UPDATE: I’ve been predicting for a while now that Thursday is the new Friday — and soon Wednesday will be the new Thursday — when it comes to movie release dates. Now Warner Bros announced this morning that it is moving up The Hangover Part III to Thursday May 23 “with traditional late shows” that Wednesday. (Toldja!) “Early exhibitor screening reactions have been sensational,” distribution czar Dan Fellman tells me after Part II was considered only mediocre at best. This is the time of year when the major studios start jockeying for position in the theaters to obtain even the slightest advantage. Not to mention to pad first-day Friday grosses. Warner Bros looks to beat the Memorial Day heat, slotting its comedy threequel a day ahead of Universal’s Fast & Furious 6. ”Sounds strange that they would want to diminish the weekend gross they will be reporting by opening one day earlier,” one Uni exec noted to me. “Perhaps they heard that Fast 6, which trade screened yesterday, was fantastic?” Warner Bros was hugely successful releasing The Hangover Part II over Memorial Day weekend 2011. Meanwhile 20th Century Fox’s CGI toon from Blue Sky Studios, Epic, also opens Memorial Day weekend, relieving  a long drought of family-friendly fare.

Ouch: The ‘Hangover Part III’ Reviews That Will Make You Cringe

Warner Bros. may want to pop a few Advil before reading the reviews of “The Hangover Part III.”

The latest installment in the “Hangover” franchise, opening Thursday, has received just as much if not more of a negative than the poorly-received “The Hangover Part II” in 2011.  The Rotten Tomatoes score for “Part III” actually dipped below the dismal 34% scored by its predecessor on Wednesday, though more reviews could change that in the days ahead.

Given that the second film tanked with critics but still managed to bring in around $85 million during its opening weekend, the “Hangover” series itself may be critic-proof (early tracking over the five-day Memorial Day weekend has it bringing in close to $100 million domestically).

Still, these reviews are just brutal.

Here 10 of the worst reactions to “The Hangover Part III”:

“This is an ugly, angry picture.”

-Soren Anderson, Seattle Times

“Proving that lightning doesn’t always strike twice — let alone three times — the final installment is such a colossal failure that there’s no reason for it to exist at all.”

-Scott A. Mantz, Access Hollywood

“It seems to have one goal: to be so dark, nasty and joyless that audiences won’t want Part IV.”

-Rafer Guzman, Newsday

“Bad scripting, bad plotting, terrible joke formulation, and not a single character actually having a hangover until part-way through the end credits. What kind of a Hangover movie is this?”

-Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph

“At times it’s debatable whether “The Hangover Part III” should even be considered a comedy at all, as it more often plays like a loopily plotted, exposition-heavy actioner.”

-Andrew Barker, Variety

“This picture is like a brightly colored balloon with all the comic air seeping out.”

-Stephen Farber, The Hollywood Reporter

“Part III’ has curiously little interest in being even remotely funny.”

-David Fear, Times Out of London

“Breaking the mold is usually a brave and admirable cinematic act, but when it crashes the party here, it proves to be the ultimate big screen buzzkill.”

-Erin Free, FILMINK (Australia)

“To quote a line from the movie, bad things happen and people get hurt.”

-Steven  Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer
