The Fly Ultimate Collector's Edition (R2) in May

Fox Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Fly (Ultimate Collector’s Edition) for 29th May 2006 priced at £69.99. Released to mark the 20th Anniversary of David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of the classic horror this 7-disc limited edition and numbered box set includes brand new special editions of The Fly (1986) and The Fly II, alongside the original The Fly (1958) and The Return of the Fly PLUS the long awaited Curse of The Fly, previously unreleased on DVD until now.

The Fly Ultimate Collector’s Edition DVD Box Set includes:

The Fly (1958)
The original version of The Fly is renowned as the seminal monster movie of the 1950s starring classic horror star Vincent Price. Fanatical inventor Andre Delambre (David Hedison) becomes obsessed with his latest creation, a matter transporter. However, when testing the device on himself, a fly accidentally gets caught in the machine and the scientist and insect end up horrifically mutated with the head and arms of each other! Eventually, Andre’s wife Helene (Patricia Owens) discovers the secret and must kill the thing her husband has become, but can she do it?

The Return of the Fly
François Delambre (Vincent Price) returns in this sequel to help Andre’s son, Philippe (Brett Halsey) who naively continues his father's work exploring the forbidden science of transmigration, only to befall the same fate as him. Set fifteen years later, the story follows Philippe’s rampage as half-man, half-fly to seek revenge with his thousand eyes, killing anybody that stands in his way…

Curse of the Fly

The Delambre’s are back in this final instalment of the original trilogy. This time, three family descendents are still trying to perfect the transportation machine their elders failed to… However, things take a turn for the worse when one of the trio marries a woman who not only happens to be on the run from a local mental institution but whose meddling uncovers botched human experiments that have the whole family trying to escape… with disastrous consequences.

The Fly (1986) 20th Anniversary Special Edition

David Cronenberg’s acclaimed remake stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Fully restored to it’s gory glory, The Fly has been given the full Special Edition treatment on DVD to mark the film’s 20th Anniversary. The two disc set contains ear dropping, never-before-seen bonus material including an audio commentary by Cronenberg, a 3-part documentary ‘Fear of the Flesh’, featurettes, deleted scenes, branching clips, stills gallery and much more!

Scientist Dr Seth Brundle's (Goldblum) matter transportation project goes horribly wrong when he decides to use the ultimate guinea pig - HIMSELF! Unknown to Seth, he is not alone… A fly is caught in the pod when he tries his experiment and his human DNA is interwoven with that of the insect, insidiously transforming him into a super-agile, super-strong mutation. Seth's only true love, Veronica (Davis), watches helplessly as Seth mutates into a mere shadow of his former self, unable to control the urges and appetites that he now feels.

The Fly II Special Edition

A new generation of horror is born when Eric Stoltz stars as Martin Brundle, the son of the brilliant but unfortunate genius Dr Seth Brundle. Seth's matter transportation equipment has been taken over by Bartok Industries, hoping to harness the power of his invention. Martin, though only five years old, has already matured into a full grown man in the clinical environment of Bartok Industries. Unknowingly to him, the megalomaniac Bartok (Lee Richardson) plans for Martin to be a specimen in his research. But Martin has inherited more than just intelligence from his father. His insect blood begins to take control until he himself becomes a grotesque mutant. Like father, like son...

This Special Edition DVD contains two discs loaded with extra material including an audio commentary by Director Chris Walas and film historian/archivist Bob Burns, a documentary ‘Transformations: Looking Back at The Fly II’, alternate ending, a on video production journal, featurette, storyboards, stills gallery and much more!

Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Warner Bros. Pictures Tough Guys Collection for 18th July 2006. The follow up to their successful Gangster Collection, this Tough Guys Collection includes six new crime genre classics all making their DVD debuts. The titles include Bullets or Ballots, Each Dawn I Die, ‘G’ Men, San Quentin, A Slight Case of Murder and City for Conquest with the original prologue intact for the first time since the film was released.

