O Festival de Cannes abre hoje os braços para receber Pedro Almodóvar em competição.

Se não é a primeira vez que isso acontece --o cineasta disputou a Palma de Ouro e foi premiado como melhor diretor por "Tudo Sobre Minha Mãe" (1999)-- esta é a segunda parte de uma história que começou bem diferente.

Quando tentou lançar sua carreira em Cannes, Almodóvar teve o filme recusado pelo festival. A decisão é um dos poucos arrependimentos confessos na história do francês Gilles Jacob como diretor do mais prestigiado festival de cinema do mundo.

"Lamento não haver percebido suficientemente rápido a importância de Almodóvar", declarou Jacob, num mea-culpa.

Reencontro

Há muito tempo reconciliado com Cannes, Almodóvar traz para a disputa desta 59ª edição do festival a história de outros reencontros. "Volver" (voltar), seu novo longa-metragem, já estreado em seu país, conquistou uma parcela do público espanhol que havia torcido o nariz para os últimos trabalhos do diretor.

Coincidência ou não, o filme é estrelado por Penélope Cruz, atriz-fetiche do cineasta, e por Carmem Maura, musa da primeira fase de sua obra, de quem ele se afastou em 1989, no auge do sucesso de "Mulheres à Beira de um Ataque de Nervos". Diretor e atriz não comentaram publicamente as razões de seu desentendimento. No entanto, Maura deixou claro que, com "Volver", ela retomou a parceria profissional com Almodóvar, não a amizade.

"O que me interessa em Pedro é o cineasta. Do resto, não quero saber nada, porque não sei se a pessoa que eu conheci ainda está lá", disse a atriz ao diário francês "Le Monde", que dedicou a capa de seu caderno especial sobre Cannes ao filme do espanhol.

Em "Volver", é a personagem de Maura que, depois de morta, retorna ao diálogo com sua família. Ela é mãe de Raimunda (Cruz), que por sua vez foi mãe aos 14 anos de idade, e de Sole.

Já adulta, Raimunda toca a vida de casada com um operário desempregado e lida com a filha adolescente. Sole é cabeleireira. Almodóvar está de novo às voltas com o universo das mulheres.

O segundo filme que estréia hoje na competição é "Fast Food Nation", do americano Richard Linklater ("Antes do Pôr-do-Sol"). A partir de um episódio de contaminação na carne do sanduíche-símbolo de uma rede de fast-food, Linklater fala de uma América em processo de apodrecimento. O filme foi aplaudido efusivamente na sessão para imprensa de ontem.

O dado curioso sobre o diretor norte-americano é que ele compete com dois filmes neste festival. Na mostra Um Certo Olhar, paralela à competição principal, Linklater assina "A Scanner Darkly", outra mirada sobre os EUA, desta vez com foco no tráfico de drogas e no terrorismo.

that is a happy segue to…

Volver is

Pedro Almodovar's latest joy to behold.

And part of that

joy is that, in the end, it is just a movie. This is not a case of damning

with faint praise. Volver and The Queen are both reminders

of just how starved we are for top quality filmmaking that is not made

with the awards season as its cause for existence.

Simply, Almodovar

is a great filmmaker and while he sometimes makes films that really

do change your perspective on film, what I love most about him is that

he really is out there just making movies. He sees the world through

eyes unlike anyone else's. He plays with genre and tradition and our

expectations. But in the end, we watch his movies with popcorn and soda

and a box of Jujubes like he probably dreamed of doing as a boy in the

rundown dark theater in Calzada de Calatrava and did in his 20s in Madrid.

Volver is

another Almodovar mix of street reality and magical thinking.

A movie almost exclusively in the world of women, it tells the story

of Rainmunda, a woman in a bad marriage with a beautiful young daughter,

a sister with a secret hairdressing business in her apartment, and a

still painful memory of the loss of her mother and father in a fire

years earlier that has left her enraged at her mother ever since. Things

take a turn for the weird when her aunt, who has long lost her mental

grip, passes away and the question of whether her "conversations"

with her dead sister are crazy or if the sister (Rainmunda's mom) is

really a ghost haunting all of their lives.

There is a lot more

than that… but to describe another inch of Almodovar's story

would be an act of cruelty. Almodovar works outside of the box

and each person should be allowed to discover the turns in that map

for themselves. But I will say this… the film is emotional, but

it is also fun, wild, busty (Mr. Cruz's push-up is on par with Ms. Roberts'

in Erin Brockovich), mournful, loving, and loaded with the brio

of life.

