Well... that's a question we here at The Bits have been asking the folks at Warner Home Video for months now. And today, they surprised us with an answer! Yes, both Lolita and Barry Lyndon are currently being prepared for Blu-ray Disc release by the studio in 2011. And here's the even better news: They hinted that the films are going to be available both as singles AND as part of a new Stanley Kubrick Blu-ray Collection! louco We're waiting on more details, and no doubt it will be a while before the release gets officially announced, but it appears that Warner plans to really do their Kubrick catalog up right on Blu-ray in the new year!

What with Criterion having licensed
Paths of Glory from MGM for DVD and Blu-ray release, could they have obtained rights for Kubrick's The Killing and Killer's Kiss from MGM as well? And with so much new Kubrick Blu-ray product on the way, might Universal see fit to give Spartacus a fresh high-def transfer and re-release the title in a better Blu-ray edition? (Believe me, judging by the hundreds of e-mails we've gotten in recent weeks, a LOT of you would love for that to happen. Rest assured, I strongly suggested it to the studio on my recent visit.)

In any case, the next year or so should prove to be very exciting for fans Stanley Kubrick who, like us here at
The Bits, are eager to see ALL his films in high-definition!

14749_medium.jpgMGM Home Entertainment has officially announced Mad Max

for October 5 in a Blu-ray/DVD pack. Assuaging enthusiasts' fears, the

studio has informed that this dystopian movie, directed by George Miller

and starring Mel Gibson, will feature two 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio

soundtracks: the original Australian track, and a dub track created for

the American release to make dialogue comprehensible to local audiences.

And this time, some of the bonus features from the 2002 special edition

DVD have even made it to the high-def disc.

Special features include:

  • Filmmaker commentary by Jon Dowding, David Eggby, Chris Murray and

Report: Avatar 3D Blu-ray Exclusive for Panasonic in

December; Sony Gets Alice

Posted September 1, 2010 05:18

AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray%203DConfirming earlier

reports (see Blu-ray.com, May

23), HollywoodinHidef.com has it from a "well-placed source" that a

3D Blu-ray release of Avatar

will be released on December 1, but it will be exclusively available

with the purchase of Panasonic 3D TVs and Blu-ray players. In turn, a 3D

BD of Tim Burton's Alice

in Wonderland will be bundled with Sony 3D hardware.

In February, Avatar director James Cameron had said to the Wall

Street Journal that a 3D Blu-ray of the movie would come out in

November (see Blu-ray.com, February 18). That was

promptly denied by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with a note that

said verbatim: "3D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out

on 3D Blu-ray in November" (see Blu-ray.com, February 19).

The exclusivity period hasn't been specified for either title, but is

said to be "unusually long" for Avatar.

The (2D) Collector's

Edition Blu-ray of Avatar will be released in November.

Report: Lion King 3D Blu-ray, Beauty and the Beast 3D Blu-ray in 2011

Posted September 2, 2010 03:45 AM by Joshua Wingfield

Blu-ray%203D

According to a "knowledgeable source" quoted by Hollywoodinhidef, Walt Disney Studios is converting The Lion King to 3D with a view to a 3D Blu-ray release in the fall of 2011 (coinciding with the advertised Diamond Edition Blu-ray). Beauty and the Beast is already converted, and could also get a 3D Blu-ray release in late 2011, after a 3D theatrical re-release earlier that year.