The collection will be available for $59.92 SRP. Each title is also available separately for $19.97 SRP.

All

six titles have been fully restored and digitally remastered with

special features including historian commentaries and new making-of

featurettes. Each disc also contains an exclusive “Warner Night at the

Movies” segment which recreates moviegoer attractions such as

newsreels, comedy shorts, cartoons and trailers from the years each

film was released.

Major Hollywood studios in the ‘30s and

‘40s were each known for their distinctive styles (MGM for its

musicals; Universal for its horror films, etc.). Warner Bros. was best

known for firmly establishing the genre of gangster films, which were

also noted for their socially conscious themes as well as their simple

visual look (low key lighting and sparse sets).

Details of films in the Tough Guys Collection

Bullets or Ballots (1936)

When

Warner Bros.’ Depression-era gangster movies began to draw protests,

the studio reinvigorated the genre with stories emphasizing law

enforcers instead of lawbreakers. The swift, sturdy Bullets or Ballots

reflects that, with Edward G. Robinson (as Blake) siding with the good

guys for the first time in a gangland saga. Humphrey Bogart plays the

short-fused Fenner. And Joan Blondell and Louise Beavers, in an unusual

story element for the times, are thriving numbers operators whose grift

is usurped by the mob.

DVD special features include:

  • Warner Night at the Movies 1936 short subjects gallery:
    • Vintage newsreel
    • Vintage Short George Hall and His Orchestra
    • Classic cartoon I’m a Big Shot Now
    • Theatrical Trailer The Charge of the Light Brigade
  • New featurette Gangsters: The Immigrant’s Hero
  • Commentary by Dana Polan
  • How I Play Golf by Bobby Jones No. 10: Trouble Shots
  • Breakdowns of 1936 studio blooper reel
  • Audio-only bonus: 4/16/1939 Lux Radio Theater Broadcast with Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, Français & Español (feature film only)

Each Dawn I Die (1939)

Framed

for manslaughter after he breaks a story about city corruption,

reporter Frank Ross is sure he’ll prove his innocence and walk out of

prison a free man. But that’s not how the system works at Rocky Point

Penitentiary. There cellblock guards are vicious, the jute-mill labor

is endless and the powers Ross fought on the outside conspire to keep

him in. Two of the screen’s famed tough guys star in this prison movie

that casts a reform-minded eye on the brutalizing effects of life in

the slammer. James Cagney “hits a white-hot peak as [Ross,] the

embittered, stir-crazy fall guy” (Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide). And

George Raft (Cagney’s friend since their vaudeville days) portrays

racketeer hood Stacey, who may hold the key to springing Ross.

DVD special features include:

  • Warner Night at the Movies 1939 short subjects gallery:
    • Documentary Short A Day at Santa Anita
    • Oscar-Nominated classic cartoon Detouring America
    • Theatrical Trailer Wings of the Navy
  • New featurette Stool Pigeons and Pine Overcoats: The Language of Gangster Films
  • Commentary by film historian Haden Guest
  • Breakdowns of 1939: studio blooper reel
  • Bonus cartoon Each Dawn I Crow
  • 3/22/43 Lux Radio Theater Broadcast
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, Français & Español (feature film only)

‘G’ Men (1935)

In

1931, James Cagney helped jump-start the gangster genre as “The Public

Enemy.” In 1935, he wages on-screen war against the nation’s public

enemies. Outcries against movies that glorified underworld criminals

put Cagney on the side of the law in ‘G’ Men. Emphasis may have changed but elements are the same. ‘G’ Men

builds to a fury of bold escapes, siren-wailing pursuits and frenzied

shootouts. Here, a punchy hot-off-the-presses account of the pursuit

and capture of John Dillinger provides the story inspiration as

tough-guy Cagney gives it to ’em good in a movie that’s “fast, gutsy,

as simplistic and powerful as a tabloid headline”.

