end, Smiley gets the upper hand and assaults her.

NCWardenMichelle.jpg

Michelle and the warden start off on the wrong foot, and their relationship goes downhill from there.

The next morning, Michelle meets the warden, who spouts such gems as: "They call this place 'The Cage,' Michelle, and the longer I work here, the more I think they're right. The guards are zookeepers and you're the animals." She follows that with "As long as you stay loyal to me, I'll protect you. There will be certain privileges." Michelle, reflecting the viewer's sentiments regards the warden quizzically. Before this curious conversation can continue, a guard (Martha, played by Susie London) appears. Martha whispers in the warden's ear, and the warden turns to Michelle and says, "Come with me. I'll show you what I mean." Michelle follows the warden to the infirmary, where they find Ruby's body dangling from the ceiling, with a suicide note scrawled in blood on the wall. The note apologizes to Brenda.

NCBrenda.jpg

Brenda urges nonviolence, but she ends up playing second fiddle to Vonna's more aggressive approach.

Okay, back in the warden's office, she confronts Smiley. "Keep your hands off the prisoners," she exclaims, but given her own extracurricular activities, it isn't hard to understand why Smiley doesn't take her too seriously. In any case, he replies, "I'm allowed to have a little fun in this lousy job." Really? Do you suppose his contract specifies raping the prisoners as a bene? Oddly, the warden seems less concerned with the death of a prisoner or the fact that one of her guards is a rapist. Her real source of anger is that, "I don't enjoy dealing with Brenda." Said Brenda (Aude Charles) soon arrives and demands that the warden protect her people (i.e. the black prisoners). The warden replies that she's running a prison, not a "suicide prevention center," and that anyway, they found traces of cocaine in Ruby's system as well as a joint by her bedside. This hardly seems like the sort of thing a warden would say to try to mitigate her own obligations towards the prisoners, but whatever. The warden claims she has too many prisoners in her care to worry about a druggie. Then she turns things around and tells Brenda, "Keep your people clean, or it's your ass." She then dismisses Brenda perfunctorily, which sort of makes me wonder why she was so worried about dealing with Brenda in the first place.

NCWardenGunshot.jpg

The warden puts a warning shot into the ceiling. Definitely state of the art riot control technique.

Brenda leaves the warden's office and heads down to the lunch room. She confronts Amy who is eating with Sheila and Michelle. Sheila and Brenda exchange words, which I presume is supposed to be a way of calling attention to the racial tensions in the prison. Brenda and Amy go off, and Brenda berates Amy for providing Ruby with dope. Brenda launches into a whole uplift-the-race spiel, about how she's doing what she can to help her people out and so on. She concludes by snapping, "We all knew Ruby was in a bad space. You let her down when needed you the most." This reduces Amy to tears. Amy seems a little sensitive for a hardened con and drug dealer, no? Anyway, as Amy runs across the room bawling, Vonna (Angela Gibbs) jumps her, nearly setting of a race riot, until Sheila and Brenda agree to let the women settle things among themselves. Actually, that's not quite what happens, because Vonna quickly gets the upper hand and starts slamming Amy's head against the floor. This prompts Michelle to jump into the scuffle, and soon she's on the floor getting kicked in the ribs by Vonna. The highlight of this scene is when Vonna tries to stomp on Michelle's face, but Michelle catches her foot in mid-air. Finally, though, the warden arrives with several guards in tow (you'd think there would be guards in the lunchroom, but I guess not). The warden fires her gun at the ceiling. "The next shot I fire will not be in the air." I don't think this is standard riot control procedure, but it works in this case. Vonna tries to blame the fight on Amy, but Brenda sells her out and Vonna gets sent to solitary. The warden then stands over Michelle, bruised and bleeding on the floor and says, "Are you okay?" I laughed.

NCWardenRedShirt.jpg

The warden reiterates her offer to Michelle.

