Members D4rk-Schn31d3r Posted October 12, 2008 Members Report Share Posted October 12, 2008 mais um outro, dessa vez de doubt ... o autor enaltece de sobremaneira as performances da trinca de atores: streep, hoffman e adams, diz q o filme é ótimo, mas q não é perfeito por causa de sua 'um pouco' longa duração de quase 2h! e q a ação demora a acontecer!! here we go again Hey Guys, I’ve never written one of these reviews, but I just got out of a sneak peek of a movie WAY in advance -- that we'll definitely be hearing a lot about in the fall. So I thought you might be interested to hear about tonight’s preview of "Doubt," directed by John Shanley and starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. (I saw it at Sony Lincoln Square in New York.) Shanley wrote and directed the movie based on his play (which won a Pulitzer). I've really been looking forward to it for a while ever since they announced it was going to be a movie, and I didn't expect I'd get a chance to see it this early. I'm so glad I did because it lives up to expectations. “Doubt” is set in 1964 and is the story of a nun (Streep) who accuses a priest (Hoffman) of molesting one of his students. But it is MUCH MUCH more than that. It's also about some big themes like faith, conviction and truth. This is definitely some heady stuff and the movie has got some great performances to pull it off. Meryl Streep is a mean nun on a mission who makes her Miranda in "The Devil Wears Prada” look like a softy. She's at the top of her game and this is another notch on her belt. Hoffman, always fantastic, goes toe to toe with Streep – and their face offs are explosive. Hoffman’s intense, vulnerable and sinister all at the same time. One minute you think he’s guilty, then innocent the next (no spoilers here!). This role was made for him. And the beautiful Amy Adams, who's generally known for her cute, quirky characters, shows she has got some real chops (She plays the nun in the middle of this moral tug of war). She plays her character with a real sense of inner strength amidst all of these battles. Adams is one of the many pleasant surprises of this movie. The movie isn't perfect though. It's pretty long at almost 2 hours and takes a while to get the action going. But even when my mind started to drift, it was hard to pull my eyes away because of these great performances. And also Roger Deakins' beautiful cinematography (he got robbed at this year's Oscars!). But I'm sure we'll be seeing him and the rest of this movie come awards time. (novidade? ), ... ficou maravilhado com o filme e espera ansiosamente a versão final First echoes of "Doubt" test screening There was a free test sreening of "Doubt" in Manhattan two days ago. It's obviously not the final cut but the Miramax people are strongly considering the movie as their main 2009 Oscar contender so they're doing everything in their power to set things right before releasing it on December 5, 2008. Charlie commented upon on a message board: "I was waltzing down Broadway the other day when one of those annoying people who stand in front of movie theaters and offer free tickets said the 3 magic words...Meryl Streep...Doubt. So of course I signed up." He adds: "Lets just get this out of the way now..Meryl is stunning. You literally can't take your eyes off of her. She doesn't have an Irish accent instead she has a Bronx accent. And of course its spot on. Philip Seymour Hoffman was fine. But Meryl Acts circles around him. Amy Adams was fantastic. The story remains intact, and all in all it was fabulous (although the A/C was busted so it was hot as hell, but the movie was so good I hardly noticed) I can't wait to see the final cut."Do you think Amy could be a potential contender for next year's "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar? So I saw this actually several weeks ago and just failed to write anything about it. Not that it was extremely forgettable (like many would think, or some might even be hoping for). I just didn't have the time.We got the standard "This is a Test Screening" speech... things might change, sound, color correction blah blah blah, but what worries me most is that the print seemed very complete. Sound (save for a few very loud planes at the beginning) was fully mixed and as someone who's done color correction before i didn't see a single shot that would 'need' it. But let's talk about the actual film. It works somewhat and I found myself caring about the assassination on Hitler a lot more in the second half than I did in the first. The first half is sort of just a struggle to discover who is who and why you should care. There's a bunch of lines like "You're a politician running a military operation" and big emotional departures from characters who I just felt indifferent, or worse, confused about. Shifting gears