DVD special features include:

  • Warner Night at the Movies 1935 short subjects gallery:
    • Comedy short The Old Grey Mayor starring Bob Hope
    • Classic cartoon Buddy the Gee Man
    • Theatrical Trailer Devil Dogs of the Air
  • New featurette Morality and the Code: A How-to Manual for Hollywood
  • Commentary by Richard Jewell
  • How I Play Golf by Bobby Jones No. 11: Practice Shots
  • Things You Never See on the Screen: Breakdowns of 1935 studio blooper reel
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, Français & Español (feature film only)

San Quentin (1937)

Do

the crime, do the time. But what happens during the long years spent

behind the walls of San Quentin? The penitentiary’s new yard captain

wants to make those years a time of rehabilitation rather than

punishment. But not everyone’s buying it. Humphrey Bogart portrays Red,

continuing his climb to stardom in this brisk film that’s one of a

string of Depression-era works combining gangster-movie elements with a

Big House setting. Studio mainstay Pat O’Brien plays Steve Jameson,

whose carrot-and-stick reforms begin to change Red’s thinking. An

inmates’ strike and a scripture-quoting con who swipes a rifle are

among the troubles Jameson faces. And Red is another as he reverts to

his old ways and makes a violent break for freedom.

DVD special features include:

  • Warner Night at the Movies 1937 short subjects gallery:
    • Vintage newsreel
    • Oscar-nominated Broadway Brevity short The Man Without a Country
    • Classic Cartoon Porky’s Double Trouble
    • Kid Galahad Theatrical Trailer
  • New featurette Welcome to the Big House
  • Commentary by Patricia King Hanson
  • Breakdowns of 1937 studio blooper reel
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, Français & Español (feature film only)

A Slight Case of Murder (1937)

Prohibition’s

ban on booze is over, and that means bootlegger Remy Marco must make

some changes. Don’t call his beer-peddling enterprise a racket. It’s

now a business. Employees are no longer lugs or palookas, they’re

associates. And don’t refer to Marco as da boss. Use sir. He’s gone

legit, see? Edward G. Robinson plays Marco, spoofing his Little Caesar

persona in a comedy spree based on Damon Runyon and Howard Lindsay’s

Broadway play. Lloyd Bacon, director of Robinson’s gangster sendups

Brother Orchid and Larceny, Inc., guides with screwball flair as

corpses, creditors, the swellest of swells and more mayhem descend on

Marco.

DVD special features include:

  • Warner Night at the Movies 1938 short subjects gallery:
    • Vintage newsreel
    • Oscar-nominated drama short Declaration of Independence
    • Classic cartoon The Night Watchman
    • The Dawn Patrol Theatrical Trailer
  • New featurette Prohibition Opens the Floodgates
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, Français & Español (feature film only)

City for Conquest (1940)

This

heart-tugging melodrama has been restored to its original running time,

with its prologue intact for the very first time since the original

1940 theatrical release. Subsequent theatrical reissues, TV and home

video versions have always been edited.

The movie’s story involves

ex-Golden Gloves fighter Danny Kenny, who has it all worked out. He’ll

turn pro to bankroll his brother’s dream of writing a symphonic paean

to the teeming city where they both live: New York. But life pulls the

sidewalk out from under Danny when he’s blinded during a brutal

15-round welterweight title bout. James Cagney stars as Danny, along

with co-stars Ann Sheridan, Anthony Quinn, film-debuting Arthur Kennedy

and, in a rare acting turn before his directing career, Elia Kazan.

DVD special features include:

  • Warner Night at the Movies 1940 short subjects gallery:
    • Vintage Newsreel
    • Oscar-Nominated short Service with the Colors
    • Classic cartoon Stage Fright
    • Theatrical Trailer The Fighting 69th
  • New featurette Molls and Dolls: The Women of Gangster Films
  • Breakdowns of 1940 studio blooper reel
  • Audio-only bonus: 2/9/1942 Lux Radio Theater Broadcast
  • Commentary by Richard Schickel
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, Français & Español (feature film only)

Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Film Noir Classic Collection Volume 3

for 18th July 2006. The third time’s the charm when Hollywood’s

legendary tough guys and femme fatales collide once again in Warner’s

third Film Noir collection. This time around we get five smoldering

suspense thriller classics, all new to DVD: Border Incident, His Kind of Woman, Lady in the Lake, On Dangerous Ground and The Racket. In addition, available exclusively with the set, will be a bonus documentary -- Film Noir: Bringing Darkness to Light

-- a vital companion piece that contains an elucidating overview,

complete with clips and expert commentary. The six disc collection will

be sold as a set only, for $49.92 SRP.

