An alarming prospect, and all the more so because there has been a recent decline in the honeybee population. Perhaps it is comforting to know that Einstein never said any such thing -- less comforting, of course, for the bees. The quotation appears on a blackboard near the beginning of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening," a movie that I find oddly touching. It is no doubt too thoughtful for the summer action season, but I appreciate the quietly realistic way Shyamalan finds to tell a story about the possible death of man.

One day in Central Park, people start to lose their trains of thought. They begin walking backward. They start killing themselves. This behavior spreads through Manhattan, and then all of the Northeast. Construction workers throw themselves from scaffolds. Policeman shoot themselves. The deaths are blamed on a "terrorist attack," but in fact no one has the slightest clue, and New York City is evacuated.

We meet Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg), a high school science teacher; the quote was on his blackboard. We meet his wife, Alma (Zooey Deschanel); his friend, Julian (John Leguizamo), and Julian's daughter, Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez). They find themselves fleeing on a train to Harrisburg, Pa., although people learn from their cell phones that the plague, or whatever it is, may have jumped ahead of them.

Now consider how Shyamalan shows the exodus fromManhattan. He avoids all the conventional scenes of riots in Grand Central Station, people killing one another for seats on the train, etc., and shows the population as quiet and apprehensive. If you don't know what you're fleeing, how would you behave? Like this, I suspect.

Julian entrusts his daughter to Elliot and Alma, and goes in search of his wife. The train stops -- permanently -- at a town. The three hitch a ride in a stranger's car, and later meet others who are fleeing, from what or to what, they do not know. Elliot meets a man who talks about a way plants have of creating hormones to kill their enemies, and he develops a half-baked theory that man may have finally delivered too many insults to the grasses and the shrubs, the flowers and the trees, and their revenge is in the wind.

By now the three are trekking cross-country through Pennsylvania, joined by two young boys, who they will eventually lose. They walk on, the wind moaning ominously behind them, and come to the isolated country home of Mrs. Jones (Betty Buckley), a very odd old lady. Here they eat and spend the night and other events take place, and Elliot and Alma find an opportunity to discuss their love and reveal some secrets and speculate about what dread manifestation has overtaken the world.

Too uneventful for you? Not enough action? For me, Shyamalan's approach is more effective than smash-and-grab plot-mongering. His use of the landscape is disturbingly effective. The performances by Wahlberg and Deschanel bring a quiet dignity to their characters. The strangeness of starting a day in New York and ending it by hiking across a country field is underlined. Most of the other people we meet, not all, are muted and introspective. Had they been half-expecting some such "event" as this?

I know I have. For some time the thought has been gathering at the back of my mind that we are in the final act. We have finally insulted the planet so much that it can no longer sustain us. It is exhausted. It never occurred to me that vegetation might exterminate us. In fact, the form of the planet's revenge remains undefined in my thoughts, although I have read of rising sea levels and the ends of species.

What I admire about "The Happening" is that its pace and substance allowed me to examine such thoughts, and to ask how I might respond to a wake-up call from nature. Shyamalan allows his characters space and time as they look within themselves. Those they meet on the way are such as they might indeed plausibly meet. Even the TV and radio news is done correctly, as convenient cliches about terrorism give way to bewilderment and apprehension.

I suspect I'll be in the minority in praising this film. It will be described as empty, uneventful, meandering. But for some, it will weave a spell. It is a parable, yes, but it is also simply the story of these people and how their lives and existence have suddenly become problematic. We depend on such a superstructure to maintain us that one or two alterations could leave us stranded and wandering through a field, if we are that lucky.

Agora, pode não concordar com o Ebert, mas que ele é um crítico de gabarito e respeitado isso é. O é o que me deixa mais curioso quanto ao filme.

Eu acho Shyamalan um grande cineasta. Que cineasta de 5 filmes consegue ter 3 excepcionais em sua filmografia? Tem diretor que passa a vida inteira sem fazer 3 filmes na qualidade de O Sexto Sentido, Sinais e A Vila. Fora que Corpo Fechado, apesar de eu não adorar, tem lá suas qualidades.

 

De ruim só A Dama na Água.

Não acho que ele é um GRANDE cineastra. Acho que ele tem MUITA personalidade e isso faz com que eu sinta uma incrível atração pelos filmes dele. Porque você sabe que vai ver algo diferente... Mesmo que seja um diferente ruim' date=' como A Dama na Água.

Agora é uma pena... 6º Sentido, Sinais, Corpo Fechado e A Vila são ótimos. Estou esperando o próximo ótimo dele. rs Por enquanto eu fico me contentando com as bombas cults. rs

Eu realmente acho. "Sinais" é irretocável, 10/10 (Assim como "Corpo Fechado" e "O Sexto Sentido"). Já "A Vila" é só ok, nota 7/10. "A Dama Na Água" eu preciso rever, mas na época, dei 6/10, acho, é o piorzinho, o mais alegórico, onde aquilo que hj me incomoda em "A Vila" (não me incomodava antes) é elevado à 10ª potencia: Um certo tom prepotente demais, por parte da direção. Espero que em "Fim dos Tempos" ele volte à excelente forma que apresentava, até "Sinais".

