Shyamalan's Avatar vs. Cameron's Avatar

Date: January 8' date=' 2007

M. Night Shyamalan is planning his own Avatar. This one based on the Nickelodoen cartoon series. Shyamalan signed a three-picture deal with MTV Films to adapt the anime Avatar: The Last Airbender for the bigscreen. He will write, direct and produce the live-action franchise.

Paramount

confirmed the pact with Shyamalan just hours after Fox Filmed

Entertainment announced it is greenlighting James Cameron's Avatar, the director's first feature since "Titanic."

Although

they may have the same name, the two projects have nothing to do with

each other in terms of storylines. Cameron's is a sci-fi

action-adventure that he's been working on for 11 years.

Both

studios are already digging their heels in for a media battle.

Paramount has registered the name of its project with the Motion

Picture Assn. of America while a Fox rep said, "We own the movie title

'Avatar.' There won't be another film called 'Avatar' coming from

anyplace."

Studio vs. Studio! Mano y Mano! In the end, they'll

both realize a fight is bad for business and try to hash some kind of

release deal. Just like New Line did with Austin Power: Goldmember when

MGM sued them over the name Goldmember. Part of the settlement involved

New Line shifting release dates around.

Avatar

marks the first time Shyamalan has taken on a project that didn't

originate from his own source material. It's also the first kids' film

he's worked on, although he said his last film, Lady in the Water, began as a bedtime story for his children.

Avatar

is set in an Asian-influenced fantasy world permeated by martial arts

and magic, follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of

Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire

Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

Avatar

is one of the only cartoons I can watch with my daughter. We spend alot

of time talking about if we'd choose water, earth, air or fire bending.

I know she'll be thrilled to hear this news.[/quote']