Later, in the infirmary, the warden, now wearing a bright red blouse, tries to talk Michelle into spying on Sheila. Michelle indignantly refuses to be a stoolie, earning her the warden's ire. Anyway, the warden leaves and Amy appears, surprisingly sprightly considering that the last time we saw her she was on the floor of the lunchroom having been knocked unconscious by Vonna. Amy offers Michelle some dope to help her forget her trouble, but Michelle refuses, saying that drugs were what got her into prison in the first place... what with Willy being high and all. Then Amy confides that her boyfriend on the outside, Randy (Seth Kaufman), got her hooked on drugs, and that she quit cold turkey in prison... although since she just told Michelle that she occasionally gets high in prison, I'm not sure what to make of that. The two girls bond... emotionally, I mean; they don't actually tie each other up (that's the warden's territory). Anyway, Amy confides that she still craves drugs, and asks Michelle for help staying clean. As you'll recall from Michelle's conversation with Willy earlier, this is right up her alley.

NCShivHand.jpg

Damn, that hurts!

Various, almost random scenes follows: Abbey and warden fooling around; Amy showing Michelle the wounded bird she's nurturing back to health (but which Amy doesn't plan to release); and Vonna apologizing to Michelle for beating her up. This is all just filler before the main event.

One day in the lunchroom, we get a POV shot as the camera stalks Michelle. Suddenly, an unseen person drives a shiv through Michelle's hand pinning it to the table. Ouch! Can you guess who it is? Yes, that's right, Rita is back and looking for vengeance against Michelle. Unfortunately for Rita, she's not Queen Bee anymore, and Sheila steps in to protect Michelle. Why is Rita upset? "We were in a stick-up together and she straightened out on me." Um, I don't think that's really an accurate description of events, but whatever. Michelle objects, "Because of your lies, I'm going to spend three years in this stinking hellhole." Rita snaps back, "Oh baby, you're not going to survive three months." Tough chick that Rita.

NCShower1.jpg

Michelle showers with her bandaged hand... or is she just dreaming?

We segue to a shower scene. It's late at night, and Michelle is showering alone. Suddenly Rita comes up behind her and slashes her over and over with a straight razor, as the bloody water goes down the drain. A shocking development? Naw, dream sequence. Michelle wakes up screaming, and Amy pops up to console her. She puts her arms around her. "It's all over," Amy says reassuringly. "No it's not, Amy. Oh my God, it's just begun," Michelle replies melodramatically.

The next day, Amy gets a letter and brings it to Michelle. Apparently, Amy's beau, Randy is coming to visit the next day. Amy is worried because she thinks that Randy is going to try to arrange for her to pull a trick for Smiley. How and why Amy suspects this is not all all clear, but as it turns out, she's right. So Smiley isn't just a rapist guard, he's also apparently a john. Michelle has a plan, however.

NCRandy1.jpg

The infamous "Randy." The red rose makes a nice contrast the shark tooth necklace.

She meets Randy instead, and pretends to be a pimp herself (or something), and warns him to leave Amy alone who she hints now works for her. Furthermore, she tells Randy to stay away from Amy and to tell Smiley to "back off." Now, I admit, I don't have any experience in talking to pimps, but it seems to me that this was probably not the best way to handle things. Anyway, that evening, we see Randy tooling around in a red jeep with five of his working girls, dressed in 80's streetwalker attire. They pull into a strip mall, and Randy sends his girls off to work just as Smiley pulls up on his motorcycle. Smiley wants to close the deal with Amy, but Randy tries to deflect him by offering him another girl. "I don't want any of your lousy hookers. I want your lady. A favor's a favor, right?" Smiley replies. Randy tells him to forget about Amy, that she has a new girlfriend, Michelle. Smiley seems surprised at this development. Then Randy tells Smiley what Michelle said about him: "She calls you an impotent sicko, man.... A penitentiary pansy." This whole segment is a little fuzzy. First, why is Smiley bothering to go to Randy to get at Amy, when she's in his prison? Second, what is the nature of the relationship between Smiley and Randy that Smiley can ask for Randy's "lady"? Third, what is the deal with Randy's comments to Smiley. Is he just trying to get Michelle in trouble? Or is he just trying to jerk Smiley's chain? These questions go unanswered because we never see Randy again.

NCNewGuard.jpg

Half-way through the movie and we're still meeting new characters: Rhonda.

