Bale digs spurs into 'Yuma' redo

By Borys Kit and Tatiana Siegel

Christian Bale is close to a deal to star opposite Russell Crowe in James Mangold's "3:10 to Yuma." Relativity Media is stepping in to finance the film, which has been without a home since Columbia Pictures put it into turnaround earlier this summer.

The move is certain to give Mangold a sigh of relief as the Western remake is taking a tortuous journey to the screen. Columbia spent four years developing the film, which it had hoped to start filming this summer.

Tom Cruise had been circling the film for his follow-up to "Mission: Impossible III," with Eric Bana rumored to be in pursuit of a role as well.

But by June, Cruise and Bana were no longer in the mix, and Columbia put "Yuma" in turnaround, leaving producer Cathy Konrad and Mangold to shop the project to various studios.

Fox 2000 was believed to be the front-runner based on Konrad and Mangold's relationship with topper Elizabeth Gabler, who championed their "Walk the Line."

Now, Relativity plans to finance the film, either in whole or in part, and is currently in negotiations with Columbia. Relativity has not yet lined up a distributor.

Relativity sees the movie as a one-off project, separate from its other business with Sony, Columbia's parent company. In May, Relativity sank $385 million into 11 Columbia films, a move that came on the heels of its investment of $400 million in January into the production costs of an additional 11 of the studio's films.

"Yuma" is based on the 1957 film that starred Glenn Ford as captured outlaw Ben Wade, who finds himself in the custody of small-time rancher Dan Evans. The rancher is secretly trying to take the outlaw to a railway station to catch a train to Yuma for the outlaw's court date. A battle of wills ensues.

Mangold's take sees Crowe as the outlaw and Bale as the rancher. Michael Brandt, Derek Haas and Stuart Beattie have all contributed to the screenplay.

The movie is on track for a fall shoot, after the Endeavor-repped Bale films "I'm Not There," Todd Haynes' fractured Bob Dylan biopic. After "Yuma," Bale, who has "The Prestige" opening Oct. 20, will then segue to his "Batman Begins" sequel, "The Dark Knight," which is scheduled to start shooting in late winter or spring.Sophie Aubrey2006-8-5 14:31:17

Paramount Asks You To "Stop Laughing"

Author: Garth Franklin

Paramount Pictures has apparently picked up the film rights to Jodee Blanco's 2003 memoir "Please Stop Laughing at Me".

A very painful memoir of how the author recounts being the target of school and street bullies in her youth, Aussie scribe Stuart Beattie ("Collateral") has been tipped to adapt Blanco's memoir as a potential directing vehicle for Sam Mendes.

Beattie is in Australia with director James Mangold prepping for his new production, the $45 million remake of "3:10 to Yuma" set for a November start. 20th Century Fox will distribute that film

Lionsgate to distrib 'Yuma'

Oater harvest at indie studio

By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

Lionsgate has boarded Russell Crowe starrer "3:10 to Yuma," pacting to distribute the oater in the U.S.

Christian Bale also has signed on to star in the pic, a remake of the 1957 Western toplining Glenn Ford. Pic is set to start lensing next month.

Lionsgate struck the high-profile deal with Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media, which decided to finance the $70 million film after Sony put the project into turnaround earlier in the summer, forcing helmer James Mangold and producing partner (and wife) Cathy Konrad to look elsewhere for coin.

Lionsgate will spend a minimum of $30 million on prints and advertising. Generally speaking, the indie studio only spends $15 million-$20 million on wide releases.

Studio execs said the decision to push the boundaries reflects the continued growth of Lionsgate, pointing to bigger-budget pics like "Crank" and "Rogue," as well as to the studio's first-ever Oscar win for best pic, "Crash".

Stuart Beattie, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas penned the script for "Yuma." Storyline revolves around a desperado who is caught by a sheriff determined to bring the outlaw in. Sheriff's plans go awry when the desperado's accomplices stage an ambush.

Pic, Mangold and Konrad's follow-up to "Walk the Line," originally attracted the attention of Tom Cruise. Crowe stepped up after falling out of Baz Luhrmann's next film.

