On tap: 'Happy Feet' animates icy Antarctic

user posted image
Flightless family: Nicole Kidman, E.G.Daily and Hugh Jackman give voice.

By Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY

Pirates slashed, fashionistas clashed and superheroes soared. But a certain something was missing from the 2006 summer moviegoing experience.
Something black and white and cuddly all over.

Namely, awww-inducing penguins.

Last year was waddle nirvana with the hot doc March of the Penguins and those stealthy stowaways in the animated hit Madagascar. This year, however, there's been a dearth of mirth from Antarctica.

But George Miller, the man who made pigs talk in the Babe films, will unveil a chorus line of tuxedoed birds when his HappyFeet dances into theaters Nov. 17. The Aussie filmmaker offers a few tidbits about his cartoon adventure, in the works long before those marching penguins made a box-office splash:

•An idea is hatched. Miller first thought of doing a film about emperor penguins after seeing the BBC documentary Life in the Freezer. "I had no idea what extraordinary creatures they were. It was a chance to look at how individuals in a community can't survive without depending on one another." He says Warner Bros. chief Alan Horn bought the French-made March "because he had seen our footage and was sensitized to how interesting penguins were." The sale also allowed the studio to space out the release dates.

•A high-tech fable is born.Happy Feet uses both computer and stop-motion animation to tell the story of misfit Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood), whose lack of singing ability hampers his search for a mate. Instead, he has a knack for tap. "You can't train a penguin to dance," Miller says. "Animation was the only way to do it." Taking cues from Weta Digital's Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the director hired Broadway's Savion Glover to do Mumble's moves — with metallic taps replaced by the sound of a penguin's toenails.

•A musical is found. Miller's fantasy somehow evolved into a tuneful extravaganza — or "an accidental musical," as he calls it. Instead of a distinctive squawk to attract a partner, as they use in nature, these penguins have their own signature pop hits to warble. Everything from The Beatles and the Beach Boys to Queen and Stevie Wonder is sung by such actors as Brittany Murphy (Somebody to Love) and Robin Williams (whose pint-size Adelie penguin croons My Way in Spanish).

•A Prince is charmed Hugh Jackman, as Mumble's Elvis-inflected dad Memphis, and Nicole Kidman, as his Marilyn-inspired mom Norma Jean, perform Prince's Kiss. But Miller wanted to change a lyric or two, and had to ask permission. "We got a denial. Prince said no." But then Warner Bros. decided to show His Purpleness the movie. "Not only did he allow us to change the lyrics," Miller says, but "he said, 'I want to write a song.' It inspired him."

O primeiro mostra Glória, a pingüim dublada por Brittany Murphy, cantando "Somebody To Love", clássico do Queen.

Prince Gets 'Happy Feet' For New Soundtrack
October 04, 2006, 11:10 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

A new Prince track, "The Song of the Heart," will be found on the soundtrack to the upcoming animated film "Happy Feat," due Oct. 31 via Atlantic. The cut, which features slap bass, piano and horns, was written specifically by Prince for the film, which boasts the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Robin Williams.

Kidman and Jackman also team up for a cover of Prince's "Kiss" on the album, while k.d. lang puts her own spin on the Beatles' "Golden Slumbers" and Pink updates the Rufus and Chaka Khan-popularized "Tell Me Something Good."

Elsewhere, Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams and Fantasia team up on Stevie Wonder's "I Wish," Jason Mraz's cover of the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" is mashed up with the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde's version of Bread's "Everything I Own" and actress Brittany Murphy tackles Queen's "Somebody To Love" and the Earth, Wind & Fire classic "Boogie Wonderland."

The soundtrack will also introduce new Atlantic signing Gia Farrell via the track "Hit Me Up." Her debut album will arrive next year.

"Happy Feet" centers around a family of Antarctic penguins. Wood's young character, Mumble, doesn't possess the singing voice for which his species is known, so he leaves the colony and finds adventures with Ramon of the Adelie Amigos and Lovelace the Guru, both voiced by Williams. Williams also contributes a cover of "My Way," sung in Spanish.

Here is the track list for "Happy Feet":

Movie Reviews: 'Happy Feet'

10s.jpg

George Miller's animated Happy Feet is garnering reviews that, if possible, are even more ecstatic than those being dished out for Casino Royale. "A marvelous example of state-of-the art computer animation, Happy Feet is part family film, part Antarctic travelogue, part inspired musical," writes Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times. Lou Lumenick in the New York Post calls it "the best feature-length cartoon since The Incredibles." Gene Seymour in Newsday

observes that it might even be better: "This isn't some overreaching

Pixar wanna-be, but a rich, absorbing story that isn't content to

dazzle you with effects, but rouse your spirits," he writes. Michael

Phillips in the Chicago Tribune also has high regard for it:

"Its craftsmanship and ambition put it a continent ahead of nearly

every other animated feature of the last couple of years," he writes.

But several critics warn that there is a dark side to Happy Feet that parents should be warned about. Concludes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times:

"As politically pointed as it is disturbing, it is a view of hell as

seen through the eyes and ears of creatures we foolishly, tragically

call dumb."

Bilheteria USA: Happy Feet e Cassino Royale fazem história

happy_feet_poster.jpg

poster2p.jpg