More filler: Michelle goes to the prison doctor to get her hand bandaged; the wardens tries again to strong-arm Michelle into spying on Sheila (Why is the warden so desperate for info on Sheila? We never find out); Michelle steals a jar lid from the infirmary and hides it in her bandage; Sheila kills Abbey when she fails to make good her debt; Michelle's rube parents come to visit and they all share a good cry; a new spit-and-polish women prison guard (Rhonda, Lucinda Crosby) arrives and meets the warden; Rita has a tte--tte with the warden and they agree to work together.

NCFightCleavage.jpg

Rita dukes it out with Sheila, flashing a little cleavage in the process.

Suddenly, though, the movie kicks into high gear. Rita deliberately spills coffee on Sheila. She apologizes right away, but in the commotion, she slips a pill into Sheila's drink. Later, in the exercise yard, Rita waits for Sheila to start acting dizzy from the drug, and when she does, Rita slips on a pair of brass knuckles and picks a fight with the much larger Sheila. Even with the advantage of a weapon and a debilitated opponent, it is a close match, with Rita finally prevailing as the other women, including a worried-looking Michelle, look on. After knocking Sheila out, Rita claim the Queen Bee title. She finds Michelle in the crowd: "You're next homegirl," she threatens.

NCMichelleAssault.jpg

Though Smiley gets the upper hand at first, Michelle soon turns the tables.

That evening the warden orders Michelle sent to solitary. She then calls Smiley into her office and hands him a key to Michelle's cell. "You're setting me up with a broad?" he asks incredulously before asking what the warden wants. She replies, "I just want you to be the romantic law enforcement officer you always are." Sure enough Smiley goes down to visit Michelle. She resists his advances, but Smiley is a determined fellow. He slaps her back onto the bed, tears her dress and rips off her underwear. But before he can consummate the act, Michelle cracks him across the face with that jar lid she stole earlier, breaking Smiley's nose. He then picks up his nightstick and goes to attack her, but she kicks him in the groin, and then pounces on him, beating him unconscious. Michelle is quite the little fighter for a wrongly imprisoned bank teller. Still more puzzling is the warden's behavior. Why does she hate Michelle so much? Just because Michelle refused to spy on Sheila? Why not let Rita take care of her rather than encouraging Smiley to attack her, an attack much more likely to come back to haunt the warden if it gets out.

NCMarthaWarden.jpg

Rhonda and the warden examine the key found in Smiley's possession.

The next day Rhonda discovers the still unconscious Smiley with Michelle in solitary. She confronts the warden with the key she found in his possession. "He must have stolen it," the warden exclaims. Rhonda isn't so sure: "Or someone gave it to him." In any case, the warden promises to personally investigate the matter. Rhonda doesn't seem to believe the warden because she goes and talks to Michelle on her own. "I've seen your file," she says, making it clear that she believes Michelle has been wronged. Rhonda lets Michelle go out into the exercise yard after hours, and in a curious scene Michelle uses the opportunities to release the bird Amy's been taking care of... which doesn't seem to me to be a particularly nice thing to do to her friend. Wasn't that bird like Amy's pet?

NCRitaAmyDrugs.jpg

Rita catches Amy in the shower and gives her an unwanted IV.

Anyway, Amy's got bigger problems. Rita attacks Amy in the shower, and shoots her up with heroin to get her hooked again. Bad Rita! Anyway, it works, and soon Amy is going to Rita looking for another hit. "Kitten wants some catnip? Well, then you owe me," Rita says. Okay, now things get a little complicated. Rita goes to see the warden, who threatens her with a transfer to another prison. Rita demands to know what's going on... a sentiment that echoed my own at that point. The warden is pretty vague, saying that it wasn't her doing, but that she knew whose it was. Rita then shifts gears and says that what she really wants is five minutes alone with Michelle. For an innocent gal, Michelle sure seems to generate some strong feelings, doesn't she? Anyway, the warden promises to get Rita her five minutes... if she plays ball. The first thing the warden wants is to get a message to "the blacks." Okay, now it really get weird. Rita uses Amy to deliver the message, and the message is the information that in addition to recently trying to rape Michelle, Smiley also raped Ruby the night she killed herself. The black inmates ask how Amy knows this, and Amy replies that she got it straight from the warden. The black prisoners take this as tacit encouragement for retaliation against Smiley. Oh, and it also turns out that Rhonda isn't a new guard... she's an undercover cop sent in to investigate the prison.

