Beckin

Members Administrator
Christian McKay Strong Supporting Actor Contender Posted by Sasha Stone On November - 14 - 20098 COMMENTS There have been rumblings about McKay’s portrayal of Orson Wellesall year. In one of his Twitter posts yesterday @stevepond wrote thatMcKay was “staggering” in the role and that they’ll run him insupporting “even though he dominates the movie,” he says. Good move, though, as the Best Actor race has now officially becomethe most crowded category. Supporting Actor feels open enough rightnow – it might come down to Stanley Tucci vs. Stanley Tucci vs.Christian McKay vs. Christopher Plummer vs. Christoph Waltz vs. AlfredMolina. It is always a depressing truth every year to find almosttriple the amount of actors to actresses in the Oscar race, bothcategories. Let’s talk quickly about Supporting Actor. By the time the Globesnominations roll out, Supporting Actor starts to feel locked up. Though that isn’t always the case. Matt Damon in Invictus could be alast-minute entry, and who knows who else. It’s a fun game to play andit wouldn’t be fun if it was already all figured out. It is looking pretty good right now for: Christoph Waltz – owns Inglourious Basterds.Stanley Tucci - not only a beloved actor withinHollywood, an underrated one at that, but sure to deliver another greatone in The Lovely Bones, adding to his wonderful turn in Julie &Julia.Christian McKay – take it to the bank.Alfred Molina - it’s going to be hard to not fall in love with An Education — Molina or Peter Sarsgaard should be recognized in the supporting category – both are great.Christopher Plummer – long, love overdue. And then the two from The Hurt Locker, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty. Brilliant performances by both of them. The ensemble for The HurtLocker should see some SAG love if all goes well. There is Woody Harrelson for The Messenger. Jake Gyllenhaal and Sam Shepard are both going to be pushed for supporting for Brothers. It might be silly to mention Zach Galifianakisfor a supporting nod, but the reason he might not be considered hasnothing to do with his work and all to do with his reputation. If hewere a “serious” actor turning in the same performance he would be ashoo-in. It’s just that he’s a comedy guy and no one takes themseriously. For all of the names up for consideration, check out the Gurus chart.

Members Administrator
Brenda Blethyn angles for Oscar attention in ‘London River’ Posted by Guy Lodge · 12:00 pm · November 14th, 2009 Amid the surfeit of underdog titles vying for Oscar glory, a special prize for maximum cojones should go to the producers of indie Brit drama “London River,” who are mounting a campaign for Brenda Blethyn’s superb lead performance — despite the obstacle of the film lacking a US distributor. The film (which was disqualified as Algeria’s Oscar entry due to excessive English dialogue) has just begun a week-long qualifying run in L.A., and if you happen to be around, you owe it to yourself to give it a look. As I wrote in my June review of the film from the Edinburgh fest, it’s a quiet, humane piece dealing with the still-sensitive subject of the London terrorist attacks of July 2005. Despite this political currency, the film doesn’t draw overt attention to itself — but it affords Blethyn her finest showcase since “Secrets and Lies,” tempering the familiar rhythms of distraught-parent drama with less flattering streaks of prejudice and self-absorption. Members MacGruber

Members Administrator
The Oscar show you didn’t see Posted by Guy Lodge · 4:22 am · November 15th, 2009 For those of us not important/famous/rich enough to have attended last night’s honorary Oscars presentation, the Governors’ Awards — tickets began at $350, apparently — Steve Pond has a comprehensive report of the proceedings, complete with pictures and some gossipy details. I’ve complained before about the Academy denying us Joe Public movie fans the chance to see industry titans Lauren Bacall, Gordon Willis, Roger Corman and John Calley finally take a trip to the Oscar podium, but what’s done is done. And to go by Pond’s account, the upshot for them (if not for us) is that they got to bask in the spotlight for longer than the main ceremony would have allowed — though Calley was, unfortunately, too ill to attend. Indeed, despite featuring only four award presentations, the night ran for three-and-a-half hours, the length of most Oscarcasts. Still, despite some organizational hiccups, a good, relaxed time seems to have been had by all. Members Administrator
A Non-Committal Post on Nine I'm not allowed to talk about it yet. Sorry! Give it a week. I will say I enjoyed (whew)and that I thought Marion Cotillard was best-in-show fantastic ...and with that note, I imagine thousands of Cotillard Groupies just went a little slack-jawed given the heated exchanges during Oscar Race '07. I will talk about the Q&A soon, though. The entire cast (sans Sophia Loren) was there and gazing upon Judi Dench and Daniel Day-Lewis in the same space but especially seeing Nicole Kidman and Penélope Cruz simultaneously (you know how I do) made my head explode. I am actually typing this with no head. I am headless.
