contra o atual regime iraniano, do presidente Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

There’s

almost a somnambulistic quality to Browning’s performance that makes

you curious to know how Lucy became so anesthetized. But Leigh’s cryptic

clues are stubbornly and self-consciously elusive, leaving the

character’s potential complexity untapped. Visually, too, the film

remains uninvolving, its glacial pacing further slowed by exceedingly

sparing camera movement, resulting in a look that's neither sensual nor

unsettling.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rev...-review-187555

Variety

More tiresome than anything, Australian novelist Julia Leigh's debut

feature, "Sleeping Beauty," concerns a self-abasing college student who

doesn't distinguish among her various dead-end jobs, one of which

involves being drugged into a near-coma and manhandled by strangers.

Leigh's arty (not to be confused with artistic) treatment of such

provocative subject matter derives from her own 2008 Black List-blessed

screenplay, though the film's frustratingly elliptical style and lack of

character insight give it a distinctly first-draft feel. Racy subject

and ample nudity should land this Jane Campion-endorsed production some

decent fest exposure before rubbing ratings boards wrong around the

world.

Whereas classical Hollywood cinema relies on the so-called

"goal-oriented protagonist," too many recent independent pics favor the

opposite extreme, building laconic, momentum-free narratives around

disaffected, near-catatonic young people. Leigh elevates this

uncompelling personality type to existential levels, suggesting a

character so haunted by death she hardly allows herself to feel anything

in life. By extension, we hardly feel anything either, even as the film

lapses into a series of ostensibly shocking physical violations.

[...] Otherwise, "Sleeping Beauty" is maddeningly elliptical, depriving

auds of virtually any of the details they need to understand, much less

relate to the character. It's fair to call Browning brave for taking on

this role, but she's too wooden and inexpressive here to invite us into

Lucy's interior space.

Guy Lodge

SLEEPING BEAUTY (B+) Cool, kinky breadcrumb trail leads to a rangier

exploration of human contact; each frame seems assembled with tweezers.

Startling breakthrough for Emily Browning, not just for obvious reasons

of "bravery", but for the wit she brings to surgical-steel material.

Suspect SLEEPING BEAUTY will have fierce detractors. Cannes to be

commended on putting something this fresh and untested in Competition.

Among other virtues, SLEEPING BEAUTY has a line I do not expect to hear

in any other movie: "Make sure your lipstick matches your labia."

presente no segundo dia do Festival de Cannes através do drama We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Escrito e dirigido por Lynne Ramsay, o filme estrelado por Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly e Ezra Miller

provocou a plateia.

terminasse, outros aplaudiram calorosamente. Segundo a cineasta, a

"Me

Em We Need to Talk About Kevin,

The

Kid With a Bike (Dardennes): 64. These guys are incapable of making a

bad movie. Turns out they can make a really minor one, though.

Quote:

Upon reflection, not sure "minor"s le mot juste. LORNA felt to me like a

tentative step in a new direction. This feels like a retread.

Quote:

They do continue experimenting with the (very) intermittent use of a score, but I'm not sure that's really working for them.

--------------------

A Hollywood Reporter e a Variety adoraram.

---------------------

Jonathan Romney in Screen: "After the slightly sub-par Lorna's Silence

(2008), the brothers are back on peerless form with this story of

innocence betrayed and befriended, which must count as one of the best

films about childhood since Kes — or for that matter Bicycle Thieves, to which it surely nods."

"This is another gentle triumph for the brothers," agrees Drew McWeeney at HitFix.

Rope of Silicon:

Tree of Life starts out on the right track, but derails and turns into a bunch of disjointed mumbo-jumbo about 30 minutes in

Total Film: The Tree Of Life: utterly mesmerising first hour, slightly listless

second, generally unmissable...visually breathtaking and technically

masterful, but excruciatingly drawn out and annoyingly pretentious.

ICSfilm: A deeply affecting poem about all of us. The Tree Of Life exceeds expectations.

The Hollywood Reporter: A unique film that will split opinions every which way, which Fox

Searchlight can only hope will oblige people to see it for themselves.

Variety: Few American filmmakers are as alive to the splendor of the natural

world as Terrence Malick, but even by his standards, "The Tree of Life"

represents something extraordinary. The iconoclastic director's

long-awaited fifth feature is in many ways his simplest yet most

challenging work, a transfixing odyssey through time and memory that

melds a young boy's 1950s upbringing with a magisterial rumination on

the Earth's origins. Result is pure-grade art cinema destined primarily

for the delectation of Malick partisans and adventurous arthouse-goers,

but with its cast names and see-it-to-believe-it stature, this

inescapably divisive picture could captivate the zeitgeist for a spell.

The Playlist: Firstly, “The Tree Of Life” is not the cinema-changing, soul-shattering

masterpiece it has been built up into. That said, it’s a hugely

ambitious and occasionally brilliant undertaking that finds the director

using the story of a fractured relationship between a father and his

children to ask the question of ages: where is God?