Wow. Lots of plot lines. You've got the whole wrongly imprisoned bit with Michelle. You have Michelle's friendship with Amy, and her attempt to keep Amy clean that fits into the whole anti-drug message of the piece. You have a serial rapist guard and a kinky lesbian warden. The warden encourages the guard to rape Michelle, which he is willing to do because Michelle got in the way of his scoring with Amy by intervening with Randy, but then the warden seems to sell Smiley down the river. You have the blacks against the whites, Rita against Michelle, Rita against Sheila... and on top of that, you have an undercover cop in the mix. Too often WIP movies have too little plot, drifting from shower scene to torture sequence to catfight incoherently until the big jailbreak at the end, but The Naked Cage has to much plot. It makes my head hurt just trying to keep it all straight.

NCRitaKnife.jpg

Rita waits for Michelle, blade in hand.

Anyway, Rita isn't done using Amy. She gives her a key to the basement to give to Michelle using the pretext that it would be a good place to hide (presumable from Rita). Why does Amy sell out her friend? Is she pissed about Michelle releasing her pet bird? Naw, she's just jonesing and would do anything for a hit. Amy suggests that Michelle check it out, and Michelle, though she was able to telling Willy was stoned earlier in the movie, doesn't notice that Amy is a mess here, so she goes down into the basement by herself. The basement is your standard prison lower level, with open steam pipes, crisscrossing catwalks, rats, and several stories of metal staircases.... Of course, Rita is waiting for Michelle. Rita announces herself by cackling ominously. She then charges at Michelle with a knife, but just as she's about to run her through, Amy opens up the locked the door and lets Michelle out trapping Rita behind them. Instead of being grateful for saving her life, Michelle storms away angry that Amy set her up in the first place. This leaves Amy hung out to dry, and Rita quickly takes revenge, shoving broken glass in Amy's mouth and slapping her until she swallows it. Ouch. Amy bleeds to death on the bathroom floor. Sorry to be so terse about it, but there is plenty of plot left that I want to get to.

NCRiotPrepare.jpg

"Tonight's the night..."

Before we have time to mourn for Amy, the movies continues to move forward in overdrive. In quick succession, Michelle buys a shiv to protect herself, the warden conspires with Smiley to "eliminate" Rhonda, and the blacks plan to riot. Vonna eggs them on with this curious speech: "Tonight's the night. Tonight's the fight. We ain't got no spite. We're just doin' what's right." Ah yes, almost makes me forget the St. Crispin's day speech in Henry V.

NCChaseSmiley.jpg

... and Smiley pays the ultimate price.

Alright, so Michelle finds Amy. She approaches Rhonda and tells her about it, and when Rhonda unlocks the gate separating them, Michelle puts a knife to her throat and insists on going to a phone to call the cops. Rhonda's claim that she is a cop doesn't satisfy Michelle, who proceeds to take Rhonda's gun as well. The two women sneak down the corridor toward an outside phone line. Unfortunately, before they can get there, Smiley spots them. He takes a shot at Michelle... or was he shooting at Rhonda at the warden's behest? Who knows? But although he's a trained prison guard and has the element of surprise on his side, and Michelle is just an innocent bank teller, she manages to shoot him before he hits her. Her shot strikes him in the leg, and he topples over the railing down onto the cellblock floor. While this is going on, the black prisoners appear on the other side of a locked gate, calling for Smiley's blood. Now instead of finishing him off herself, Michelle takes the keys off Rhonda's belt and throws them toward the black prisoners, who are now even more enraged because Smiley is firing randomly in their direction, hitting Brenda. Vonna manages to grab the keys and unlock the gate, just as Smiley reloads his weapons. He fires off a couple of shots in their direction, and then takes off. Although he's wounded and dragging his useless left leg behind him, the rioting prisoners don't manage to catch up to him until he runs into a locked gate. At that point, they swarm Smiley, stabbing him to death with dozens of knives and shanks.