And Almodovar

continues to show more and more skill as a director. There are things

here he does with easy directorial confidence that are just great to

see… even if most audiences won't notice. He has the assurance

behind the camera that allows him to do things he needs to do, but without

ever falling into that trap of doing stuff just to prove he can.

Penelope Cruz,

being touted as an Oscar contender, does a terrific job here, going

through the wild ride with an assurance and ease that answers the question,

"Can she really act?" with an unqualified, "Yes."

And I suspect that this performance will change Hollywood's view of

Cruz. She is more than a pretty face. She can play Everywoman. And she

can deliver the full range of emotion.

She is perfectly

deserving of an Oscar nomination for her work here. I don't know that

it is a showy enough role to get Academy members to rethink her position

in the acting hierarchy. That is a challenge. It feels more like the

role that leads to a nomination for the next film. Wondrous groundwork

though.

Also delivering

big time in this film are the rest of the family… Carmen Maura,

Lola Duenas (who you'll recognize from her sensational turn in

The Sea Inside), Yohana Cobo as Rainmunda's daughter,

and Blanca Portillo.

Volver, in

the end, is really about the repeating circles of our lives and how

we get trapped inside of them and the challenges of escaping to a better

place. As much as it is a genre ghost movie and a thriller in a minor

key, it is a heart movie. And it is likely to take a small, easy place

in your heart, commanding, not demanding a space. A terrific original,

unexpected story so nicely told.

'Volver' Wins at San Sebastian

 

 

 

Pedro Almodovar's film Volver

will receive the Fipresci Grand Prix for Best Film of the Year at the

San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain. This will be

Almodovar's second Best Film of the Year win - his first was for Todo sobre mi madre (All About My Mother)

in the award's first year . Volver premiered in Spain on March 17th and

has been a smash hit with audiences and critics at the Cannes Film

Festival, France, where all six actresses including Penelope Cruz won Best Actress prizes. Almodovar will collect his prize at the opening gala on September 21st.

Almodóvar acha que "Volver" não será indicado a mais categorias no Oscar

 

NOVA YORK, 4 out (AFP) - O cineasta espanhol Pedro Almodóvar disse nesta quarta-feira, em Nova York, que considera muito difícil que seu último filme, "Volver", concorra em mais categorias do Oscar que a de filme estrangeiro, apesar dos bons prognósticos.

"Certamente gosto de ler que Penélope (Cruz) é favorita a melhor atriz, ou (que a fita é o) roteiro, ou de (melhor) filme", disse Almodóvar durante entrevista coletiva no Festival de Cinema de Nova York, onde "Volver" foi apresentado como "filme central" do evento.

No entanto, "é muito difícil conseguir outras indicações, deve-se pensar que se trata dos prêmios da indústria americana e é um milagre conseguir outras indicações", afirmou.

Ao ser perguntado se estava nervoso por novamente participar da corrida do Oscar, o cineasta brincou, dizendo que se sente "gordo" e que terá que emagrecer antes de viajar a Los Angeles.

O filme será exibido no sábado durante a mostra na primeira grande oportunidade para assisti-lo nos Estados Unidos, onde estréia oficialmente no início de novembro.

"Volver" foi escolhido pela Academia de Cinema Espanhola para representar a Espanha na categoria de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro do Oscar.

Entre todos os candidatos apresentados por diferentes países, a Academia de Hollywood elegerá cinco filmes que competirão ao prêmio de melhor filme de fala não inglesa na 79ª edição do Oscar.

A Academia divulgará em 23 de janeiro de 2007 os filmes indicados ao Oscar, cuja cerimônia de entrega será celebrada em 25 de fevereiro em Los Angeles.

Exclusive Interview: Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz looks

radiant and relaxed, as we chat on the patio of Toronto's

Intercontinental Hotel. There seems to be a momentum building these

days for an actress who has had her share of ups and downs. But now

there's the dreaded Oscar buzz permeating through the industry for La

Cruz's performance in Pedro Almodóvar's satiric family comedy, Volver.

 

 

 

But the actress prefers to take a laid back, pragmatic approach to the

buzz surrounding her. "You can be flattered about it because that's

already an award, to get that kind of love from people from a movie

that they love so much - and for sure it doesn't happen in every movie,

because I've been on the other side too, you know," says Cruz,

laughingly.

