Australia: Luhrmann Changes Ending, Kidman and Jackman Do Oprah

Australia director Baz Luhrmann, under duress as he tries to make his Australia delivery date, has been persuaded by Fox to change his tragic ending to a happy one. Whoa.

There's a lot at stake with this movie: what does it mean for the maverick director to give in on that? While Oprah Winfrey went ga-ga over the movie on her show Monday (which ending did they see?)--if an epic romance like this doesn't work for femme auds, it's in trouble. Here's Oprah's making-of featurette.

Nicole Kidman, looking very blonde, graces the covers of both Glamour and Elle.

Brand New Poster for 'Australia' and a Note on the Ending Controversy

Let's let the film speak for itself

By: Brad Brevet | Tuesday, November 11, 2008

The

movie world was lit on fire yesterday as word Baz Luhrmann's upcoming

epic Australia had its ending changed at the insistence of 20th Century

Fox studio execs from sad to happy.

You can get all the spoilery details right here. Well, I had a long

chat with a Fox rep yesterday about the situation, and what I got from

the conversation was that Luhrmann would not have changed the ending

had he not wanted to, regardless of what Fox suits wanted. In a short

email message sent to me one sentence pretty much seemed to sum up the

conversation:

>>>Baz Luhrmann is a "final cut" director and the studio has always been supportive of his choices.<<<

So

now you have both sides of the argument, and when a director is said to

have "final cut" that is a grand position to have for a helmer.

However,

let's push all that aside. Regardless of rumors and speculation, this

is Baz Luhrmann, the guy that brought us Moulin Rouge! and makes a

movie every 5-7 years. How can you not be interested in seeing his next

film?

Fox just sent me a brand new poster from the flick and

to my knowledge it hasn't been seen anywhere else outside of a small

version over at Apple. You can check it out directly below and if you

click here you can get the larger version along with one more new

poster from the film.

Australia stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh

Jackman and hits theaters on November 26. Oh, and Kidman and Jackman

were on "Oprah" yesterday and Oprah's site has a bunch of pics and

recaps from the show, click here for that.

Oprah Goes All Out for Australia

Thanks to reader Josh for tipping us off that Oprah went nuts for Australia on Monday’s show.  Here is what she said:

“I have not been this excited for a movie since I don’t know when.

I’m telling you, have I got the movie for you.   It’s the best movie

I’ve seen in a long, long, long, long time.  It literally swept me off

my feet.”

While this might be due to a shirtless Hugh Jackman it doesn’t

really matter, does it?  She also said “They don’t make movies like

that anymore!”  And she kept repeating “was that a movie?  Was that a

movie?”

She also said “This is the movie to see over Thanksgiving. it is

epic, it is majestic, it is romantic, and the scenery is so gorgeous

you can barely stand it - it’s everything a great movie should be.”

And then Nicole Kidman was interviewed - tall, gorgeous, plumped up

in the face, Botoxed within an inch of her life.  I’m sorry to be so

petty but it freaks my shit out.  I still love her and I’ll probably

plotz for this movie too.

PS: ADOREI ESTA PARTE EM NEGRITO

"...Botoxed within an inch of her life."06
