E a trilha? Uau!
5.    The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher. A vida, ao contrário, faz mais sentido? A insustentável leveza da mortalidade, segundo Fincher.
6.    Hunger, Steve McQueen.
8.    Let the Right One In, Tomas Alfredson. Amei.
9.    Waltz with Bashir, Ari Folman.
Principalmente se o veneno for passional.

NY Post 4-Star Benjamin Button review

Author: Ryan Adams

Calling The Curious Case of Benjamin Button “a classic for the ages,” Lou Lumenik chooses to forgo critiquing the movie in terms of biomedical probability and decides instead to go along for the dazzling immersive ride:

Once in a while, I get swept up in a movie. At a certain point in David Fincher’s sublime romantic epic “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” I just dropped my pen and waited to see what wondrous thing would happen next. It takes a world-class storyteller and a great yarn to rivet your attention for nearly three hours. This very classy, old-school movie - employing cutting-edge technology that will make your eyes pop - did it for me.

…This is a movie deeply concerned with physical decay, death and loss, but also the opportunities and challenges they present… It’s a very rare movie whose sheer charm, craft and powerful emotional undercurrent disarm critical objections.

Obviously, not everybody is going to feel the same way. But what kind of person wouldn’t hope to?

Crítica do JoBlo.com:

benjamin-button.jpg

PLOT: A child is born and a mother dies. But there is something very wrong with this baby, it has all the symptoms of a sickly, dying old man. The father abandons the child to what he hopes will be a caring environment. This is where Benjamin Button’s life begins, as he is taken in by a loving woman. And as the child grows, his old age seems to disappear into a youthful appearance. It seemingly leads to his birth which must ultimately be his death. A love story lies in between.

bejamin-button-08_680334c.jpg

REVIEW: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is one of the most touching and thought provoking love stories I’ve ever seen. Fate, mortality, life and death, all of this is explored in a beautifully crafted film without seeping into sentimentality. I was almost surprised at how unlike a David Fincher film this seemed. While I feel that he is one of the best directors working in film today, it seemed like this was uncharted territory for him in a startlingly original way. Based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, this tale of a man who finds himself aging backward, is filled with some really beautiful images. Whether it be a haunting war zone in the middle of the ocean, or a beautiful view of the sunrise, it is all as delicate and surreal as life itself can be.

When Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) is born, he is hideous. Not only does his mother die in childbirth, the baby’s father is so shocked and terrified of what he and his wife brought to life that he decides to abandon the child. Although his intention is to murder the “devil” child, the father finds he doesn’t have the heart to do such a thing. This baby by all accounts, has the body of an old and decrepit man, and he is surely soon to die. Thankfully, this child is delivered to a loving woman by the name of Queenie (Taraji P. Henson) who sees to it that he has a normal childhood. And thanks to this young child‘s “mother“, he doesn‘t die. He simply seems to grow young. Ironically, he grows up with old men and women, who are more than a little bothered by the old man/child’s antics. Meanwhile, Benjamin finds himself gaining strength and a youthful vitality each and every day.

While you could put a whole lot of thought about what the film is trying to say here, it would do disservice to generalize it. You could talk about the struggle that any special needs child has to face on a day to day basis. What about the sad and pathetic way some view an older generation. It is safe to say that THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is about all of this, while also presenting a love story that spans generations. It is a very young age that Ben meets Daisy, a name that F. Scott Fitzgerald seems rather fond of. Somewhere in the middle, both Ben and Daisy (Cate Blanchett) meet and have a few moments of happiness. And all of this, is a history that is told through the eye’s of an older woman and her diary. The woman’s daughter Caroline (Julia Ormond) reads to her while everyone around them prepare for Hurricane Katrina. Yes, it is obvious the old woman is Daisy, but it is a splendid idea to bring real life history to this fantasy.

The script by FORREST GUMP scribe, shares similar elements with the Tom Hanks film, but I found it to be much more elegant than Gump. In one particular moment, while Ben and a very young Daisy hide under a table past bedtime, there is a sweet moment of innocence, but soon it treads into a very sad place. A slight complaint I have about the film is that I did find Daisy to be sometimes quite pretentious. She is a dancer in her younger years, and she is full of grace… and pompousness. I found her to be a very shallow individual but as real people do, she matures and realizes there is much more to life than her art. Yet while her character didn’t always hit the right notes, there is a glimmer of the classic WUTHERING HEIGHTS beneath the layers of Button. After all, Cathy is somewhat of a pain in Heathcliff’s side as their epic love story unfolds. In the end, I found Button to be captivating, intelligent and absolutely one of the best films of the year.