NCFindAmy.jpg

Michelle finds Amy in the bathroom.

In the meantime, the warden is meeting with her riot control team. She tells them she wants no bloodshed, and they agree to go in with tear gas... but apparently the director forgot about that because when the riot forces arrive on scene, the very first thing they do is fire off a shotgun at the crowd of prisoners even before tossing a tear gas grenade. Hmmmm. They then charge the prisoners, and are quickly swamped and beaten. While this is going on, Rita grabs Smiley's gun and takes off after Michelle. And while that is going on, the warden appears in full riot gear, and proceeds to take a pot shot at Rhonda, hitting her in the ear. The warden then gets attacked herself.

Michelle leads Rita on a chase through darkened corridors, and through a door marked "Danger High Voltage." No prize for guessing how this one ends. Rita tracks down Michelle, but before she can shoot her, Michelle sprays Rita with a fire extinguisher and manages to knock the gun out of her hand. The two then wrestle hand to hand, and director Paul Nicholas obligingly provides us with several panty shots as the girls fight. Just as it seems that Rita is about to strangle Michelle, Michelle manages to pick up the gun. At first Rita taunts Michelle and tells her she doesn't have the guts to shoot, but when Michelle answers back with an angry litany of reasons why she would (Willy, lying at the trial, Amy) Rita quickly changes her tune. Rita offers to change her testimony, but she can only do that if Michelle spares her life. Michelle softens and agrees, but as she tries to stand up, she slips and Rita kicks the gun out of her hand and picks it up herself. Now Rita aims the gun at Michelle's head.... but, of course, before she can pull the trigger Rhonda shows up. Rita hauls Michelle up and put the gun to her head. She orders Rhonda to drop her gun... and Rhonda, the big dummy, does it. Rita promptly rewards this act of idiocy by shooting Rhonda in the shoulder... but that gives Michelle an opportunity. She shoves Rita backward onto a bunch of exposed wires, leading to a spectacular shower of sparks as Rita fries. Okay, so just to summarize. Michelle shoots Smiley. Smiley shoots Brenda. Vonna stabs Smiley. The riot police shoot Vonna. The warden shoots Rhonda, before getting killed herself by an angry mob. Rita shoots Rhonda. And Michelle kills Rita by electrocuting her.

NCMichelleGunA.jpg

NCRitaMichelleGun2A.jpg

NCRitaEndA.jpg

From the topsy-turvy finale: Michelle gets the drop on Rita, then Rita turns the tables, but in the end, Rita cooks while Michelle goes free...

And finally, the movie is over. Michelle helps Rhonda up, and then next scene is Michelle pulling up at her parent's farm. Free at last.

NCRitaGlasses.jpg

...but I'd rather remember Rita like this.

Looking back, I sort of wonder what the make of the whole anti-drug theme of the movie. Were the filmmakers actually trying to make a statement about drugs? Or was this just a cynical maneuver to deflect critics would might otherwise focus purely on the exploitation elements of the movie? And what about the racial tension sidebar, that in the end really doesn't contribute anything to the plot?

Still, you've got to give director Paul Nicholas credit. Faced with the daunting task of trying outdo his previous WIP classic sleazefest Chained Heat (1983), he definitely pulled out all the stops. Ultimately, there is too much going on, and all the machinations get tedious, but this is pretty fun to watch overall. In particular Christina Whitaker's deliciously over-the-top turn as Rita is worth the price of admission all by itself. She's by turns tough, sexy, and funny. She has real charisma, and it is a shame her career seemed to peter out.

Próxima parada, A Zona do Crepúsculo!

movieposter1.jpg

Aviso: Enredo e final do filme serão contados a seguir.

Segundo Capítulo - Remontagem de "Morra" ("Kick the Can"), dirigido por Spielberg.

Terceiro Capítulo - Remontagem de "Uma vida boa" ("It's a Good Life"), dirigido por Dante.