The movies star film

noir icons Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, Robert Ryan, Ricardo Montalban

and Ida Lupino, among others, and feature brand new commentaries from

film historians.

About The Film Noir Classic Collection Volume Three

Border Incident (1949)

This

steely thriller stars Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy as agents

from each side of the Mexico-California border. Their job: catch the

thieves, murderers and moneymen who prey on illegal aliens desperate to

make a few American dollars sweating as farm laborers. Anthony Mann

(Winchester ’73, The Naked Spur) directs, turning his lens to the

beauty and the terror of stark desert wastelands. Blending classic film

noir with a surprisingly contemporary plot, Border Incident is a relentless, cutting-edge gem of the genre.

DVD special features include:

  • Commentary by film historian Dana Polan
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Subtitles: English, French & Spanish

His Kind of Woman (1951)

His Kind of Woman

is a film-noir fan’s kind of movie: dark, sassy, surprise-filled.

Robert Mitchum plays Milner, who finds the romantic stakes raised when

he meets a self-proclaimed heiress (Jane Russell, in the role that

launched her devoted friendship with Mitchum). The mystery is twisted,

the sets are astonishing, the cast is large and talented. But what

makes this cult favorite stand apart is Vincent Price’s hilarious turn

as a self-absorbed, gun-collecting Hollywood star. Mitch gets the girl.

But Price steals the movie.

DVD special features include:

  • Commentary by film historian Vivian Sobchack
  • Subtitles: English, French & Spanish (feature film only)

Lady in the Lake (1946)

Robert

Montgomery stars in and directs this snappy adaptation of Raymond

Chandler’s hardboiled detective mystery. Montgomery portrays Marlowe,

private eye. As director, he’s also the film’s private eyes, using a

subjective camera presenting the action from Marlowe’s point of view.

The case begins when Marlowe sets out to find the missing wife of a

publishing magnate. Several smack-arounds, one dead gigolo, a few angry

cops, a booze-soaked frame-up and one dame in the lake later, Marlowe

finds the killer…and finds he’s looking at the business end of a gun.

DVD special features include:

  • Commentary by film historians Alain Silver and James Ursini
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, French & Spanish (feature film only)

On Dangerous Ground (1952)

Jim

has seen it all on the city’s shadowy streets: killers, thugs, pimps,

sadists. And the experience has cost him his soul. Ironically, his

redemption may come in his next case, a brutal murder that brings him

into the open sky and white light of the countryside…and into the arms

of a beautiful blind woman.

Directed with intensity by

Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause, They Live by Night) and featuring

a haunting score by Bernard Herrmann (Psycho), On Dangerous Ground

is a taut, rapid-paced manhunt with two fine stars at its tortured

heart. Noir master Robert Ryan captures Jim’s agonized self-hatred. And

Ida Lupino burnishes the screen as the sightless angel whose compassion

gives him one last chance at life.

DVD special features include:

  • Commentary by film historian Glenn Erickson
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, French & Spanish (feature film only)

The Racket (1951)

Nick

Scanlon (Robert Ryan) is an old-fashioned kind of gangster. If someone

crosses you, settle it with a fist or a bullet. Tom McQuigg (Robert

Mitchum) is an old-fashioned kind of cop. Grab the bad guy, not the

bribe. But they’re both living in a corrupt new world of smooth

operators on both sides of the law, efficient green-eyeshade types who

run a crime ring like a corporation. They won’t mind if Scanlon and

McQuigg square off… if they bring each other down.