 

 

 

In a career that includes over 30 films, the 32-year old admits that

she has "gotten some good reviews in my career and some bad ones, and I

know what it feels like being on both sides. This one is the most

extreme experience until now in a positive way, so you can look at it

for what it is and be flattered about it but you cannot expect

anything. I cannot assume that it's going to happen because then you

can be disappointed if it doesn't, so I don't want to think about it."

 

 

 

In Volver, Cruz plays Raimunda, a working class mother of a precocious

teenage daughter, who lives in a council apartment in the city with her

lazy husband. When her aunt dies, Raimunda returns for the funeral to

her native village in the country. There she joins her sister Sole

(Lola Duenas) for the mourning, and both of them are very disturbed to

hear gossip that their mother - presumed dead in a fire with her

husband some years ago - has recently been seen in the town.

 

 

 

Being a superstitious lot, Raimunda and her family put this down to a

ghostly apparition and return to their normal lives in the big city.

Soon her slovenly husband becomes too much to bear, and when an unusual

solution is found to this problem, Raimunda is off on her own, unique

adventure, eventually finding herself as the unlikely manager of a

neighbouring restaurant, coping with a cancer-stricken friend, as well

as her ditzy sister who may or may not still be seeing apparitions of

their deceased mother. All of this comes on top of Raimunda's own, dark

secret.

 

 

 

Cruz, who established herself in Hollywood for a disparate array of

films that garnered mixed responses, said that while it was a release

to work again in her own language, Spain has always remained her home,

despite the media-obsessed relationships she had with Tom Cruise and

Mathew McConaughey. "In terms of working in my country I never made the

decision of not working there and I never left Europe for America. So

I've been combining those things, working in four languages, trying to

create the career that I want to have, and trying to take advantage of

speaking those languages instead of looking at having an accent like a

big problem."

 

 

Ironically, in the case of Volver, Cruz may speak Spanish - but with a

regional accent. "We were working in Spanish but we still had to do all

the training with the accent, so there is always something, but I love

that. The more difficult the character is the more I love it, because

the more opportunities you have to get to do something."

 

 

The on-screen relationship and friendship between Cruz and Almodòvar

goes back to 1997's Live Flesh, with the pair re-teaming for 1999's All

About My Mother. It's a relationship that has given Cruz the

opportunity to show off what she is truly made of, so of course it is

no question that when the director calls her up for a new film, she

accepts without hesitation. "Even before reading it he knows that I

trust him completely, so I don't need to read it to say yes. However,

when I read it I was so happy that he was giving me that character and

I knew it was an amazing opportunity for my career." Cruz says that

this particular woman in Volver was important to her, because "I felt

like I knew women like that, and I love that she refuses to be a

victim, I love the dignity that Pedro gave her in the script, and I

just wanted to give her that."

 

 

In preparing to play one of the most complex and colourful female

characters of her career, Cruz also looks different, slightly more

buxom. "I only ate all that I wanted because I could not lose any

weight for the character. So I gained like 3 or 4 kilos, and we

rehearsed for three months, then there were a lot of hours of looking

at the dialogue and adapting all the characters - sometimes different

dialogue to each one of us. We would then do costume fittings like

months before we would shoot and start creating the look of each

character. I was also taking cooking lessons because I specifically

handle the food in the movie and he's very precise with those things.

He wants everything to be perfect, and I love that a director who is

that demanding."

 

 

Asked to what extent Almodovar has changed over the years, Cruz says

that "For me every film has been amazing and better and better every

time. It's been great and I know how generous he is, but it always

surprises me, when he does certain things. For instance, if something

is not working he will tell you the truth, and if something is working

he takes the time to call you home to tell you that he saw dailies and

how grateful he is about what you did. That always surprises me with

how busy he is on a set he takes time for those things."

 

 

While in her early Hollywood career, the still ravishingly beautiful

star was known for her looks, often dismissed, at least early on, as

another pretty face. But it seems that those days are well and truly

behind her. "I feel like I have played a few characters that have made

me able to demonstrate where I wanted to go as an actress." Cruz adds

that in the 35 movies she has done, ", even the ones that have not been

successful they have taught me something, and I feel grateful because

they help me stay in the game." For the actress, staying in that game

means "just keep going, and there are about 4 or 5 that have been

positive in terms of how they were perceived. But Volver has been the

most complete experience where it's been embraced by critics and

audiences alike."

