Members felipef
Nolan: "The cast has been truly wonderful. And it's nice to be able to say that without lying," he said, laughing. "Really, a wonderful bunch of individuals. And I think because it's such a large cast, there isn't a huge weight on anyone, really, except Christian Bale, and he's marvelous. He's incredible to work with." "It's really been a joy. It's been a huge relief to me, actually. Because you never quite know as you cast. You cast people whose work you admire. You never really know how it's going to work out personality-wise. But it's such a good bunch." "And it's allowed me to concentrate on the scale of the film and all the things I have to tackle. When you do a film this size, you don't have the opportunity to get as wrapped up in the characterization with the actors as you do. You have to balance it with all of the other things." http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0505/30/index.htm felipef38503.8826736111
Members O_Imperador
Um pequeno artigo do Box-office Batman Begins Box Office Analysis By: Arsalan Ahmed Wow! It's been about 5 months since I wrote my original box office analysis for “Batman Begins.” Back then, the need to write that article emerged from my fanboy obsession with the character. Since then, box office analysis for various movies has become a regular column here at WoKJ , with some predictions going ashtray while some nailing it. About a month ago, I revisited the original article and found myself either disagreeing with a few analyses that I had done or realized that I made reached certain conclusions too early. In light of this, I have decided once again to revisit “Batman Begins.” Knowledge of certain factors such as marketing, release date changes, public perception and a projection of the quality of the film cannot be studied 6 months prior to a movie coming out. These factors will be taken into account this time round and a few more points of interest will be addressed. If you had the chance to read the original article, I apologize beforehand for the unavoidable repetition this analysis may suffer from. Summer The summer months work for and against a movie. Certain movies make a killing in the box office while others collapse under the competition. The general trend over the last few years points towards the highest box office receipts belonging to a movie being released in May. May is the start of Summer , and most people are starved for the popcorn or big budget flicks. Revenge of the Sith is already looking towards being the biggest movie of the summer and at the rate it's bringing in the money, there are a only a select number of movies that even stand a chance of challenging it for the top spot. So where does this leave June and July? June and July solidify the fact that a potential blockbuster movie will make a lot of money, or at least, increases its chances. But the chances of grossing as much as the best May movies go down significantly for multiple reasons. People have spent some cash already in May; more movies are out and hence more competition. There is also competition for the number of screens available. While “Batman Begins” may be able to capture 4000 theatres, it will have a much harder time controlling the number of screens at the theatre, against let's say, a May movie or a sure winner (like “Harry Potter” or “Spiderman 2”). “Batman Begins” on the other hand has a bit of luck on its side. By the time the caped crusader returns to the big screen, “Revenge of the Sith ” should be in it's 4 th week of release. During these 4 weeks, Batman does not face any direct competition, with only” Mr. and Mrs. Smith” around to provide somewhat of a dent to its opening weekend if the Angelina Jolie box office curse is broken. Capitalizing on this situation, Warner moved the release up by 2 days, thus allowing the movie to enjoy a 5 day opening, the effects of which will be discussed shortly. ‘Batman Begins' also faces no direct competition for the next 2 weeks till the release of War of the Worlds. This translates to ‘Batman Begins' having the opportunity to maximize its returns it's returns during the first 2 weeks due to the lack of any real competition. Box office effect: Positive Batman's Frontloaded History Burton 's 1989 “Batman” had a multiplier of 6.2. Most movies today would dream of multipliers such as this but back in the day, movies usually saw a multiplier that was much higher. “Batman Returns” managed a multiplier of 3.66, horrendous when compared to the movies of its era. “Batman Forever” fared no better whereas “Batman and Robin” experienced a dismal multiplier of less than 3, which was unheard of back then. Batman has a history with frontloading and this is not going to change anytime soon. Today, a respectable multiplier ranges between 3.0 and 4.0. Things are a little complicated this time round as Begins is a Wednesday opener. Needless to say though, “Batman Begins” should see the majority of its gross taking place early; I would go as far as to say very early as opposed to later. In my previous article, I had hinted that I saw this as a negative thing. But if we look closely once again at it's release date, we will notice that this bodes well for the dark knight. If Batman is to make most of its money early on, it is best that it faces as little competition as possible. Look back at the previous section. ‘Begins' is pretty much unchallenged barring some surprise. Box office effect: Positive Batman and the General Film Going Audience If you're a bat-fan and you've sat down with people you know and shown them a Batman trailer or picture, raise your hand if at least one of them has uttered, “What have they done to the Batmobile ? It is supposed to be slick”. Better yet, how many times have you explained the premise of “Batman Begins “and have had a person comment, “But it's the Joker who killed his parents”. Tim Burton's movies left a lasting impression on many people. Batman, in the eyes of the general audience, lives in a gothic world, with stylish gadgets, over the top villains, and a history that may not provide the right glimpse into its real universe. What's even scarier is this: Batman owes much of its exposure to the 60s T.V. series. While a great series in its own rights, the Batman we know today isn't the same one we knew then. Joel Schumacher's films, as much as you dislike them, only solidifies in the minds of the people that maybe Batman is meant to be that wacky hero living in that wacky world with wacky villains. "Batman Begins" is a very different film from any past incarnations of the character exposed to mainstream audiences (The Animated Series does not count as it was not mainstream ). It departs from past interpretations of Batman's universe and has a more serious undertone. For the movie to be a success, audience must first accept the character and story portrayed on screen before liking and enjoying it. Box office effect: Negative Internet Buzz "Batman Begins" has the buzz. This movie has a whole lot of buzz, more than expected and thankfully, a very positive one. There are few movies one can think of that have consistently delivered a positive reaction amongst the internet crowd. The release of any new information regarding this project; be it a 10 second teaser or a some marketing gimmick in New York city, and the news is quickly plastered over various movie websites, and discussed actively in forums. With June fast approaching, articles are popping up all over the net, be it an interview or a journalist providing his or her own take on the movie. Box office effect: Positive Marketing outside of the Internet The original article had failed to take into account all the marketing that may take place after the day it was posted. Commercials have played on networks targeting men, billboards are popping up in various cities, but most importantly, Batman is being featured more and more in various magazines and entertainment shows. Having said that, I still think Warner could have done a better job. I have been less than impressed with some of their marketing campaigns. Sometimes, when a trailer looks great, it seems to play with movies bound to under perform; when the perfect spot for placing a billboard is picked, the most horrendous picture from the entire production makes its way there. I'm glad to see that Batman's final trailer was finally attached to a big opener like Episode 3 and that the television marketing is becoming somewhat aggressive. Good or bad, every bit of marketing helps spread awareness. But the "Batman Begins" marketing isn't anything special. At the most, Warner has ensured awareness and has not undermarketed the movie. Box Office Effect: Not much. The only positive spin here is that one can not complain that it was not marketed well. Accessibility This is a two edged sword for "Batman Begins." From all the advertising, interviews and articles available, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Begins most probably will not play out like other comic book movies. "Batman Begins" will be much darker than previous installments, and seems to be focused on getting the Batman universe right. This is of course, music to the ears of a fan. What more can a person want than a true adaptation of a beloved character? 'Begins' is looking to be an intelligent adaptation - focusing on character and story development instead of just focusing on the action. But this is not like the intelligent adaptation that "Spider-man" was. 'Begins' seems to have an air of maturity about it. While "Spider-man" was fun, and something the younglings in the audience could easily relate to, 'Begins' seems like it will play out more like a mature adult drama. Spider-Man is easier to relate to. By just looking at the powers and the feats of Peter Parker and even the X-Men, it is not difficult for a kid to identify him to be a superhero. Also, even though they carry a mature theme, the plot and the story are played out in a simplistic manner. Begins is unlike these movies. As mentioned before, it's more like an adult drama, presenting philosophies and teachings and looking furthur into the minds of the characters to understand their actions. "Batman Begins" is essentially alienating the younger audience, who do not have the attention span for something of this sort. So while the quality of the movie soars, the box office is affected negatively. But kids are not the only one being alienated here. I got a bit of heat last time when I compared this movie to "The Hulk." I will still maintain that there are similarities though I see less of them as time goes by. Nevertheless, while "X-Men" had its never ending action and simplistic story line and "Spider-man" has its light heartedness, both "Hulk" and "Begins" are more serious (YES! There ARE some one-liners in "Batman Begins," but I'm talking about the general tone of the movie). As we all know, summer brings in the popcorn crowd and it's not very smart to alienate them either. One may argue that Matrix Reloaded was just a bad movie, but its bad multiplier was more a result of the time it spend philosophizing instead of providing intelligent entertainment like its predecessor. "Batman Begins" as a movie does not seem to concern itself with satisfying all the markets. This is a good thing as far as fans like you and me are concerned. Box office wise, though, I smell a little trouble. Box office effect: Negative The Cast "Batman Begins" has a wonderful cast and a wonderful cast does not work against a movie's favor. But that's the only real importance of it. A good cast in comic book movies only ensures that people do not dismiss it for something low budget or for a movie that may be plagued with bad acting. As such, the effect really cannot be considered positive. One can only say that it creates an absence of a negative buzz. Box office effect: Nothing special. Comic Book Movie Overload Three months ago, most people would have said that there are too many comic book movies out there. It is true. What is even more prevalent is how disappointing their box office has been. Other than the "X-Men" series and "Spider-man," none of the movies have performed particularly well till very recently. " Constantine " and " Sin City " did well at the box office compared to their budget and their expectations. But both also had the advantage of not being marketed as comic book movies. Marvel and DC are both announcing numerous comic book projects and this writer believes that they'll bring the death of comic book characters to the big screen. Begins is lucky to be released now and not in between the flood of heroes that will make their mark in the near future. Still, a comic book backlash has already started and Batman will find itself slightly affected by it. Box office effect: Slightly Negative Minor Tidbits: Positive effects: DC's Animation department The iconic status of Batman that extends beyond the comic universe The Return to good old fashion stunt work (meaning lack of CGI) Conclusion Instead of providing a clear cut prediction on Batman's opening weekend and total tally, I will attempt to provide a probability value for the different grosses that the movie can attain. ADOREI A PARTE DESTACADA!!!

Members O_Imperador