Ryan and

Mitchum, who co-starred in the groundbreaking Crossfire (part of

Warner’s Film Noir Classic Collection Volume 2) reteam for another

tense, character-driven, twist-laden film noir.

DVD special features include:

  • Commentary by film historian Eddie Mueller
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Subtitles: English, French & Spanish (feature film only)

Bonus Disc (exclusive to the set)

  • Documentary: Film Noir: Bringing Darkness to Light
  • Vintage Shorts
    • Women in Hiding
    • You, the People

IGN's Top 25 Most Wanted DVDs

We pick a collection of classics that deserve deluxe treatment on DVD, but haven't yet received their due.

April 19, 2006 - A recent thread on IGN DVD's General Message Board asked the question, 'what DVDs need an update?' My first thought, despite a preponderance of evidence for such titles as Blade Runner, L.A. Confidential and others, was Raising Arizona,

if for no other reason than the magnificence of Nicolas Cage's H.I.

McDonough hair. But the question soon began a lively debate amongst

IGN's many cinephiles and collectors, producing an expansive list that

included everything from F.W. Murnau's Sunrise to Brendan Fraser's George of the Jungle.

Using a secret and highly technical method to determine each film's

relative appeal to IGN staffers and the moviegoing public, we have

compiled what we hope is a good cross section of the most wanted movies

yet to make it onto DVD, or worse yet, have already shown up in

less-than-stellar form. (Lost Highway was unfortunately edged

out at the last minute after an intensely-scrutinized recount - damn

butterfly ballots - but rest assured it's on the list in our hearts.)

While there was certainly no dearth of worthy candidates, we limited

our list to 25 titles, which we hope you will agree with. (Also,

starting letter-writing and online campaigns on each film's behalf

would be nice.)

Presented in descending order, here is IGN's Top 25 Most Wanted DVD List:

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419052322723-000.jpg pixy.gif
25. Darkman - Sam Raimi's first post-Evil Dead

effort still ranks as one of my all-time favorite films, and it's a

crying shame that the director hasn't ever offered its devotees a

proper release. On our wish list for the extras slate: commentary by

Raimi and actor Liam Neeson; commentary by cinematographer Bill Pope,

who went on to shoot the Matrix Trilogy as well as both Spider-Man films; a making-of documentary hosted by Bruce Campbell.

24. Beetlejuice - Tim Burton's follow-up to Pee Wee's Big Adventure is as much a bizarre blast as its predecessor, which begs the question why he (much less Warner Brothers)

hasn't yet found time to give this film its proper due on DVD. Wish

list extras: commentary by Burton and Winona Ryder; commentary by

Michael Keaton; commentary by Alec Baldwin; a making-of documentary

hosted by Otto (Glenn Shaddix).

23. A Fistful of Dollars/ For a Few Dollars More - These Sergio

Leone movies are desperately overdue for a great, elaborate remastering

job and re-release. Extras wish list: remastered anamorphic widescreen

presentation; commentary by film historians and experts; making-of

documentaries featuring interviews with cast and crew; discussion of Fistful as a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo; music featurette about Ennio Morricone; deleted scenes; advertising and artwork.

22. Last Tango in Paris - Bernardo Bertolucci's entire filmography is long overdue for elaborate, extras-laden treatment on DVD,

but this film in particular got the short shrift when MGM initially

released it in 1999. Wish list extras: rematered anamorphic

presentation; commentary by Bertolucci and actress Maria Schneider;

commentary by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro; a retrospective

documentary about the film's significance and impact in worldwide

culture; a retrospective documentary about Marlon Brando's

contributions to the film.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419052443951-000.jpg pixy.gif
21. Sex, Lies, and Videotape

- appearing at the dawn of the current independent film movement, this

searing drama deserves more than the bare-bones disc that is currently

available. (It would also provide a great double feature if paired with

Last Tango.) The original version offered an audio commentary by

Soderbergh. Our extras wish list for the Special Edition: retrospective

making-of documentary; a documentary about Soderbergh's Sundance

Audience Award win and subsequent impact on the fact of "independent

cinema."