for a moment, there really is no actor like Tom Cruise. And I know a lot of people would disagree, but I've always felt that no one can carry a film like he does. That being said, and this goes to what may be the major fault of the film, his casting as Claus von Stauffenberg is a pretty awful choice. As is casting an assortment of British actors to play German officers. Really, I've never been one to complain about accents and wigs and all that stuff that 'bad' film critics pay attention to, but if this is a story about how not every German was goose-stepping right along side Hitler and that some (nearly half as the film would suggest) were willing to stand up for what was morally right, then why do they all have to be played by Brits? And of coarse almost every 'evil' german is played by a german! Including Hitler himself, who just comes off like a cartoonish vulture. Seriously, I know Hitler was supposed to be crazy and mean, but for this particularly story I would've been more frightened of him had he been given a natural ability to inspire and an eerie warmth. All qualities that the real Hitler must've had. Something akin to what Forest Whitaker was in The Last King of Scotland. Don't get me wrong. None of them turn in bad performances. They're all great actors and they do the best they can with a script that for the first half feels very stilted and WWII 1940's.The ability of these actors is unquestionable as is that of Bryan Singer's abilities as a director. But I wonder why Singer would go with a script that feels at times half-baked. I also suspect him of making decisions based more so on commercial viability as opposed to personal expression. For all the innuendos of X-men and the absolute gayness of Superman Returns, why is it that we never see Bryan Singer in a Bryan Singer film? I feel like I've been overly negative, but the film does work. Just only intermittently. I was thoroughly engrossed in the second half and the closer Cruise and Pals get to actually succeeding, I found myself subconsciously wondering, "Did they actually kill Hitler and I just never heard about it?" To me this is the goal of any film like this. This is where films like Titanic or even Passion of the Christ succeeded. They make you believe that what you know is true may not be, just because you don't want it to be sooo badly. (Van Sant... i hope you've thought about this)So truthfully United Artists may have a good film on their hands. Not a great one, but one that with some trimming and shifting around could reach it's modest ambitions. It's not just a matter of cutting, but one of establishing a vested interested in the characters early on. They should get rid of those awful title cards that kept appearing throughout the film telling the audience the name and rank of every character. As if it matters who that guy that Cruise and Nighy talk to for one scene is. This isn't the history channel.As far as oscars go (since that's what this website is about), I personally think Tom Wilkinson (in an all too brief role) could get a vet nomination. Like the rest of the cast, he's a brit playing a german, but he actually manages to be less distracting and connects to his character more so than anyone else. There's a shot of him waving away to one of Cruise's cohorts that's pure 1930's mustache twirling villainy, but I loved it. Personally, I think they could've written out Hitler entirely and just had Wilkinson's character stand in for everything Hitler was.Techs could show up, as this is a very BIG film. Sound is a definite possibility. I didn't care for the art direction. Certain sets just looked so unbelievably large and fake, but still, they certainly built a lot of stuff there.So, this being a test screening and they're being a possibility of them making changes (although they probably won't) I'll give this a tentative rating of...2-3 out of 4 stars Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Uma crítica melhor que a outra vem saindo, fora o alvoroço em torno de Sally Hawkins. O Nathaniel está atualizando suas previsões e mais uma vez, delira... a categoria de direção é provavelmente a mais absurda de todos os previsores... Members thalesgn Posted October 12, 2008 Members Report Share Posted October 12, 2008 Na corrida pra vaga "indie", Slumdog Millionaire levou a melhor por causa da recepção em Toronto (e toda a história da venda do filme pra Fox Searchlight, esse viés econômico ajuda), Happy Go Lucky ressurgiu gora com as críticas positivas, mas se eles focassem a campanha na Hawkins conseguindo uma vaga numa categoria apertada é mais lucro. E como vai ser esplêndido vê-lo no palco. E vou além: Rachel Getting Married e Slumdog Millionaire acabam de ganhar um forte rival para a vaga indie do ano. Uma das atrizes do meu curta me sugeriu de ver o making of do filme, que