Se no ano passado a gente reviveu o triste processo de suicídio (e um pouco de homicídio também) de Amy Winehouse, neste ano revemos o processo de suicídio, este um tanto mais patético, de "Weiner". Anthony Weiner mais parece um daqueles personagens meio boçais de sitcoms dos anos 80, mas que ao menos rendeu uma história muito bem montada e que sorte dos envolvidos nas filmagens. A coisa fica toda ainda mais patética se pensarmos no desenrolar das eleições deste ano por lá.

Em se tratando de múltiplas histórias, é sábio guardar a melhor para o final. "Certain Women" adota essa estratégia e deixa o espectador com uma sensação de que não perdeu completamente o seu tempo. Não recomendaria o filme a ninguém (falta sal, falta tempero, falta algo que levante o sabor) mas adoraria picotá-lo e tirar a cena da Lily Gladstone e da Kristen Stewart e mostrá-la a todo mundo, pois é bem bonita mesmo. Aquela teve premiações em Boston, San Diego, e a inesperada vitória em Los Angeles, que a coloca no jogo para uma remota indicação em Atriz Coadjuvante. Michelle Williams ganhou Nova York pela sua participação em "Manchester By the Sea" somada a deste filme aqui, mas foi mais uma sinalização: "Sim, nós vimos o seu ano!", porque, na real, ela não faz nada de mais.

 

É uma obra silenciosa, quase monótona, com direção minimalista, que defende, em subtexto, que mulheres trabalham muito mais que homens; não têm o apoio social que merecem; e que seus sentimentos muitas vezes ficam engessados em segundo plano.

Não sei se as pessoas têm consciência de fato do quanto os filmes do John Carney são um evento raro. "Sing Street" é uma comédia autobiográfica musical, com músicas originais. Não é fácil! Não é algo rotineiro! Os analistas do Oscar têm destacado que "La La Land" é um musical original ( no sentido de que há músicas apresentadas pela primeira vez no próprio filme), e isso não acontece desde a obra-prima, o sublime e insuperável, "All That Jazz", mas por que não estender um pouco desses louros ao trabalho do John Carney, nos últimos anos? 

 

"Once" é aquela maravilha (Pablo chama de obra-prima); "Begin Again" é de entusiasmar (Pablo chamou de "subestimado"); esse "Sing Street" é por aí também. 

 

É inteligente mas não põe banca. Tem escolhas de direção muito boas, discretamente boas...Exemplo: A primeira vez em que vemos a garota dos sonhos é no alto de uma escadaria, um modelo inalcançável de beleza; e depois, ao final, ela está ao rés do chão, desmitificada, dizendo-se até constrangida, de ser "baixinha". A Direção de Arte é outro achado. Não é apenas uma reconstituição de época, mas ela acrescentou detalhes que me fizeram ficar encantado com a sutileza. Por exemplo, um retrato de Freud no meio do quarto do irmão do protagonista. E o que isso tem de mais? Não só apontar que ele é um cara inteligente, culto, interessado no saber, mas...vejam vocês...digam se eu estou "viajando" muito...Freud nunca deu bola para o papel dos irmãos na formação do indivíduo! Tudo é pai e mãe, pai e mãe, pai e mãe. Ora, este filme é a prova de quanto os irmãos são essenciais na elaboração do nosso gosto (até por repulsa, até na contramão), essenciais na construção do nosso caráter. Pra mim, foi demais ver a dinâmica de um irmão ensinando ao outro sobre música, sobre discos importantes do Rock, sob as bençãos do Freud no centro da tela. E o que Freud diria do garoto usar a música para se esconder do desacordo dos pais? 

 

Os atores são um sonho de carisma! Lucy Boyton (no momento filmando o novo Assassinato no Expresso Oriente") é tipo...Nasce uma estrela! Que beleza! Que talento! As cenas de composição das músicas são deliciosas! Pablo escreveu antes de mim - droga! - mas são quase um John lennon e um Paul McCartney crianças! As filmagens dos clipes antigos funcionam em retrospectiva como uma homenagem aos primeiros videoclipes, sempre tão zoados pelos Marcos Mion do futuro, mas que são encantadores por sua singeleza. Como eu sou fã absoluto de "The Smiths" fiquei ainda mais feliz de captar a homenagem ao clipe da lindíssima "Ask". Pulei da cadeira. E como também sou fã de "The Cure", que maravilha ver as crianças vestidas como a banda, indo para o colégio, felizes e orgulhosos na persona de "esquisitos da escola". Só quem foi o loko do segundo grau entende esse sentimento de "preconceito + orgulho + tiração de sarro" ( que certamente deve ter uma palavra em alemão). Não posso deixar de falar da cena do baile do colégio, evocando "De Volta para o Futuro", perfeita em timing, cenário, e figurino. Mesmo assim, não posso deixar de notar que o filme cai de ritmo no final, talvez até com problemas na execução dele. Mas mesmo assim tá valendo.

 

John Carney está virando um dos meus diretores preferidos. Torno-me fã de qualquer pessoa que consegue desamarrar a inteligência da presunção.

