Batman Begins: Comic Vs. Film How faithful is the new movie to the true Dark Knight? by Hilary Goldstein June 13, 2005 - Batman Begins is not the best comic-book movie ever made, because it is not a comic-book movie. Instead, director Christopher Nolan has created a movie that just happens to involve a guy dressing up like a giant bat. Previous Batman films were already created as a "comic book come to life." Tim Burton's two efforts, Batman and Batman Returns were dark, moody pieces, but completely unrealistic. After all, it's just a comic book, right? Fortunately for fans, Nolan and writer David Goyer saw it differently. The Batman mythos is greater than your standard four-color comic. And so this dynamic duo created a real film, a substantial film, a film with weight and depth and purpose. They created a great movie that just happens to be based on a comic book. Our purpose here, however, is not to discuss the greatness of Batman Begins. A full review can be found over at IGN FilmForce. Instead, we've going to examine how Batman Begins stacks up against the comics. Don't worry, we won't be spoiling the movie for you. But if you're curious how the new Batman flick compares to comic-book epics such as Batman: Year One, read on. Gotham As we saw in Burton's films, the portrayal of Gotham is often directly related to the overall take on Batman. Burton's Gotham was like a twisted nightmare come to life. It was surreal -- beautiful to look at, but not an actual city. The Gotham City of Batman Begins, which was filmed largely in Chicago, is a sprawling Metropolis. It looks like a real city, in part, because it is a real city. The altered Chicago is made to look like a vast metropolis, too big for its own good. So large, in fact, that it feels inescapable. Connecting the sprawling city is a commuter rail built by Bruce Wayne's father just short of his murder. It's one of the few noticeable CG images in the film, but the train plays a vital role. Gotham is vibrant and its demise into poverty is explained in the film. This isn't just a version of New York gone bad, Gotham is a city that has been bludgeoned by corruption and crippled by an insidious economical plague. This is a city that has lost the war to save itself. What hope does Batman have? A Death in the Family Traditionally, eight-year-old Bruce Wayne's parents are murdered after watching The Mark of Zorro. However, that movie and that notion is a little outdated. Nolan and crew have made some minor changes that better connect Bruce's sense of guilt over the death of his mother and father. This twist is better than the accepted origin, so score one for Batman Begins. Origin Batman Begins maintains much of Batman's origins from Year One and other Dark Knight books. However, there are some notable changes. When we first meet Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), he is lost. He is not on a crusade to avenge his parents, to learn everything he can so he can become a dark angel of justice. He doesn't have any desire to put on a mask -- he only has his anger and his guilt and it is destroying him. Bruce has indeed wandered the world and had some training. However, that singular purpose often shown in the comics is not evident at first. He is merely rage without direction. It is Ducard (Liam Neeson), who finds Wayne and gives him the training and guidance he needs to get on the proper path. It should be noted that Ducard is never referred to by his first name Henri, nor does he bear a French accent (thankfully). Ducard is part of Ra's Al Ghul's (Ken Watanabe) League of Shadows (in the comics it's League of Assassins), who claim to be an international group dedicated to justice. Suffice it to say, things don't go well in the end and Bruce parts company with the League. On his return to Gotham, Bruce has found himself and realizes what he must do. Most of the Batman comics offer little true motivation for Bruce becoming Batman. They say, merely, that he witnessed his parents murder and swore to avenge them by cleaning up Gotham. Batman Begins takes this further. It gives a real sense of who Bruce Wayne is and why he must fight criminals. Further, it shows the moment when Bruce gains understanding that he cannot fight crime just as a man, that he must become a symbol, a myth, a legend. Allies Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine) is portrayed in the comics as Bruce's confidant and caretaker. He trades barbs with Bruce, but always backs his play. So to is it in Batman Begins, only Alfred has more depth to his character. He's deeply concerned with maintaining the Wayne legacy and provides some valuable consultation to Bruce. In fact, it's Alfred that continues to press Bruce to have two masks -- one as The Batman and one as the billionaire playboy. Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) has quite a different role than in the comics. The man from the comics once ran Wayne Enterprises, but this Fox has been relegated to safeguarding defunct technology. He becomes Wayne's other confidant and tech-savvy supplier. Gordon (Gary Oldman) begins Begins as Sgt. Gordon. He's almost completely unchanged from the comics. His Chicago brogue is handled beautifully by Oldman, his tentative trust of Batman is equally perfect. The two share an uneasy alliance, but Begins also offers a look at how these two men first hook up and see their bond strengthen over the course of the film. Lastly, there is Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes), who is new and has never been a part of the comics. Dawes is Bruce's childhood sweetheart who's now become an assistant to the District Attorney (not named Harvey Dent). She plays a necessary role, one that has more significance to the plot than say, Vicki Vale (Kim Bassinger) from the 1989 Batman. Villains The main piece of advice from just about everyone who saw Joel Schumacher's terrible take on the Dark Knight in Batman & Robin was to focus on a single villain. Nolan has ignored this advice. He focuses on no villains -- the focus is all on Batman. However, there are more villains in Batman Begins than any Batman film since the camp '60s flick. Yet it works, because this is a story about The Batman and none of the villains comes close to overshadowing the bat. While the Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) remains largely identical to his comic-book counterpart, don't expect the same of Ra's Al Ghul. There is no daughter Talia nor a Lazarus Pit even mentioned in the movie. If it helps ease your pain at all, he does have a rather ingenious plot to destroy all of Gotham. As for the other villains in Begins? Let's just say there are several surprises that will please comics fans. Fights Remember how stiff Batman was in those other films? Guess what -- he can finally move his neck! The battles in Batman Begins are frenetic, fast and almost impossible to see clearly. Batman's first real conflict is as grand as any fight from a comic. He rattles his enemies, who hear him coming from multiple angles, spot shadows flittering across the walls and sense his presence as a monster come to destroy evil. Rather than your standard kung-fu beatings, the Batman battles stay true to the comics. Bats doesn't just go toe-to-toe with his enemies, he uses fear and trickery to keep his opponent's off-balance. Seeing this evolve, particularly in the first major conflict, is quite amazing. You know this is a man in a suit and yet he seems like a demon sent from Hell to reclaim the souls of the damned. Better than Year One Blasphemy? Let's be fair here. Year One is one of the greatest stories ever told, but it's only that is only four issues long, that is meant merely to re-establish the world of The Batman. Batman Begins has two-and-a-half hours to plunge into the depths of Bruce Wayne's psyche. No stone is left unturned in this film. Everything is explained. Why does Bruce Wayne choose to fight criminals? Why must he wear a costume? Why doesn't he believe in killing people? What happened to the man who killed his parents? What makes him take on the guise of a billionaire playboy? Why does Alfred help him at all? Why is Gotham so corrupt, so overrun with crime? Why are there so many crazy people in this city? All of these are answered and more. What is perhaps most exciting is that the last half hour of Batman Begins sets up the next two Batman films. It's not just a matter of who Batman will fight next, but the state of Gotham City. There are madmen everywhere, but there's a reason for it. There's some brilliant psychology at work in Batman Begins. The way Goyer and Nolan have crafted this tale, it becomes clear that there is no other possible path for Bruce Wayne other than as Batman. It's not just a conceit that he's going to wear a suit, you will actually understand why he must. Sure, it's not a 100% perfect and literal translation of the comic, but it doesn't have to be. Again, this is not a comic-book movie, just a movie that happens to be based on a comic book. Oh, and it's great.