20. The Wizard - A perennial favorite amongst IGN staffers and

video game fans everywhere, this 1989 adventure-cum-commercial for

Nintendo has thus far only been available in Germany in a full frame

edition under the moniker Joy Stick Heroes. Extras wish list:

commentary by Fred Savage, Christian Slater, and Beau Bridges; a

making-of documentary with plenty of cross-promotional material about

the Power Glove (and, for the hell of it, Gamecube's Revolution

Controller); a free plug-and-play copy of Super Mario 3.

19. The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) - Orson Welles' only film argued to surpass the achievement of Citizen Kane has long languished without a proper DVD release; with the recent (and hopefully forthcoming) success of Criterion versions of F For Fake and Mr. Arkadin,

we can only hope that the third time will be the charm in coming

months. Extras wish list: restored and remastered version of the

theatrical release; a restored version of the film according to Welles'

original script, including some 30 minutes or so of never-before-seen

footage; commentary by film historians, Welles biographers and other

experts; a documentary about the troubled history of this film, leading

up to its restoration; a documentary about Welles entitled "Troubled

Genius;" a copy of the Booth Tarkington novel accompanied by Welles'

screenplay.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419052312224-000.jpg pixy.gif
18. The Transformers: The Movie

- Another childhood favorite debuted on DVD several years ago only to

enjoy substandard treatment and zero extras. (Rumor has it that a

Region 2 version was assembled with restored picture and sound, but so

far it hasn't yet appeared stateside.) Extras wish list: restored

picture and sound, including Spike's controversial use of the word

'sh*t'; commentary by cast and crew, including Leonard Nimoy and Frank

Welker (the voice of Megatron); concept art; advertising and

commercials, including for the toys; music video for "The Touch;"

Easter Egg of Dirk Diggler singing "The Touch."

17. Cool Hand Luke - Paul Newman's 1967 film is nothing less

than an all-time cinematic classic, and its current bare-bones DVD is

an abomination. Extras wish list: commentary by Paul Newman (hurry up,

WB!); isolated score with commentary by composer Lalo Schifrin;

retrospective making-of documentary featuring interviews with Newman,

George Kennedy and Dennis Hopper. Preferred Title: Failure to Communicate Edition.

16. Harold and Maude - Hal Ashby is a filmmaker like

Bertolucci whose entire resume deserves deluxe treatment, but this film

in particular became a benchmark movie for the undesirables, outcasts

and misfits in moviegoing history. Extras wish list: commentary by Bud

Cort; isolated soundtrack featuring commentary by Cat Stevens;

retrospective documentary featuring interviews with Cort and period

footage of Ruth Gordon.

15. Days of Heaven - Particularly with the advent of HD DVD,

this film by Terrence Malick is one of the most beautiful and

bittersweet films ever produced. The previous version features a

remastered soundtrack. Our extras wish list: commentary by Malick

(yeah, right); commentary by Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard

and Linda Manz; retrospective featurette/documentary featuring

interviews with cast and crew; remastered anamorphic presentation.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419053335942-000.jpg pixy.gif
14. Chinatown - An unforgiveable oversight by Paramount, this film is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies

ever made, and deserves a DVD to match. Extras wish list: remastered

anamorphic widescreen presentation; commentary by Roman Polanski;

commentary by Robert Towne; commentary by Jack Nicholson and Faye

Dunaway; retrospective making-of documentary featuring interviews with

Nicholson, Dunaway, Polanski, Towne, and other members of the cast and

crew.

13. Grosse Pointe Blank - One of the many films to suffer from

Miramax's historical substandard DVD releases, this movie is just about

due for a 10th Anniversary Edition, perfectly keeping with its high

school reunion themes. Extras wish list: commentary by John Cusack and

Minnie Driver; commentary by Cusack and co-writers Steve Pink and D.V.