 

 

Yet Cruz has no regrets about her Hollywood career which has certainly

had its fill of disappointments. "I think that would sound ungrateful

if I would say that somehow the work in America was less interesting

than my European work. I think I have worked with great people here

that have given me great opportunities, but it is so happens that the

character in Volver is more difficult and requires more. When the

character is more difficult you have more chances to prove what you can

do as an actor and you cannot do that by yourself, as you need the

trust of a person that writes that for you and gives that to you. But

here, I feel like I've worked with amazing people here like Cameron

Crowe, and Stephen Frears - people that I really respect and want to

keep working with, so I feel I've been very, very lucky to be able to

work with them."

 

 

Always of fascination to the media for a variety of reasons Cruz, who

never discusses her personal life, admits that both the Spanish and

American media treat her equally. "It's all the same and it's all

periods of time, in that for now for a one month period you're here,

now you're going to be that for four months. It's always people trying

to put you in different boxes, but as long as you don't believe it

yourself, then you're fine. I believe you are the only one that can

stop yourself, and for the same reason you should not believe either

all the positive stuff. You are always the same person trying to learn

and grow - at least that's how I look at my career."

 

 

And Cruz, who was a teenager when she first started acting, says she

remains all too aware of her constant growth and transformation. "I

think every day changes you a little bit and makes you learn something

new. Now maybe from the outside that change can be seen like a silent

thing, but I think we're constantly moving forward, evolving, changing

and learning." read material, be a little bit more picky with what I do

next, try to spend less time on a movie set and more time creating and

developing things. I bought the rights of a book last year and I'm a

very persistent person so I feel like I can put a lot of my energy into

that and not spend the whole year on a movie set, maybe shoot a little

less and use more of my time for other things."

Não sou fã do Almodóvar, mas devo admitir que essa nova tragicomédia é, de fato, ótima. Excelente elenco, com um roteiro apuradíssimo. Me entreteu e gostei bastante. Recomendo.

Sou suspeito pra falar do Almodóvar. Ainda assim, posso dizer que vi um dos melhores filmes desse ano até agora.

 

Volver é muito engraçado, muito bonito e muito triste. Acolhedor talvez seja a palavra mais exata para defini-lo. Almodóvar volta às mulheres e aqui expressa todo o seu amor por elas, sem endeusá-las em nenhum momento. O filme é construído apenas em torno de personagens femininos, todos eles fortes mas ao mesmo tempo imperfeitos, às vezes cruéis e com seus esqueletos no armário.

 

Esse concepção de personagens completos, redondos, cujas condutas são congruentes no transcorrer de toda a projeção já vem desde A Lei do Desejo e melhora a cada filme que se segue. Almodóvar sabe que programações mentais e emocionais de uma vida inteira não se desfazem de uma hora para outra e essa grande verdade se sobressai no filme, especialmente em Raimunda, cuja transcendência nós temos apenas um vislumbre, e já ao final do filme. Sua jornada está apenas começando.

 

Fotografia muito linda, com um equilíbrio de cores - branca e preta, inclusive - que mostra ainda mais maturidade do diretor. A seqüência em que a câmera passeia pelos vários vermelhos das camisas dos músicos até chegar a Raimunda é de uma plasticidade incrível. Muitos planos, especialmente na casa da Tia Paula, são tão bonitos quanto discretos - como a abertura no cemitério e a cena em que Sole vai ao velório repleto de carpideiras, filmada do alto -, pedindo uma segunda visita ao filme. A trilha do Alberto Iglesias, que nunca vi fazer nada ruim, também contribui muito.

 

Carmem Maura, Penélope Cruz, Lola Dueñas, todas impecáveis sob a batuta do Almodóvar. Mas foi Blanca Portillo quem me partiu o coração mesmo. Os olhares, a linguagem corporal e o tom de sua voz são comoventes.

 

Pode não ser o melhor Almodóvar. Provavelmente não é mesmo, mas vida e morte, real e surreal se misturam tão bem aqui que tornam Volver um filme muito bonito, vitorioso em todos os sentidos.

Não adianta, não gosto do Almodóvar...ainda acho Carne Trêmula seu melhor trabalho e depois desse, ficou ainda mais chato, mas até q não achei Volver tão ruim, só achei q demora muito pra chegar onde muita gente já deve ter "matado" a huistória c/ meia hora (não eu...rs).

 

O roteiro achei muito fraco e superficial, mas a direção do Almodóvar é realmente consistente e o elenco é fantástico. Nunca gostei da Penélope Cruz, nem nunca achei ela bonita, mas neste filme ela está linda, gostosa e ótima...deve ser indicada para o Oscar e se não tomarem cuidado, ela leva (como eu havia dito a alguns meses).