I respect the fact that Fincher told a story like this. He created an almost dreamlike, fairytale world that was rooted deep within reality. I have to say, Fincher and Pitt are proving to be as wonderful of a match as Burton and Depp. And speaking of Pitt, I have to say that he is truly remarkable here. His Ben is an innocent, but not ever in a pathetic or weak state. He is able to pull an audience in with his sincere and touching performance. All of this is helped tremendously by some really brilliant make-up and visual effects. What is more impressive than seeing an aging Brad Pitt, is seeing the man in his former twenty-year-old state. Each and every element is collected in a beautiful film that plays like a memory. THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is a gem that will not be forgotten. My rating 9.5/10

Rope of Silicon:

A life lived less ordinary proves it can be seen as extraordinary

BY: Brad Brevet | December 25th 2008 at 12:45 AM

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a story of a man born with the physical characteristics and appearance of an 80-year-old man. He grows younger and younger as the years pass on, which makes him an outsider to those that know of his affliction. However, that is not to confuse physical appearances with the heart, mind and soul of a man. Benjamin Button’s aging process, as has been pointed out by others, is merely a metaphor for how the beginning and ends of our lives are no different whether lived backwards or forward with a focus on the importance of how we live the moments in between. Beyond that, I ask you to not even consider Benjamin’s “curious” aging process and simply get involved in the story.

Benjamin is born in beautifully recreated New Orleans of the early 1900s; his mother dies only seconds later and as a result his father runs off and leaves Benjamin on the doorstep of an old folks home where he will grow up and come to know a caretaker named Queenie (Taraji P. Henson) as his mother. The retirement home is an obvious irony, but it is a perfect one at that; watching an old man scold Benjamin for fooling around on the outside porch in his wheelchair is priceless. From here Benjamin continues to grow into his body. His arthritis soon disappears and he begins work on a tugboat, which leads him into World War II at the age of 17. Seen as an old man, as his face would lead you to believe he is in his 50s, the tugboat’s Captain Mike (Jared Harris) buys Benjamin his first drink and finds him a prostitute for what would be his first sexual encounter. You are experiencing life with Benjamin, a man who always seems an outsider and yet his life is not much different than that of anyone else.

Cate Blanchett plays Daisy whom we first meet laid up in a hospital dying of old age as Hurricane Katrina rages outside. Reading to her is her daughter Caroline played by Julia Ormond. The story of Benjamin’s life is told from Daisy’s hospital room as Caroline reads from Benjamin’s diary and the love between Daisy and Benjamin comes to light. The two first become friends as youngsters and ultimately come together again at a time in Benjamin’s life when his appearance has caught up with his age. The love between Daisy and Benjamin is at the heart of this story and despite its movie love cliches I fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I won’t go so far as to say this is a perfect movie (what movie really is?), but I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. The film is as beautifully told as it is visually appealing. Some are sure to have a problem with the simplicity of it all, but that is a realistic expectation considering the film’s two hour and 46 minute running time, but epic it is not. The simple narrative with one extraordinary factor is the film’s ultimate appeal. However, despite its simplicity and its nearly three hour duration I never once looked at my watch or wondered when it would all end. It felt like no more than 90 minutes and I would gladly sit through it again and hope I get to do so very soon.

From a technical perspective the film is flawless. From the beautiful cinematography by director David Fincher’s longtime collaborator Claudio Miranda to the production designers across the board as this film is certain to be an Oscar favorite in most every design category. The script, adapted by Eric Roth from the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story of the same name will be compared by many to Roth’s earlier Oscar-winning adaptation, Forrest Gump, but the experiences Gump has compared to Benjamin are wildly fantastical while Button’s life is more-or-less ordinary outside of his unique aging process.

Cate Blanchett has already been discussed in many corners as a potential Best Actress nominee for a performance shifting from the life of a passionate dancer, to a lover and to an old woman. Blanchett, as always, is great in the role, playing an active listener as an old woman and a hurricane force as a younger woman. However, the performance of the film belongs to Pitt. I have read anything from praise to dismissal for Pitt’s quiet performance of Benjamin Button, but to me it was flawless.

As a young man Pitt’s aged face was superimposed onto the body of a little person using copious amounts of CGI, but to such a point you can never tell. His character is oftentimes limited to only a couple of words per scene, but it is the quiet and reserved manner in which they are delivered that caught my attention. Benjamin’s voice also serves as the film’s narrative voiceover as Caroline reads from his diary, a point some have harped on and I can’t completely disagree. If there is one problem with the film it is the inclusion of Daisy’s daughter as her reactions to the story are, for the most part, foregone conclusions and offer very little to the emotions of the story. The connection is always between Daisy and Benjamin and had they abandoned the reading of the diary entirely this film would have been shorter and most likely much easier for many to enjoy.

For all its worth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a masterpiece. I believe even its detractors will be able to enjoy it much more as time passes. Some have said the older you are the more you will connect with the story, I am only 31-years-old so I don’t know how much older you need to be, but I see no reason why anyone looking for a great story, told from a unique perspective would not also fall in love with this film.

Eu apoio a iniciativa deste homem. 06.gifYoh2008-12-29 00:25:49

Assisti o filme ontem, não me aguentei 06
