Assista logo abaixo.

The series premiere of Beauty And The Beast had a solid debut last night - versus last year’s season premiere ofThe Secret Circle it was off just a tenth in adults 18-49 (1.2/3) and two tenths in adults 18-34 (1.1/3).

Versus this same week last year, Beauty And The Beast is up across the board in the time period, up 22% in adults 18-34, up 14% in women 18-34 (1.6/4) and up 50% in adults 18-49 (1.2/3).

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: "PILOT" REVIEWHE'S A HIDEOUS FREAK!

Well, ladies? How brave is it? Are you, say, brave enough to fall in love with a large, attractive muscular man who's totally devoted to you and available 24/7? Do you have that kind of courage? Because if not, there's the door, missy!

Hoo boy.

Back in '87, CBS ran a show starring Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy), which was a modern take on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. Hamilton played Catherine, an ADA who, due to a traumatic incident, develops an empathetic bond with a "beast"-type man named Vincent (Perlman) who lives down in the tunnels underneath Manhattan. Perlman had the full-on prosthetics going, giving him a lion-dude quality and allowing the story to truly be about Cat falling for Vincent's inner beauty. Anyhow, it wasn't that great. It lasted for three seasons, the last of which didn't even have Hamilton. But whatever your opinion of the series, you'd probably agree (if you're old enough) that it was memorable. If for no other reason than there weren't a lot of shows on TV back then outside of CBS, NBC and ABC and this one starred a guy with extensive lion make-up and Sarah Connor.

It's all they can do to keep from puking on one another.

So from the ashes of that series comes this kinda/sorta CW remake starring Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as Cat (now a detective) and Jay Ryan as Vincent. Foul, disgusting Vincent. A man so vile, and horrible to look at, that mighty men soil themselves when confronted with his grotesque features. And by this, I mean... he looks like a straight-up Abercrombie & Fitch model. Marred only slightly by a scar running down his right cheek. Because there's nothing more off-putting and beastly than a carefully crafted and meticulously placed Xamot scratch.

Seriously though, I'm taking a cheap shot here. But it is one of the most glaring and laughable things about this new version. Yes, actors and actresses on CW shows have to be ridiculously attractive. We overlook this most of the time because the network has a specific sheen to uphold. But when we're given a scene featuring Cat trying to comfort a brooding Vincent, who believes he's not human even though he looks stupendouslyhuman and devastatingly good-looking, it's going to make us want to put our head through a wall. And I am so so glad that one of the promo pictures from this pilot episode actually features the scene I'm talking about (above, yo).

A buff, handsome dude actually lowers his head and says he's a monster. That's just too much. It can't not be mocked outright. But let's step away from this aspect of the premise and get into the actual show. Because the rest is just as awful as you'd expect given the scenario I just described. Cat, a studious hot chick on her way to becoming a lawyer, decides to become a cop after her mom is killed in front of her. Years later, remembering the "beast" who rescued her, she tumbles down a rabbit hole of sheer idiocy while trying to solve the mysterious murder of a fashion magazine editor. A hole that involves Vincent, a doctor-turned-soldier supposedly killed over in Iraq, resurfacing to reveal that he was part of a rogue, experimental government super-soldier program.

It's all truly terrible. And the fact that they even try to throw in a bit of somber 9/11 sentimentality? Revolting. And now, on top of trying to figure out who the dashing weirdo is in the abandoned chemical plant, shadow agents are after Cat because she knows too much. The dialogue will make you cringe, the story will make you wince and the textbook "instant love" will have you searching for the arsenic. I can see that they might be trying to go for the a Buffy/Angel vibe here. Vincent hates himself because of some things he might have done when in a chemically induced rage-state. But nowadays, from the looks of things, he can control his "beast" state just fine. Only using it to leave his self-imposed confinement and help citizens in need. In fact, when we see him beast-out clearly, he's doing it on purpose in order to scare Cat away.

Yes, Vincent's mug does change. He lapses occasionally into "Lost Boys" face; overgrown, suborbital bones and some fangs - you know the drill. So it's not like he doesn't have a more monstrous side. I don't want to misrepresent. But his natural state is "Johnny Handsome." And so the only thing that really kept anyone interested in the old '80s series isn't even present here. Cat never has to look for any sort of "inner beauty." She just has to try and convince Brad Pitt that he's not Gilbert Gottfried. Or maybe, you know, it's best that she doesn't. Keep him in line. Idiot beast face.

This is jacks*** TV. Just trivial stuff. And the strangest part, which I assume will be a part of the construct going forward, is that Cat spent a large part of the episode dealing with the even duller murder mystery, which had nothing to do with the Vincent plot save for the fact that it, in a round-about way, led her to Vincent's door. Other than that, it played out like a typical cop-show case, complete with cheating husbands, jealous co-workers, forensic jargon and lab results. Cat would just occasionally pop away to go mope with Vincent, convinced that the two of them could somehow "save" each other. Which is code for "f***" each other.

Beauty and the Beast - S01E01

A Bela e a Fera.