Lionsgate also has bought distrib rights in several key foreign territories, including the U.K. and Germany, as well as domestic home entertainment rights. This is sure to rankle home entertainment company Image Entertainment, which recently inked an output deal with Relativity. Lionsgate has been trying to buy Image for more than a year, and is now waging a fight to replace the entire board at the company's annual meeting next month.

Crowe's "Yuma" remake finds a studio

Sunday September 17 11:50 PM ET

Russell Crowe's remake of the old Western "3:10 to Yuma" finally has found a home.

Lionsgate has come aboard to distribute the film, which will begin shooting next month in New Mexico. Christian Bale also stars. James Mangold ("Walk the Line" directs.

With a budget of close to $80 million, "Yuma" is bigger than most films handled by Lionsgate, which is better known for such inexpensive hits as the "Saw" and "Madea" franchises.

"We are not abandoning the niche markets and the cost-efficient driven genre movie, but on occasion we are going to go beyond our reach," said Peter Block, president of acquisitions and co-productions. "This is a thoughtful and calculated step up."

The project originally spent four years in development at Columbia, which was planning to start shooting it this past summer. Tom Cruise had been circling the project for his follow-up to "Mission: Impossible III," with Eric Bana rumored to be in pursuit of a role as well.

But Columbia scrapped the project, and producer Cathy Konrad and Mangold, her husband, shopped the film to various studios. Last month, Relativity Media came aboard to finance the movie.

"Yuma" is based on the 1957 film that starred Glenn Ford as Ben Wade, an outlaw who finds himself in the custody of small-time rancher Dan Evans. The rancher is secretly trying to take Wade to a railway station to catch a train to Yuma for the outlaw's court date. A battle of wills ensues.

Mangold's take sees Crowe as the outlaw and Bale as the rancher. Alan Tudyk ("Serenity" has joined the cast as a doctor who helps the rancher get the outlaw on the train.

3:10 To Yuma Finds Serenity

By Josh Tyler: 2006-09-18

After a hellish pre-production process the James Mangold wester 3:10 to Yuma has finally found a home and a final cast.

The project is a remake of a 1957 Glenn Ford movie, which was itself based on a story by the much adapted Elmore Leonard. The 57 version follows a rancher named Dan Evans who is persuaded to escort a recently captured outlaw leader to the nearest train station where he'll be sent to Yuma for trial. The pair end up holed up in an old hotel and under siege. It actually sounds a lot like a cowboy version of 16 Blocks.

Mangold's new version has landed at Lionsgate after being dumped by Columbia Pictures. At one point Eric Bana and Tom Cruise were rumored to be in the running to star, but now Russell Crowe and Christian Bale are attached. Joining them is the geek-loved actor Alan Tudyk, who some might remember from Serenity but more probably remember as the pirate in Dodgeball.

I like the idea of Russell Crowe in a heavy-hitting, siege-western. Except for the great Costner movie Open Range a few years ago, the cowboy genre has been basically dead for awhile. If Costner couldn't bring it back, maybe Crowe can.

http://lionsgatepublicity.com/epk/310toyuma/docs/pronotes.doc

"Christian Bale (RESCUE DAWN, BATMAN BEGINS) portrays Dan Evans, the beaten-down rancher and Civil War veteran who rediscovers his sense of strength and moral purpose while fulfilling his pledge to take Wade to the train. As Mangold describes the reluctant hero, "Dan Evans is a man who is living life tied back, limping along trying to deal with the obstacles getting thrown at him. That made it interesting to cast someone with the kind of strength that Christian has. Christian has a kind of intensity and integrity that leaps out of his eyes. I think it makes for a really noble character, someone who you identify with."

Bale eagerly took on the role. "I like to read a lot of scripts, but very rarely does one really stick with you. And this one did. It was a great story and a classic morality tale, as most westerns really are." He was intrigued by the dynamic between Evans and Wade, who forge a singular friendship during their three-day journey. "There's a great battle of wills between the two, and a clash of philosophies; but there is an understanding and agreement about what society is. But they have absolute opposite approaches about how to deal with that society."

James Mangold Diz Por Escolheu Russell para Fazer Ben Wade

Na página de Notas de Produção do filme 3:10 To Yuma:

http://lionsgatepublicity.com/epk/310toyuma/docs/pronotes.doc