 Olhe como são as coisas: parei de ir ao cinema conferir as obras de Shyamalan justamente depois de ter visto "Sinais" ().

  (Vi "A Vila" em DVD - bom filme e só.  Não tive coragem de conferir "A Dama" nem na Sky...).

Shyamalan e tão descendo o cacate no Fim dos Tempos que eu acredito ser o seu filme mais direto e sem finais surpresas, ou seja o seu mais comercial desde do Sexto Sentido já que se trata de um conto de horror, com uma boa data uma sexta-feira 13 e vou assitir o filme de qualquer forma e ter minha opinião própria se bem que desde o principio achei irregular Walhberg como protagonista num papel requer um tom dramatico mas já Zooey eu amei.Bem o negócio e ir assitrir mesmo e torcer para isto não influenciar nas bilheteria já que tem um oponete de peso que está sendo bem aceito pelos os críticos HULK

 Que absurdo!!  Shyamalan é incapaz de fazer um filme ruim!!! Os críticos (e o "público médio" tbm, haja vista a pífia bilheteria dos últimos filmes...) é que são uma cambada de energúmenos e injustos!!!

Tambem espero que o filme seja bom,mas discordo da frase do amigo,acho que eventualmente todo diretor de cinema acaba fazendo um filme ou dois ruins,por melhor que seja,se isso ja aconteceu com Chaplin,Kubrick,Coppola,Spielberg e tantos outros,porque Shyamalan não pode?

Iêi, Deadman... aí eu já acho muito paia sua visão de cinema. Quer dizer que seus olhos não podem ver a um filme mais ou menos? "Ow, não, o filme não é tão bom para o meu padrão... meu olhos, meus olhos... aaaaaaaaaaargh"

 

O Shy faz cinema pra divertir e entreter... se conseguiu me divertir e me entreter então, pra mim, ele é um filme é bom. Simples assim.

 

Não vou assistir a todos os filmes esperando que eles sejam o melhor filme de todos. Não quero nem ser uma frustrada recalcada.

 

E sim, eu gosto de cinema porque, tal qual toda arte, filmes podes dizer o que quiserem, e cada um pode dizer o que quiser sobre eles e ninguém tem nada a vê com isso.

 

E eu acredito sim que, um cinema ruim com personalidade é melhor de se ver que um ruim igual a todos os outros ruins. É como aquele quadro que eu não gosto, mas é diferente dos outros, então tem seus méritos e eu respeito.

 

Enxak, A Dama na Água é o mais fraquinho mesmo. Mas ainda assim, considerando que a história é um conto de fadas que o cara inventou pra filha dele, eu achei fofo.  Só não é um filme muito bom, nem a história tem muito pé nem cabeça... Mas é fofinha. Conta essa história pro teu filhote dormir. rs

 

Teve alguém aí que falou que os filmes do Shy parecem um pouco com "Além da Imaginação" ou "Night Visions" essas coisas... rs Ele tem um caráter um pouco pra esse lado mesmo. Eu acho bacana. Acho que ele é um bom contador de histórias.

Concordo com a Veras, em tudo que ela disse aí sobre o lance de ser uma arapuca isso de esperar sempre por obras primas. Cinema antes de mais nada, até mesmo antes de ser arte, é entretenimento e acabou, isso ninguém pode negar, e se negar, estará errado [dentões] . Não espero revoluções filosóficas e comportamentais ou indagações sobre a existencia humana e a finitude cósmica (citando o Sopa ) nos filmes. E isso tudo porque ninguém assistiu ao filme ainda, hein? 

Bom, eu tenho curiosidade sobre os filmes de Shyamalan, mas ele continua abaixo da média pra mim, dos 5 que vi só gosto de 2. Não sou, entretanto, muito preconceituoso e vou assistir a The Happening tranquilamente para me divertir (se assim o fosse, jamais teria assistido a "O Sonho de Cassandra", que adoro - aliás acho trocentas vezes melhor que "Antes que o Diabo...", uma vez que não gosto de quase nada que o Woody Allen fez).

Eles quem ?  ... E eu to ouvindo falar bem mal do filme sim. É bom a gente assistir antes, muito comodo dizer que todos os críticos andam se juntando contra o shymalan... se for apenas pra se divertir, levar a sério, que seja... prefiro ir vem sem pretensões mesmo.

 

Sincera e respeitosamente eu não sigo as críticas do Pablo mas quero ver essa, tomara que de uma reação igual à que ele fez pra "A vila"

Deadhoney, não entendi a surpresa.  Continuo sendo a mesma pessoa que adora filme de arte e odeia besteiróis americanos. Mas negar cinema entretenimento e diversão é negar uma porrada de outros filmes. (bons filmes)