DeVincentis; commentary by Dan Ackroyd and Alan Arkin; retrospective

"10 years" documentary about the making of the film.

12. The Game

- David Fincher's unheralded masterpiece saw a Criterion laserdisc some

years ago but hasn't yet seen the same treatment on DVD. Extras wish

list: audio commentary by Fincher; commentary by Michael Douglas and

Sean Penn; commentary by screenwriters John Brancato and Michael

Ferris; alternate endings; making-of documentary; production footage and artwork; trailers and promotional materials; psychological test footage.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419052334269-000.jpg pixy.gif
11. Raising Arizona

- The Coen brothers' breakthrough comedy still remains one of the

greatest films never given its due on DVD. Extras wish list: commentary

by Joel and Ethan Coen; commentary by Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter;

scene-specific commentary by John Goodman and William Forsythe;

commentary by Randall 'Tex' Cobb; commentary by cinematographer Barry

Soinnenfeld; making-of documentary, behind-the-scenes footage.

10. True Lies - For a director who prides himself on documenting

every last advancement in the technological development of moviemaking,

the DVD currently in existence, well, it sucks. Extras wish list:

commentary by James Cameron; commentary by Arnold Schwarzenegger and

Jamie Lee Curtis; commentary by Tom Arnold; companion film The Kid & I;

uncut version of the film; a retrospective documentary about the making

of the film, including cast and crew interviews; featurettes about the

special effects and stunt work; a look at True Lies 2.

9. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut - despite their

reluctance to do so in the name of shilling their fans of a few extra

dollars, Trey parker and Matt Stone desperately need to Double Dip this

bad boy. Extras wish list: commentary by Parker and Stone; commentary

by Satan; commentary by Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman; deleted scenes

with optional commentary; music video of "What Would Brian Boitano

Do?"; footage of Parker and Stone at the Academy Awards, including

Robin Williams' performance of "Blame Canada;" other material too

offensive to describe here.

8. L.A. Confidential - This multiple Oscar nominee is available

in one of the saddest bare-bones DVD releases of all time. Extras wish

list: remastered anamorphic widescreen presentation; commentary by

Curtis Hanson; commentary by James Ellroy and screenwriter Brian

Helgeland; commentary by Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce;

retrospective making-of documentary covering all aspects of production

and including interview footage with cast and crew; production design

featurette with Jeannine Oppewall; "L.A. is the Fourth Man" featurette;

documentary on '50s Hollywood.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419052346752-000.jpg pixy.gif
7. Contact

- Robert Zemeckis' best film already saw a release with three

commentary tracks and some modest featurettes, but it needs nothing

less than a full remastering job to properly preserve the mature work

on screen. Extras wish list: a remastered anamorphic widescreen DVD;

all of the original commentary tracks; additional commentary special

effects featurettes; making-of documentary; concept art; teasers and

trailers.

6. Bonnie and Clyde - Arthur Penn's classic crime film has gone

unloved for far, far too long. Extras wish list: remastered anamorphic

widescreen presentation; commentary by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway;

retrospective making-of documentary featuring interviews with Dunaway,

Beatty, Michael Pollard, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons and Gene Wilder;

documentary about the film's editing featuring interviews with Dede

Allen; a retrospective featurette about the violence in the film and

its impact on culture then and now.

igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419054210808-000.jpg pixy.gif
5. Apocalypse Now/ Apocalypse Now Redux

- Coppola's crowing '70s achievement (and his last truly great film)

deserves no less than a three disc DVD release, including the following

features: fully remastered version of the theatrical cut, with

commentary by Coppola; fully remastered version of the Redux

cut with commentary by Coppola, commentary tracks by Martin Sheen;

retrospective documentary featuring interviews with Sheen, Coppola,

Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, Laurence Fishburne,

Dennis Hopper and Harrison Ford; remastered version of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse; deleted scenes; editing featurette with Walter Murch.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419054257414-000.jpg pixy.gif
4. Kill Bill

- No information is available yet about any forthcoming version of this

two-part film, despite an endless screaming of Tarantino fanboys

(including myself). Extras wish list: "The Whole Bloody Affair" Edition

with restored color footage of The Bride's battle with the Crazy 88's;

commentary by Tarantino; text commentary explaining references and

other trivia about the film; commentary by Thurman and David Carradine;

special effects and production featurettes; making-of documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew members; packaging that includes "bleeding."

