Members -felipe-
Richard Kelly Talks "Southland Tales" Changes 07-28-2007 (19:30:42) Richard Kelly, director of the upcoming movie "Southland Tales," told Sci Fi Wire that he has considerably altered the film, which wrapped production nearly two years ago. After completion, Kelly took his film to the Cannes Film Festical and had to face a disastrous critical reception. "[We made] a lot of editorial changes in terms of restructuring the order of scenes," Kelly said in an interview at Comic-Con. "We re-recorded all of Justin Timberlake's voice-over, and we added, like, 90 new visual-effects shots. It was truly like a work of progress." Kelly added that the movie has been cut by 20-25 minutes from its initial cut, which was nearly three hours long. "Southland Tales" stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Seann William Scott and Sarah Michelle Gellar in a multilayered story on the eve of an indeterminate apocalypse in a near-future Los Angeles. The film is now scheduled to hit theaters on November 9th. Quote Link to comment

Members -felipe-
Southland Tales Stills, Trailer Info Who says there's no originality left in Hollywood? by Jeff Giles | August 24, 2007 Blog Article | Discuss Article It's got what might be the largest cast and most difficult-to-describestoryline of any major motion picture this year, so of course, Richard Kelly's Southland Tales is being observed closely by many film lovers as it gets closer to its November release date. FirstShowing has been down in the trenches all along, and is now offering some new details about Southland's trailer -- and a pile of stills from the movie.First, some background on Southland Tales, for anyone who hasn't been following along. The film's synopsis describes it like so:Director Richard Kelly follows up cult favorite DONNIE DARKOwith this sprawling epic about a futuristic version of Los Angeles thatharnesses the power of the ocean to produce energy. The eclectic castincludes The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, and Janeane Garofalo.Sounds a little strange -- and it doesn't even get into the appearances of Seann William Scott as twin brothers, Wallace Shawn as a villain named Baron Von Westphalen, a blond Jon Lovitz, and Kevin Smith as a legless vet. Oh, and a musical performance by Timberlake.Clearly, this is one of 2007's must-see films, and if you're one of the people who have been anxiously awaiting the trailer, FirstShowinghas good news -- according to Richard Kelly himself, it will besurfacing on television and the Web during the first week of September. That's just around the corner (check your calendars if you don'tbelieve us), but if you're the impatient type, and are willing tosettle for photos, follow the link below for a gander at some shotsfrom the movie.Source: FirstShowing.net Quote Link to comment

Members -felipe-
Richard Kelly's Future Projects 09-17-2007 (14:00:32) Richard Kelly, who is currently looking to release his long-gestating "Southland Tales," has joined producing partner Sean McKittrick and financier Ted Hamm to form Darko Entertainment. The entity, named for the writer-helmer's cult hit "Donnie Darko," will aim to back modestly budgeted, director-driven films. First up is "Dirty Girl," scheduled to start in November under the direction of Abe Sylvia. Also under the Darko banner is"The Box," a psychological thriller starring Cameron Diaz that is in pre-production. With the Darko venture, McKittrick said, "Our goal is to get behind filmmakers with unique voices and take advantage of the Darko brand to help independent films reach a much wider audience." Kelly's "Southland Tales," a rough version of which premiered in Cannes two years ago, has been retooled and is now set to hit theaters on November 9th. Quote Link to comment

Members -felipe-
Official "Southland Tales" Trailer 09-20-2007 (19:30:32) As promised, we now have the trailer for the new, re-cut version of "Southland Tales." It was kind of difficult to understand what exactly was happening, and overall, the trailer could have been better. If this is how the world ends, why is an actor (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) running around on the beach? "Southland Tales" is set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy. Many people are pretty excited to finally see the film, since Kelly was the man that gave us "Donnie Darko." But also because "Southland Tales" has gone through many delays, negative reviews from the Cannes Film Festival showing, and re-shoots after Sony put in extra funding for some much needed special effects. At this point, it is scheduled to hit theaters on November 9th. Click here to check out the trailer Quote Link to comment
Members SaveFerris
This past weekend Southland Tales screened at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, and the film got some pretty damn good reviews... AICN: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34146 "If you want a simple tale, look elsewhere. This is the type of end of the world conspiracy that you’d expect to come out of Terry Southern or Hunter S Thompson or Kurt Vonnegut. It concerns alternate realities, subversive sub-cultures, neo-politic-paranoia and religious doomsday soothsaying." TwitchFilm: http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/fantastic-fest-report-southland-tales-review#extended "If Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain was too obscure and cerebral for mainstream audiences then Southland Tales, a more challenging film by far, is destined to die a quick and unpleasant death at the box office. That said, for those who make it through the initial overload of information and can latch on to Kelly’s vibe, Southland is also a dazzlingly smart, funny, and engaging work, one that fuses political fears with apocalyptic religiosity and techno-dread and wraps it all in a glossy, colorful package. Southland Tales is far from the mess it has been made out to be, a work that rewards as much as it challenges and succeeds in finding the human, emotional core lurking beneath all of its high concepts." Cinematical: http://www.cinematical.com/2007/09/24/fantastic-fest-review-southland-tales "I like a movie I can watch with a group of friends, then head off to a coffeehouse or bar and have an interesting discussion about what exactly happened and what it all meant. Southland Tales will have us debating through dinner, drinks and dessert ... maybe for several meals." CinemaIsDope: http://www.cinemaisdope.com/fantastic-fest-2007-playing-catch-up-persepolis-dainipponjin-crazy-thunder-road-richard-kelly/ "Southland Tales” I liked. It’s a challenging film for sure but its essentially “Donnie Darko” on a global scale with a really engaging post 9-11 discussion. Kelly’s strong voice of cinema and the stellar ensemble acting make up for an often much more complex than perhaps it needs to be film." Quote Link to comment

Members -felipe-
Sarah Michelle Gellar Defends "Southland Tales" 11-06-2007 (14:30:32) Sarah Michelle Gellar, who stars in Richard Kelly's upcoming "Southland Tales," told Sci Fi Wire that the movie has changed since its disastrous debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006, but not that much. "I think that's also a misconception, too, in terms of how many changes have been made," Gellar explained. "I really do think the movie sort of got an unfair rap from Cannes. Looking back, we all sort of realized, the movie takes place in Los Angeles: It is a story about here, about us, and we truly believe it should have been shown for the first time here. I think it was really the wrong audience. If you're at Cannes, they're looking for a different kind of movie. And that's not what this movie is." Since then, director Kelly (Donnie Darko) has trimmed the film, added several scenes to clarify the complicated narrative and included new visual-effects shots, including a new ending. "I think those were edits that were always going to happen," Gellar said. Gellar added that "the true fans, the people that are the 'Donnie Darko' fans, that are my fans, Dwayne's fans, I think they're going to enjoy it." The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 14th. Quote Link to comment
