Mayhem master Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster piece “2012” opened to $23.3 million at the domestic box office Friday, putting it on pace for a $60 million weekend that would exceed pre-release projections.

Finishing in second place Friday, Disney’s Robert Zemeckis 3D Charles Dickens adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” dropped 38 percent from its premiere a week prior with $5.5 million.

Source:ERC Box Office,

Edward Douglas

November 15, 2009

2012ww.jpgThe ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here

for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check

back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

Roland Emmerich kicked off the holiday season in earnest with the

biggest single movie weekend box office take since July, as his latest

disaster flick 2012

(Sony Pictures), starring John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor, brought in

an estimated $65 million over the weekend, making it the seventh

biggest November opener ever. Produced for $200 million, Emmerich's

latest simultaneously brought in $160 million outside the United States

for a 3-day worldwide gross of $225 million.