 

Não sabia q a Carmen Maura estava tão velha, coitada, mas indicá-la a coadjuvante acho um pouco demais, só se for por respeito mesmo...a Blanca Portillo está bem melhor q ela.

 

No geral, até q me agradou, mas esperava bem mais, principalmente no fim, q termina do nada.

Volver - 4 estrelas

 

Apesar de não considerá-lo a obra prima que todos estão dizendo, gostei bastante. Realmente, alguns aspectos da história já eram previsíveis, mas o filme foi desenvolvido de forma inteligente e bastante divertida. Minha atuação favorita foi da atriz que interpreta a irmã de Raimunda. Na minha opinião, está bem melhor do que Penelope Cruz, que está numa atuação bem natural, ao contrário de suas atuações fracas no cinema norte-americano, com excessão de Vannila Sky, onde está razoável. É a melhor atuação dela? Sei lá. Quero antes ver Abre Los Ojos, a versão original de Vannila Sky para poder comparar sua atuação com outra de suas atuações espanholas sem ser sobre a batuta de Almodóvar. Carmen Maura tb está ótima, mas não vejo nada brilhante na atuação dela. E a atriz que faz a amiga que está morrendo de câncer tb está ótima. Diria que é a segunda melhor atuação do filme.

 

Realmente, o ponto onde o filme se encerra é estranho e alguns pontos podiam ser melhor trabalhasdos, mas no geral é um filme interessante que vale a pena uma assistida. Me deixou com vontade de rever, o que farei quando passar na TV. Minha nota pro filme deve aumentar então.

 

Ah, antes que alguém diga que eu sempre digo que "minha nota vai aumentar na segunda vez"... bem, é verdade. Para mim, todo filme bom e inteligente melhora na segunda vez que assistido, pois podemos nos centrar mais nos detalhes, ficar menos atentos nas legendas, ver a fotografia, escutar o som, prestar mais atenção nas atuações, etc. Fora que se vc gostou dos personagens, reencontra-los esperando por você e rever seus conflitos é sempre algo bastante interessante. Se eu tivesse mais tempo, veria todos os filmes duas vezes. Exceto os que eu odiei logo de cara e não vejo potencial para melhorar na minha opinião. Ah, claro, e existem aqueles filmes que tem tanta coisa ocorrendo que vc acaba PRECISANDO ver duas vezes para assimilar parte da história que vc não havia entendido na primeira vez. Magnólia parece ser um caso destes.

Esse é o primeiro do Almodóvar que eu vejo centrado no universo almdovariano, pelo que me disseram (o outro que eu vi foi Má Educação). Me arrisco em dizer que a atuação de Cruz é a atuação do ano. Pelo menos é a mais viva. Está realmente fantástica. Aliás, ele dá uns closes nos peitos dela que são maravilhosos . E ela está apaixonante. Fiquei até com vontade de hablar español. Eu também percebi isso, de criar um universo totalmente particular das mulheres, todas parecem se conhecer e saber de tudo (ou quase, pq no caso, as fofocas não contam). Totalmente paralelo, a ponto de aprofundar a perspectiva de não saber pq elas ficam tanto tempo no banheiro . O prêmio de melhor atriz em Cannes pro elenco feminino inteiro foi justo, pq todas estão ótimas. E Almodóvar traz um roteiro e uma condução muito boa. É um melodrama, mas se assume como isso, não subestima a inteligência. Aliás, fiquei pensando que se todas as novelas fossem assim, talvez elas fossem assistíveis. E fala de um tema muito interessante, o retorno (e a música Volver é excelente). E ele tira riso da morte, do conceito de morte, bem colorido (com uma fotografia que sabe o resultado pra tirar disso), quase brega, mas com paixão. Ele brinca com as superstições, e tira um bom resultado, calcado todo nos personagens, nas relações. Aliás, o filme tem uns momentos hilários (acentuados pela trilha engraçadinha, mas muito boa) (spoiler leve: como quando a cabeça da mãe aparece por debaixo da cama ).

Que interessante...pelo visto o prêmio de atriz para o elenco todo foi realmente justo, já q muitas pessoas gostaram de várias atuações do filme.

 

Apesar da quase unanimidade da Penelope, eu gostei da maconheira, um pessoal gostou da Carmen, outros gostaram da irmã da Cruz...ninguém falou da menina ainda.
