Restricted "Brave One" Trailer

08-30-2007 (13:30:32)

headline5087.jpgA

new restricted trailer for Jodie Foster's "The Brave One" has been

released. The reason why it's restricted is due to a bit of language,

lots of killing and the overall glorification of both.

The story revolves around a woman (Foster),

who struggles to recover from a brutal attack by setting out on a

mission for revenge. Her dark pursuit of justice catches the public's

attention, and the city is riveted by her anonymous exploits. But with

the NYPD desperate to find the culprit and a dogged police detective (Terrence Howard)

hot on her trail, she must decide whether her quest for revenge is

truly the right path, or if she is becoming the very thing she is

trying to stop.

"The Brave One" is directed by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire) and is scheduled to be released on September 14th.

Jodie Foster Heading for a Nom in The Brave One

32069877.jpg

Early word came to me privately that The Brave One was not a good

film. However, the buzz around Jodie Foster's performance is deafening.

GreenCine Daily has a mini rundown of how the film is being covered.

They point out the LA Weekly's cover story in particular, which is

somewhat unusual for the artsy weekly newspaper here in LA. What it

appears to be coming down to is that this a redux for Foster's Taxi

Driver experience. The chickens have come home to roost and Foster is

talking about Taxi Driver and somehow it's bringing back memories.

This Rachel Abramowitz piece in the LA Times loosely goes there:

"I never met somebody who was so willing to go where the material

demands that you go. I think she found it quite thrilling," said

Jordan. "Every scene is seen through her eyes. There is a theme in her

films -- I was worried -- where she is horrendously beaten, and

horrendously abused, and she suffers it." He reels off "Taxi Driver,"

"The Accused," "Silence of the Lambs." " I did say to her at one stage,

'You're not a bit scared?' Here [in this movie'] you could be a target

for gun freaks. Something in her wants to put herself in that dilemma."

Foster thrashes her demons in movie after movie after movie.

Foster is doing a lot of press for The Brave One and the press is

responding in kind, giving her equal coverage as they might someone

like Harrison Ford or Tom Hanks. It is a reminder of Foster's truly

astonishing staying power. She is one of the few women who really

evolves in continually fascinating ways, like Meryl Streep or Katharine

Hepburn. Here is a snippet from EW's interview with her:

You won your second Oscar, for Silence, when you had just recently turned 30. How badly do you want another one?

Ha! Sure, that'd be great. But I didn't get them by looking for scripts

that have ''the weight of importance.'' An interesting lesson from

Silence of the Lambs: I had just won for The Accused and — not my agent

so much — but everybody else was like, ''Why are you going to do that

movie? It's a total second fiddle. Anthony Hopkins got the good part

and you are just quiet and don't speak in contractions. You could do a

juicy part!'' I was like, ''That's who she is, and that's how I'm going

to play her. I'm not going to try and compete with him.'' And I won an

Oscar for that. So much for them second-guessing whose part was better.

Yeah, just goes to prove yet again that nobody knows anything.

Instincts can lead an actor down the wrong path sometimes yet Foster is

one who mostly has good instincts. Even her bad movies aren't

unbearable to watch because it's her we're drawn to. Flightplan is a

good example of an absolutely horrendous film that is made watchable

because of Foster's central role. The difference here is that The Brave

One is being tied in with Taxi Driver and that is elevating its status

into awards territory. The press is giving the film an awards rollout,

which all but guarantees Fosters inclusion by year's end. Cate

Blanchett, Jodie Foster, Marion Cotillard, Angelina Jolie (maybe)

and...? Julie Christie.