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419054222917-000.jpg pixy.gif
3. Song of the South

- Disney's longtime "disgrace" film doesn't appear to be scheduled for

release any time in the near future, but it's a significant artistic

achievement whose place in history, for better or worse, should be

acknowledged on DVD.

Extras wish list: restored anamorphic widescreen presentation;

commentary by film historians and experts; introduction by a film

historian and/or Disney expert; retrospective making-of documentary

featuring a look at its historical significance and controversy.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419054247430-000.jpg pixy.gif
2. Blade Runner

- Ridley Scott's magnum opus is a minor atrocity on DVD, and could

greatly benefit from a multi-disc special edition set. Extras wish

list: remastered anamorphic presentation of the theatrical and

director's cuts; remastered 7.1 DTS audio; commentary by Ridley Scott;

deleted scenes; feature-length retrospective making-of documentary

featuring interviews with cast and crew; production design featurette;

cinematography featurette; "updated film noir" featurette; concept art;

trailers and TV spots.

pixy.gif igns-top-25-most-wanted-dvds-20060419054608149-000.jpg pixy.gif
1. The Star Wars Trilogy - Not to be confused with the Star Wars Episodes IV-VI

set that was released in 2004, there is just about nothing on planet

earth that we'd like to see more than a properly restored version of

the original Star Wars trilogy, without any digital upgrades,

improvements, or changes. Extras wish list: an apology by George Lucas

for giving the middle finger to an entire generation of moviegoers who

grew up watching the original versions of these movies. (Oh, and the Christmas Special would be nice too.)

A pequena sereia:

Disney Home Video has released some early artwork for a two-disc special edition of The Little Mermaid,

which features the voice of Broadway star Jodi Benson. The set will be

available to own from the 3rd October, and should retail at around

$29.99. The film itself will receive an all-new digital restoration,

along with a  Disney Enhanced Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Extras are

expected to include deleted scenes, a "The Story Behind the Story"

featurette on Hans Christian Andersen, "The Making of The Little

Mermaid", an all-new music video, a sneak peek at The Little Mermaid

III, and much more. We'll bring you the full specs at a later date.

Stay tuned. For now though, here's some early package artwork. The

final version should be pretty much identical, but without the 'New

2-Disc DVD' and 'Limited Time Only' banners.

20. The Wizard

Ignoro.

19. Soberba

18. The Transformers: The Movie

Não assisti. Não me importo.

Tomara.

16. Ensina-me A Viver

5. Apocalypse Now/Apocalypse Now Redux

3. Song of the South

Nada a declarar.

2. Blade Runner

1. The Star Wars - Trilogia

Announced today by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Clint

Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Laurence Fishburne will provide their voice

and likeness in the upcoming video game based on the "Dirty Harry" film

franchise. Hackman will portray Police Supervisor Al Bressler and

Fishburne will play Reverend Carlton Clay opposite Eastwood as the

legendary character "Dirty Harry" Callahan in the game on next

generation consoles.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is currently overseeing development of the game

franchise, in partnership with Eastwood's Malpaso and The Tehama

Companies, with the two-time Academy Award® winning producer and

director consulting on key creative aspects of the game design.

Eastwood will also lend his voice and likeness to his renowned role of

police detective Harry Callahan.

In related news, Warner Home Video (WHV) will release the definitive "Dirty Harry Collection" in 2007 to coincide with the launch of the game.

For the DVD

release, all films from the celebrated franchise -- Dirty Harry, Magnum

Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool -- will be
