    Fiennes moved to supporting for 'The Reader'

    movie stars are fleeing the Best Actor race in droves these days. Now

    comes word that Ralph Fiennes' camp has decided to place him in the

    Best Supporting Actor category for The Reader. (Astute EW

    readers will notice that I put Fiennes in the lead-actor column in my

    Oscar Race feature in this week's issue, out today; I was merely

    following the Weinstein Co.'s directives, which apparently have been

    overruled.) Certainly the swap now means Fiennes has a better shot at

    scoring a nomination: He's said to be excellent in the film, but since

    he shares his role with newcomer David Kross, he probably lacks the

    sufficient screen time to make the Best Actor cut.

     

    But moving Fiennes out of lead for The Reader does have a few strange results. For starters, it pretty much renders his fine supporting performance in The Duchess

    (pictured above) obsolete as far as the Oscar season is concerned,

    since Academy rules dictate that actors may only receive one nomination

    per category. And with his costar Kate Winslet currently set to be

    campaigned as Best Supporting Actress for the film, the movie now has

    no lead-acting contenders at all. The Academy usually lets that fly for

    an ensemble film like Babel or Crash; will they accept it for a three-hander like The Reader?

     

    What do you all think of this? Is Fiennes shooting himself in the

    foot by competing against himself? Or is he making the smart move by

    banking on his Holocaust-themed movie for an Oscar nod?

    Pensei que DiCaprio tivesse sido promovido como coadjuvante. No meio da temporada de premiações (acho que já tinha sido indicado ao Globo de Ouro) tomaram essa decisão e ele acabou dividindo seus votos por Os infiltrados entre as duas categorias.

    Mesmo caso do Fiennes, concorrência muito pesada para ele ser indicado como protagonista. Fica como coadjuvante, como é tradição para os atores novatos (Tatum O'Neal, Timothy Hutton, Haley Joel Osment, Abigail Breslin), fazendo compania pro Dev Patel do Slumdog Millionaire.

     

    Não é como se a campanha de The Reader fizesse o menor sentido.

     

    A dúvida é: Kate Winslet no Globo de Ouro fica como? Indicada duas vezes como  principal como o DiCaprio anos atrás?

    Frost/Nixon About to Go Big Oscar

    Frost/Nixon is a good example of why the chattering class can

    sometimes be wrong.  We’ll have to see how it plays out as we still

    know nothing for certain.  But make no mistake about it: this is a Big

    Oscar Movie headed for the Kodak.  I am not sure if it’s on the stands

    yet but EW is about to go big with Frost/Nixon, naming it as one of the

    three sure Oscar bets for Best Picture, along with Benjamin Button and

    Doubt.  Two of these are way off early radars, as far as I can tell,

    and this based on early screenings of these films.  Frost/Nixon is

    going to have to bomb to not be one of the strongest contenders and you

    will likely see this play itself out in the next month.   EW’s Dave

    Karger has a strong track record in sussing out the Oscar contenders. 

    He is almost always at least three or four out of five right, even as

    early as November.  This issue, the first week of November, plays it

    safe-ish, meaning that three films are in the lead and the others are

    either long shots or possibles.  The Dark Knight is listed as a

    possible.  When you take into account the possibles and the long shots

    you have the same picture we’re all seeing.  What is remarkable about

    the EW thing is that Benjamin Button, Doubt and Frost/Nixon are out

    front. The point here being that it’s a clean slate, don’t listen to

    the blogs. Sorry blogs.

    Meanwhile, on his site, Dave Karger mentions that Ralph Fiennes is

    Pra quem achava que Frost/Nixon já era carta fora do baralho. Tenho impressão de que é o Michael Clayton desse ano, ninguém dá muito crédito mas ele segue firme rumo às indicações.

    Hummm. Australia e Revolutionary Road já tinham sido destacados pela EW na edição sobre os lançamentos do segundo semestre.

    Trailer bom o do The Reader. Winslet me parece melhor aqui do que em Revolutionary Road, se for indicada por esse como atriz principal (a classificação se é principal ou coadjuvante depende dos votantes mesmo) acho que teria mais chances de levar o Oscar.

     

    Já o cartaz é um lixo, a cabeça flutuante, e olha os nomes invertidos aí de novo! 06

    Kate tem uma coisa que Nic nunca terá: OUSADIA. Basta ver seus filmes... Em Iris por exemplo' date=' ela maior balofa nua nadando no lago. Ou então em Fogo Sagrado naquela cena em que ela mija pelada... Ou então ela de xana arreganhada parindo em Paixão Proibida... Ou então uma cena mais posuda, sendo desenhada pelo Jack Dawson... Fora sexo na maquina de lavar (Pecados Intimos), Sexo entre padre e difunta (Marques de Sade), Sexo com a melhor amiga (Almas Gemeas), Sexo com o monstro (Marrakesh). Poderia citar mais, mas deixo apenas esses exemplos de que Kate ousa... A unica ceninha onde a Nicole mostra alguns pelinhos foi no De Olhos Bem Fechados e olhe lá. Aff[/quote']

    Caindo não. Subindo.

     

     

     

    Semana passado entrou na previsão do Tapley, eventualmente aparece na previsão dos outros. Só uma questão de preferência, aqui no fórum apostam muito no Revolutionary Road, em outros lugares apostam em outros projetos. Isso é normal.

    Mas existem uma tendência em se privilegiar os filmes que ainda não foram lançados. Demora um tempo para um filme como Pequena Miss Sunshine ou Michael Clayton começar a ser levado a sério como um possível indicado ao Oscar no lugar de outros filmes lançados em Dezembro que as pessoas passaram o ano inteiro esperando.

     

     

     

    Por exemplo, independente de serem indicados ou não, The Dark Knight e Slumdog Millionairetêm sido encarados com desconfiança.

    Mas o buzz em cima da Scott-Thomas já é concreto, as próprias críticas já a exaltam como uma possível indicada ao Oscar. Eventualmente todas as cinco indicadas passarão por isso, mas ela está numa etapa diferente da campanha da Winslet e da Streep. Não é à tôa que o nome da Kristin Scott-Thomas surgiu como possibilidade quando saíram as primeiras críticas ao filme.

     

     

     

    Não tô dizendo hype como uma coisa necessariamente negativa. É como dizer que Benjamin Button é favorito se o filme ainda não foi lançado ou visto oficialmente (exibição-teste não vale), bacana, mas é hype.
