Best

Actor Predictions

~ April

Could this be Colin Firth's year?

Following

up a well regarded first nomination with another hugely

baity role

(what does Oscar love more than "royals" or true stories?

Not many things but men with some sort of physical or

mental problem

would be one of them) is a way to get instant traction...

even winning

traction. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

That's

the prediction I feel most confident about. The one I feel

least

confident about is Mark Wahlberg but

then

  1. Oscar loves boxers

  2. They've

    nominated him before

  3. Some

people think he's not a very good actor at all but Oscar

    voters

prove time and again that they don't really care about

    overall

filmography consistency when it comes to the heat of any

    given

    role or film

  4. He

did his very best acting ever for David O' Russell in I

    Heart Huckabees

and that's who is directing him again for The Fighter.

So

it was a last minute "Why the hell not?" call and I like

to take risks and Bridges and Depp seemed too easy. We'll

see.

The Fighter

Role:

"Felix Bush" a hermit in the south who decides to throw

his own funeral party

Why him?

Duvall won his customary great reviews for this role on the

festival

circuit last year.

But...

Can the movie maintain its buzz for another whole year?

Role:

"Valka" one of a group of men who escape a Russian labor

camp

Why him?

Farrell has been working hard and the bad boy rep has

diminished.

Being underappreciated as an actor can have Oscar benefits.

"Oh

wow, you are talented."

But...

An ensemble. Supporting?

Role:

"King George VI" tries to overcome his nervous stammer

Why him?

Momentum means more than just about anything with Oscar.

He's got

it. And they love a royal and a "gimmick"

But...

Sometimes the baitiest projects don't land

Role:

"Walter Black" loves his beaver hand puppet

Why him?

Oscar loves to forgive people (does it give them a sense of

power

and control?) and this role seems like an ideal fit to play

off ideas

about his persona

But...

Comedies sometimes stumble with voters.

Role:

'Irish' Mickey Ward, a boxer in training and blue collar

hero

Why him?

AMPAS loves a good boxing movie and Wahlberg was pretty

great in his

last O'Russell film

But...

This could easily be an overlooked film or mediocre. Who

knows?

Supporting Actor Predictions

Hmmm. My list of predicted men is probably too famous all

told but

I had hunches on all five that I didn't want to ignore.

I'm not

claiming I'll have my best year ever in this category but .

But

I couldn't decide who to drop for perennial snubbees like Mark

Ruffalo (who is quite fantastic in The

Kids...

but he has such trouble getting Oscar voters to recognize

the skill

in his ease onscreen) and Sam Rockwell.

Sorry guys!

When

it comes to year-in-advance predictions in this

category

I often get 2 right. Last year was arguably my best year

ever since

4 of the 5 I predicted ended up in the awards conversation

(Damon,

Maguire, Molina and Tucci) albeit one of them over in

"lead"

where I also predicted another supporting nominee

(Plummer) but

for the wrong category. Point being: It's way too early

for this

but I'm not terrible at this category (even though it's my

least

favorite!) And I do feel unusually confident about this

blindfolded

call.

Can

I get 3/5 a year in advance this time or even 4/5. Greedy

much,

Nathaniel?

Role:

Former boxer and crack addict who trains his half brother.

Why him?

Bale is overdue for a nomination. They love weight loss or

gain

gimmicks and here he goes again risking his bodily health.

STOP

IT!

But...

That reputation could be a problem.

Role:

"Mr. Smith" I'm not sure what the role entails but...

Why him?

It's the long overdue for a win Ed Harris in a long

overdue

for a win Peter Weir film. And that might be enough.

But...

He never seems to win even when the role is quite meaty.

Role:

Speech therapist to the king. Probably a co-lead and they

adore those

in the supporting categories.

Why him?

He's a showy actor (you might say OTT if you're not a fan)

and Oscar

loves scenery chewers.

But...

Hasn't this triple crowner been rewarded enough?

Role:

The father of the protagonist in this "mystical epic" He's

apparently not a cuddly guy.

Why him?

Pitt seems well liked in Hollywood and though Malick's films

don't

generally result in acting nods, they're always good.

But...

He's only in the first half of the film.

Role:

The founder of Napster and the antagonist (of sorts) that

drives the

wedge between the founders of Facebook, kicking the plot

into gear.

Why him?

Could be showy. Oscar likes famous singers making good

onscreen

But...

He'll have to be the standout.

Nossa, não tinha visto o Christian Bale caracterizado. Como sempre impressionante, só quero ver se desta vez a atuação em si vai estar up to par.

E Mel Gibson? No way.

Tree of Life Buzzed

Posted by Sasha Stone On April - 18 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

tm08.jpg

@onthecroisette dug up some comments by “Stan” on a Slashfilm
post
about Vince Gallo (not worth anyone’s time) but when the
chatter turned to Malick’s Tree of Life the thread became interesting:

It has already occurred. He screened it to an audience of

about thirty, and it’s literally 97% done. Our boss was able to see

it, and called it the best film of his since “Badlands”. Emmanuel

Lubezki was in attendance, as was some vfx gurus (one of which was my

boss).

It

will not make Cannes. The visual effects aren’t done, but the footage

that we’ve worked on is near complete. The reason for the delay in post

is because of the amount of detail IMAX 70 MM requires. I can assure

you that the results are worth the wait.

Is the IMAX 70MM footage going to be released in a separate

documentary, or is it to be incorporated into an IMAX release of The

Tree of Life? I ask because there were a lot of rumours about a related

IMAX documentary called ‘Voyage of Time’, but I suspect that might

just have been a codename for additional IMAX shooting for TOL.

Our house is referring to it as “Voyage of Time”. I don’t know if it

will be a separate documentary. Terrence has made sure that we work on

footage without knowing too much of the plot or reason behind it. It’s

always about a feeling or an emotion. He is definitely the most

interesting director we’ve had the pleasure of working with, and

probably the only who’s interacted with the digital artists themselves.

He has never settled for results less than immaculate, but is humble

and patient about it.

In many ways, it sort of feels like the end of everything that this
is news – dredged up from a comment section.  But given the secrecy of
this film and the level of anticipation, I felt it worthy of your time
and attention.