tinha umas coisas que se assemelhavam. Eu coloquei o DVD e vi tantas vezes o trailer do filme do Leigh, que já gosto antes mesmo de ver. Parece ser maravilhoso mesmo. Estou para ver aquele All Or Nothing, dele também. Alguém aqui já viu? Ela leu no Variety. ) ... Thico, tenho o dvd de AGORA OU NUNCA. Timothy Spall (sempre relegado a papéis coadjs e cliches) e Lesley Manville dão show. E por show entenda: Um tremendo show, no modo Leigh de dar show. O roteiro aqui é outro triunfo, abordando criaturas peculiares e focando mais em seus próprios universos e na forma como o universo exterior age sobre elas. Eu senti ressonâncias de Cassavetes. Não tem a voltagem de SEGREDOS E MENTIRAS, mas é um ótimo filme. Nunca vou entender como GANGUES DE NY e CASAMENTO GREGO tiveram seus roteiros indicados em detrimento de ALL OR NOTHING. Nunca! Após uma hora e meia na chuva, com três amigos igualmente ensopados, entramos, enfim, no teatro que abrigava a exibição - um belíssimo edifício, com capacidade para abrigar mais de mil pessoas, uma espécie de Theatro Municipal onde geralmente ocorrem peças de teatro, óperas, etc. Sobre o filme, que é o que interessa: é bom, mas só. Imaginem a seguinte mistura: o ritmo de Corra Lola Corra, mais a desvairice de um Amélie Poulain, adicionado à violência urbana 'terceiro-mundista' de um Cidade de Deus, agora tudo isso com um toque indiano. Este é o filme do Danny Boyle. Depois da sessão, houve aplausos por 1 minuto. Virei para um conhecido senhor, que voluntariou comigo em um cinema (Varsity) do festival: 'É isso que ganhou o TIFF?'. Ele respondeu: 'É...'. A agilíssima edição entrelaça muitíssimo bem três diferentes tempos narrativos; a fotografia é belíssima; o elenco mirim, maravilhoso. Agora, quando a história passa para uma outra 'faixa etária', as coisas desandam um pouco. A sinopse do filme, sem spoilers: um sujeito pára numa espécie de O Jogo do Milhão, no qual tem de responder a perguntas e a respostas de um apresentador à la Silvio Santos. O bacana do roteiro é que cada pergunta marca um momento da vida deste personagem - ou seja, nós vamos acompanhando a vida do protagonista desde a sua infância pobre e tumultuada na Índia até o dia em que ele parou ali, tudo isso pontuado pelas perguntas do programa, que remetem a momentos da vida dele. Pronto, não entreguei nada, juro! O filme começa muitíssimo bem, com um elenco mirim afiadíssimo e encantador, mas à medida que a trama se deselança e anda no tempo, com novos atores, as coisas desandam um pouco, a meu ver. Slumdog Millionaire é colorido, vibrante, ágil, mas conquista mais pelos truques artísticos do que pelos méritos propriamente ditos. Em momento nenhum, por exemplo, a história me tocou, ainda que eu me importasse com aqueles personagens. A cada dia, acho que gosto menos do filme - e, dos sete filmes que eu vi durante o festival, preferi Leonera, do Pablo Tapero e um francês tocante, Seraphine. No entanto, é bem capaz da Fox Searchlight, que vai distribuir Slumdog Millionaire, emplacar um terceiro filme consecutivo no Oscar. Members D4rk-Schn31d3r Posted October 12, 2008 Members Report Share Posted October 12, 2008 contra-senso do rogers de colocar aronofsky em direção e seu respectivo filme 'the wrestler' numa décima posição! qt a benjamin button, creio q fincher mais uma vez criou uma obra-prima p/ colocar numa galeria repleta delas, o problema é q dessa vez ela tem 3h de duração, e como já estão pedindo pra retalhar seu objeto de desejo p/ entregar um filme mais enxuto (o q seria do agrado da grande maioria), ele deve estar desesperado na sala de edição não sabendo onde passar a tesoura. fincher, uma sugestão: deixa o filme como vc acha q deve deixar e manda a academia para a ... vc sempre fez isso, pq se importaria agora? ah, jesse james manda lembranças happy-go-lucky é um filme despretensioso, apenas, ok hawkins manda bem no papel de uma 'hippie' porra loka, mas pelo-amor, colocar esse filme como o indie do ano e na frente de RGM seria uma total involução por parte dos críticos e principalmente da academia (numa possível indicação) q tem melhorado suas escolhas a cada ano indicando e premiando filmes do porte de TWBB e NCFOM, respectivamente sobre slumdog millionaire é aquilo q já falei antes, pode estar sendo muito elogiado, ganhou uma premiação importante e tal, mas 1 filme q não tem cast conhecido, concorrendo com vários outros gigantes da indústria, se little miss sunshine e juno q tem o elenco q tem, tiveram q suar frio pra conseguir uma vaga, vcs acham q um filme com elenco indiano vai ter tantas chances assim? cada vez mais eu acho q não, e praticamente o mesmo pode-se dizer em relação a H-G-L, quem era hawkins até hj? quem faz parte do elenco? os únicos pontos a favor: 1- leigh 2- filme de lingua inglesa Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