 

O filme tem chances em Canção, num ano bastante supedisputado. Acho que entra com "Drive it Like You Stole it".

 

Povo que considera "Sully" para o Oscar, tenho uma coisa pra falar pra vocês...Gente, cês tão perdendo feio, tão perdendo rude...Faz uma pipoca, pega um refrigerante, e vai se divertir com "Sing Street". Cinema é algo bem parecido com isso. Pergunta pro Godard.

 "Loving" é um ótimo filme. Gostei muito da reconstituição de época, do figurino, e de sua trilha sonora. Em alguns momentos, senti falta de maior emoção, mas entendo a decisão sobre o o tom do filme acompanhar o perfil discreto dos retratados. Foi correto. Ruth Negga está muito bem, mas sinceramente não entendo o hype em torno da atuação. Ela está muito bem, sim, mas creio haver uma confusão entre a excelência da performance com a importância do personagem. São duas coisas diferentes. Um comentário aleatório: olhos grandes como o dela são incríveis para o cinema!  Num outro giro, achei Joel Edgerton excelente - melhor do que ela, inclusive. São duas "understated" performances, do tipo que encontra dificuldade para arrebatar prêmios maiores. Não os vejo sendo indicados, a menos que insistam na relevância da história e na importância de se contar essa história. 

 

Parece inacreditável, é bizarro, mas isso aconteceu. E ainda acontece. Daqui a alguns anos, farão um "Loving" sobre pessoas do mesmo sexo.

Posso compartilhar uma besteirinha com vocês? Bom, é que por curiosidade andei lendo uns comentários no Filmow, e me deparei com um longo comentário meu que fiz aqui no Fórum do Oscar sobre um filme que gostei muito (vou propositalmente omitir o nome) colocado na íntegra por uma pessoa que vez ou outra aparece no fórum; um comentário sem aspas, sem nenhuma referência ( do tipo "um chegado meu escreveu o seguinte..."), e até com meus vícios de linguagem coloquial ("putz..."). Não tô caçando problema, nem armando pirimba, não. Francamente, nem fiquei chateado. São coisas naturais da internet. E, obviamente, minha opinião gratuita não tem a menor importância.

 

Só achei por bem esclarecer que não copiei e colei a opinião de ninguém de lá, não. E dá pra notar que um texto é meu só pela minha conhecida obsessão por Oscar, em todas as categorias, e como meu texto reflete sempre sobre os rumos da próxima premiação. Eu escrevo só aqui, tão logo acabo de ver o filme.

Qualquer pessoa que assista a "The Handmaiden" daria o Oscar de Production Design ao filme. Basta assistir, ou, melhor dizendo, testemunhar. Seong-hie Ryu fez um trabalho estonteante! "Mother", "Memórias de um Assassino", "Sede de Sangue", todos eram formidáveis, mas aqui ela se superou! Tanto que ganhou Los Angeles e o prêmio artístico de Cannes. Puxando pela memória, o estilo oriental costuma se dar bem nesta categoria, lembro-me do Oscar ao (terrível) "Memórias de uma Gueixa", e ao ( maravilhoso) "O Tigre e o Dragão" . Por enquanto, a sensação é que David Wasco, de "La La Land",  está na frente, mas creio que seja por que nem todo mundo ainda viu o filme coreano.

 

Citei essas produções do passado recente porque elas guardam ainda conexões reveladoras do que a Academia aprecia. O estilo oriental costuma render indicações não apenas em design de produção, mas também em Fotografia, e em Figurino ("Memórias de uma Gueixa" ganhou as estatuetas nas respectivas categorias; "O Tigre e o Dragão" venceu em Fotografia, e foi indicado em Figurino). Relembro isso para perguntar: em que mais categorias este filme entrará? Claro, sabemos que Coréia do Sul conseguiu superar o Brasil em burrice, ao não indicar seu melhor filme, e como consequência não vai disputar Filme Estrangeiro, mas é possível que o filme, caso visto, entre em Fotografia, Figurino, e Trilha Sonora (mais uma vez a comparação, "Memórias de uma Gueixa" foi indicado, "O Tigre e o Dragão" venceu -  fruto do trabalho do grande compositor Tan Dun, que, entre outras coisas, fez a maravilhosa música da cerimônia de Pódio das Olimpíadas de Pequim, a que a do Rio 2016 não deixa nada a desejar, sendo ambas já consideradas as mais bonitas de todos os tempos). Nathaniel Rogers escreve que é difícil saber quando e como os estrangeiros conseguem superar o muro nacionalista nestas categorias. Não é fácil de prever. Tem que acompanhar a carreira do filme. "The Handmaiden" está indo bem entre os críticos. Como eu disse lá em cima, só precisa ser visto. Falando do trabalho do fotógrafo Chung-hoon Chung... a primeira cena de falta de energia na casa me deixou de boca aberta! Um dos instantes mais bonitos que eu já vi. E depois veio aquela primeira cena de sexo, e depois veio AQUELA "outra" cena de sexo!  Como não indicá-lo? A trilha sonora é lindíssima, também. Tá na lista de possíveis indicados?

 

No começo do Fórum, eu já escrevi tudo que eu acho do Chan-Wook Park. Já vi tudo dele. Uma pessoa capaz de fazer um filme com um iPhone4, "Night Fishing", e um filme com  máximo de apuro estético como este. Não sei se "The Handmaiden" supera "Oldboy", mas é isso, minha gente, o lacre continua! O bonde come feio, mano! Cê me deixou na sucata, meu irmão!

 

E ainda aprendi sobre filmes "Yuri"! Nunca tinha ouvido essa expressão antes. Depois de pesquisar, o filme fez muito mais sentido para mim.

Povo em Sundance estava fora da casinha quando imaginou que "The Birth of a Nation" seria um virtual Best Picture no Oscar. Depois dos prêmios do Júri e da Audiência, fui na onda e na minha lista de abril o apontei como ganhador em Roteiro Original, Ator, e Filme. Enquanto isso, faziam première fora de competição: "Captain Fantastic", "Manchester By The Sea", "Sing Street"...Quando é que um filme que mostra a Bíblia como instrumento de sedição vai ganhar alguma coisa? Só se for no Cine-Leonardo Boff! 

 

Quem apostava que esse filme iria ganhar o Oscar deve torcer pra time do Celso Roth: 1x0 é goleada, e 0x0 "é nóis"! É um filme apenas mediano, e que infelizmente sai esmaecido na comparação com o trabalho de arte que é "12 Years a Slave", ainda muito fresco na memória de todos. O que eu mais gostei no filme foi da atuação da Aja Naomi King: muito sutil, linda, delicada. E o que eu menos gostei no filme foi detectar similitudes em demasia com "Django Unchained", "Braveheart", e "12 Years a Slave". Similitudes de...estilo. Nas roupas. A sede da fazenda. Situações de dinâmica dos atores. O conflito final. Não se criou um mundo imagético novo! Não é que eu queria desvirtuar a reconstituição de época, ou pregar a reinvenção na roda dos filmes de escravidão. Mas tudo imageticamente foi burocrático por demais! Com exceção da cena do funil, nada mais me levou para um lugar novo no mundo do cinema! O hino "Strange Fruit" naquela cena em particular...vou apanhar no meio da rua...mas não deveria estar no filme. Não é pela inadequação temporal, não. É que quando começa a tocar, você já sabe o que vem. Em resumo, tudo é cinematograficamente previsível. 

 

Entretanto, eu não vou atirar pedras no Nate Parker pela sua história pessoal - pois autoria e obra não se confundem - e também porque o cara teve a coragem de escrever/produzir/dirigir/ atuar ( a melhor faceta é a de ator). Tudo feito de cara limpa, com dignidade. 

 

Vamos pra outro, Nate! Que todo mundo nesta vida aprende, aprende, e morre burro!

Uma dos efeitos que o Oscar tem sobre mim é querer me fazer ler alguns livros que serão adaptados, que, em outras circunstâncias, eu jamais leria. "The Light Between Oceans" está entre eles. Que surpresa é poder dizer com conhecimento de causa que o filme é melhor do que o livro! O que criticam no filme deve-se à história em si. Porque a adaptação do Derek Cianfrance limou tudo que conseguiu! É uma adaptação fiel, mas "limpa". Quantas páginas de horroroso melodrama ele conseguiu cortar! Não quero dar spoilers sobre o livro, mas ele também tomou uma decisão muito inteligente com respeito ao início da história e ao personagem do Michael Fassbender. Então o que eu posso seguramente afirmar é que foi uma decisão muito inteligente. Aplaudo!

 

A Fotografia do Adam Arkapaw ("True Detective", "Macbeth") é indiscutivelmente belíssima, mas está bem longe de entrar entre as 5 indicadas. Um dia a primeira indicação dele virá, quando ele estiver em um filme maior e mais bem criticado. A trilha Sonora do Alexandre Desplat é a segunda melhor do ano, até agora pra mim. Tem um piano muito delicado, romântico, que é elemento da história, e que combinou demais com o filme. No momento, é onde o filme pode chegar (já que sempre o indicam, já que é bastante bonita, já que o ano está fraco nesta categoria). O francês tem, como sempre, vários cavalos na corrida,  mas as mais comentadas são esta trilha e a de "Florence Foster Jenkins" - que é um filme com muito mais respaldo.

 

Os atores todos estão ótimos. É uma pena que o filme tenha desandado como aposta de Oscar. E desandou porque é um melodrama clássico, bastante previsível, e não é isso que as pessoas querem ver, até por quê todo mundo já viu essa história. Menos passada em um farol da Austrália! Agora, sim, pode-se dizer que todo mundo já viu essa história em todos os lugares do planeta Terra. Só volto a dizer: são problemas originais do livro!  Não é por que o filme é ruim. Derek Cianfrance fez o máximo que poderia.
